Altidore delivers double in AZ season opener

This summer Jozy Altidore said that his goal for the upcoming club season was to improve on his 22-goal campaign of last season. That seemed like an ambitious goal at the time, but based on how his new season has begun, it may be more realistic than we thought.

The U.S. National Team striker scored a pair of quality goals just two minutes apart in AZ Alkmaar's season-opening 2-2 draw vs. Ajax Amsterdam on Sunday. The goals, which came early in the second half, helped AZ erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and has Altidore looking like he's going to score even more goals for AZ this season.

Here are Altidore's goals:

  1. gabe says:

both really good goals. excellent pace. fantastic strength. did well not to go down easily on the challenge. clinical finishing.

the question, as always, with jozy is consistency. if he can do this regularly for club and county, this formation would be ideal:

    Donovan – Altidore – Dempsey

    Bradley – Jones – Torres

    Johnson – Cameron – Bocanegra – Cherundolo

  2. UnionFan says:

Still amazed at the hate this kid gets.
While Shea crashes and burns, Altidore looks to grow on his great first season. Who knows, another 15+ goal season and does he move on to a bigger league?

  3. monty says:

Its hard to believe he still has so many haters. He just keeps getting better and better. Can’t wait to see how this season unfolds.

  4. Benjamin C. says:

    Nice finishing, Jozy.

  5. monty says:

I like that lineup gabe. I’d just switch Dempsey and Donovan because we all know what Dempsey can do when he cuts in on his right and Donovan is more affective at whipping in crosses.

  6. gabe says:

How old is he? He shouldn’t even be in his prime yet. Excellent direction he is headed.

  7. Dinho says:

WOW! Both well taken goals. Hope he maintains his fitness level because this could be a GREAT year for him. Well done, Jozy. Keep it up!

  8. Citronomics says:

Both goals well placed. Especially liked Jozy’s first holding off the defender and finishing with a nifty and calmly weighted top drawer shot.

Great start. Keep it going Jozy!

  9. John.q says:

Wait, according to the SBI comment section Jozy is terrible and should never be called to the nats again? Wtf?

  10. mcbabz says:

great goals on both…strength, speed, touch & clinical finishes….what’s to hate?!?!

  11. Dw says:

Jozy has strength! Impressive showing against a very good Ajax team

  12. Bowie Boy says:

    Beast mode!

    Love that kid.

  13. Primoone says:

It is just soo unbelievably stupid and extremely sooo unfair that josy…blah blah blah…give it a rest already and say something profound…

  14. Jidax says:

Jozy is our top striker hands down, we should just be happy and praise the kid!! Two fantastic goals.. It’s of his goad are skilled, not a poacher who GED lucky once in a while and find the ball at his feet !!! Beast mode!!!

  15. M says:

If you ever wondered what it would be like if Reggie Bush played soccer? Speed, Strength and Skill..lol at #2 bouncing off Jozy as he attacked the goal.

No diving just taking matters into his own hands and finishing the play

  16. Dinho says:

    Gotta love autocorrect.

  17. bryan says:

sick goals, well done! glad he stepped it up in the 2nd half.

  18. bryan says:

also, villarreal is probably wish they held onto him. they could use him in the segunda. so glad jozy made this move!

  19. Jidax says:

    Yeah brio!! iPhone man!! Lol

  20. Shawn says:

Yep, Jozy’s too lazy. His touch is poor. He just doesn’t play striker well. Blah, blah, blah.

A striker’s job is to score goals. Jozy does. That’s all that matters. Great strikes, and for the record, that backflip on the 2nd was a quality bit of skill as well.

  21. MemRook says:

These goals make me smile for one main reason: it appears that Jozy has largely eliminated going down too easily under pressure from his game. I watched the entire match and except for a couple falls you could see the effort he made to stay on his fight and battle for possession. I was getting so effing tired of watching one of our strongest players flop like a fish at the slightest hint of contact. This is verrrrrry good news for US (and AZ) fans if he keeps that up. *smile*

  22. Dinho says:

I bet AZ doesn’t release Jozy for the Mexico match. What a shame. Would love to see him punish some of their backline.

  23. MemRook says:

“you could see the effort he made tostay on his *feet* and battle”

  24. Jamie Z. says:

“A noble man compares and estimates himself by an idea which is higher than himself; and a mean man, by one lower than himself. The one produces aspiration; the other ambition, which is the way in which a vulgar man aspires.”

But then this is a soccer website, isn’t it? Where people talk about soccer? For fun? And personal enjoyment? Yeah…so go, Jozy. Keep proving people wrong.

  25. Jamie Z. says:

I am also glad to see Jozy playing well. I hope everything goes well with your GED.

  26. Tony in Quakeland says:

I’m calling for 30, all competitions, this year… 28 to go

  27. seth says:

    jozy’s killin it again

  28. jeff says:

Don’t think so. The goal is to develop and grow, at least over the next 2-3 seasons. He can do that at AZ and then transfer somewhere bigger when he’s a more polished player.

  29. GTV says:

Sequence on the second gol was awesome. Both were excellent quality gols.

  30. Michael Stypulkoski says:

    Mark it down!

  31. ryan says:

Better than the goal, look at that back heel to set up the second goal. That’s the little things that big league coaches will want to see from him, they type of stuff that doesnt exactly show up in the stat sheet. Making Van Der Wiel look like a fool.

  32. 2tone says:

I say he scores 5 more than he did last season in the eredivise; to bring it to 20 goals in teh Erdeviaie this se3ason, and scores 27 goals in all competitions.

Pure class on the second goal, and pure strength and poise on the first goal. Safe to say Jozy is becoming the striker we all thought he could become. I really hope he is called up for the Mexico friendly. AZ released Adam Maher for Hollands game; I don’t see why they won’t let Jozy go for the Mexico friendly.

  33. Judging Amy says:

man, those were fantastic goals. two goals like that in one game against a major opponent like ajax is nothing to sneeze at. with t. boyd coming along nicely the us could have a deadly, young, strong striker core. with kool herc continuing to score at a ridiculous rate, that should push our young guys to keep working hard. nats future starting to look much brighter at forward. if everything goes according to plan boyd and altidore should cause a lot of problems for defenses in 2014.

  34. jlm says:

yeah, but he is lazy. he just does not have the heart.

give me a freaking break. anybody who has ever said one of those two statements should slap his self in the face right now.

  35. Judging Amy says:

That was wonderful. The incredible strength to hold off the defender on the first goal was wonderful (I knew Jozy was strong but the guy’s sprinting at him pretty hard and just bounces off!) The finish after he received the wall pass off the back heel was wonderful. The move to get into the box on the first goal was wonderful…What a performance!

  36. jlm says:

they shouldn’t release him. NO reason for him to make that trip right now

  37. Mike in Missouri says:

It’s immaterial. They both have quite a bit of freedom to go whereever and end up switching half the time anyway.

  38. TomM says:

Why is there a lineup any time a US Nat scores a goal?

  39. Madaoua05 says:

Van der Wiel is supposed to be a transfer target for many of the top clubs in Europe. And Jozy made him look like a Wimpy McWimperson, as he bounced off of him like Spud Webb trying to guard Shaq. That was quality.

  40. blokhin says:

    Et tu, Jozy?

  41. seth says:

they better make his stats better in FIFA13

  42. away goals says:

Pretty sure it’s a fifa date. They’d have to claim he was injured to prevent him from playing.

Of course JK could elect not to call him up.

  43. wiseguy says:

haha seriously. I don’t get it

  44. Broseph says:

He didn’t just hold off the defender in the first one, the guy was running at him at full speed and Jozy just gave him a little shoulder and the guy went down.

  45. ben says:

I agree, let him really settle in at AZ and try and improve consistently over the next 2 or 3 years. He’s only 22, theres no rush.

  46. Vic El Paso texas says:

The first goal the defender did bad defending but Altidore manage to follow through and SCORED.
The second goal Altidore had a lucky touch and his teammate was there but again Altidore managed to follow through and SCORED.
he needs to prove the haters by simply following every play like he did with those 2 goals, and become an elite forward.
By the way i don’t think Mexico is better than Usa, the difference is the pride and the attitude of a soccer player. If Usa does not want to take advantage of learning from Mexico, that will be sad.

  47. Jeremy says:

Eh. We had our decade. Barring a 2+ goal win on Wed, Mexico is the better team. Our best hope is that they get another terrible coach because their roster is getting stacked by CONCACAF standards.

  48. M says:

The obsession with Mexico is really nonsense. We only should be concerned with ourselves and step back and look more subjectively on what is really going on.

We have youth players at Liverpool, Barcelona, Fulham and with the Bocca Juniors. We have 2 unbelievable backs in Johnson and Chandler, ( yes handler will be playing for the USA) Bradley is at Roma, Jozy is making a name for himself, Lletget will probably make the first team at WH this year. Boyd, Brooks, Packwood etc.. A lot of things to be excited about.

  49. gabe says:

good point lol it’s something we just do i guess.

  50. 2tone says:

Agreed. Mexico should not be what we are comcerned with. Last time I checked the WC is what matters.

  51. Bob says:

Love to see Herc and Jozy start up top against Mexico! AZ owes us for how long they held him back this summer so they better not try to fight his release!!

  52. Vic El Paso texas says:

We are also stacked with top talent and by the way who has more players in Europe, Mexico or usa. The answer is Usa, Mexico is barely getting noticed due to their playing of the last 3 years and Europe is barely recruiting more Mexican talent. by the way the soccer Olympic tournament for men was very below average , from Spain to the African American teams and Brazil was terrible and great Britain was also terrible. Mexico and Usa could have been the final, only if Usa could have taken it more seriously. Imagine donovan, bocanegra and Howard as enforcements.

  53. Tyler says:

Last I checked there were no African American teams at the Olympics. I know what you mean though.

  54. Amru says:

One of the things I love about those goals are the clever runs he made to make himself available to his teammates. I really think Jozy and Herc up top would be a dangerous combo

  55. Vic El Paso texas says:

Usa usa usa usa i predict a Usa and mexico strong performance in world cup 2014. Typical strong European teams will show up as well but Usa and Mexico will be scary teams. Specially playing in Brazil, Usa and Mexico should not feel homesick like the European teams will.

  58. Nordy says:

Damn, both those goals were sweet.

  59. ThaDeuce says:

    strength!

  60. BigDog says:

You are an embarrassment to the American educational system… or you have a deep understanding of sarcasm.

  61. BBB says:

He barely missed his hat-trick on a nice shot across the face of goal a couple minutes before being subbed out.

Jozy is the bullfrog of the Striker world. Big, strong, doesn’t move much, and, after lulling enemies into a sense of sleep, does some crazy fast move and your lunch is gone.

  62. Good Jeremy says:

    Liberia? South Carolinafrica?

  63. TomG says:

Good point, Mem. In some ways, his time in Spain taught him some bad habits. He’s a powerful man and should use his strength to stay upright, not to draw fouls. He may accumulate some bad calls by the refs that way but he’ll also collect some awesome goals like today.

  64. TomG says:

Love the power to get to the goal and the finesse to chip the keeper on the first. Never seen him chip in that spot before. Add another skill to the arsenal! Love the combo play on the 2d, and love that on both goals, there was only one shot that would yield a goal and Jozy was able to figure out what that shot was and execute it all in a split second – very impressive.

  65. Lorenzo says:

I double agree. How many times do you see players jump and it just doesn’t work out and they just sit and sit and sit. I don’t want our 1 star forward to sit. Yes, I know we have some other players, and people want to forget about Altidore. But let’s face the music guys, Altidore stands alone at the top overall.

  66. Primoone says:

    Thank you, Marcus Aurelius…

If you hadn’t nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up the daisies. It’s rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-parrot.”

    -Monty Python

  67. TrollsWillTroll says:

Yeah he scored a couple of lucky goals, but can he do it against a good team?

  68. Darwin says:

I love to see his teammates celebrate his first goal with the olympic archer and shield.

  69. TomG says:

    What was that about? Explain?

  70. WK says:

Is Jozy lined up on the left in a 4-3-3, or did he just pull wide from a central position on both of those passes? he looked pretty good out there on the wing- went straight to goal on both either alone or on a give-n-go.

we’re gonna need an In Form Jozy to get through qualifying.

  71. Russell says:

holy cow. i just watched these goals.

Great goals both of them. I’m definitely on the ‘buy’ for Jozy. Each of them showed something different and superior to an Ajax defense. He will not be in the Netherlands next year if he has more of this to offer.
