Zak Whitbread will be staying in England after all. Just not in the Premiership.

The free agent American centerback is reportedly set to sign with Championship club Leicester City, ending weeks of speculation as to where his future lied. Whitbread was released by Premiership side Norwich City earlier this summer after another injury-plagued season, and all indications point to him returning the England's second division.

The 28-year-old Whitbread played in the Championship just over a year ago when he helped Norwich City gain promotion into the Premiership. He started in 21 league matches for the Canaries last season, but injuries forced him in and out of the team's lineup and ultimately he was deemed expendable.

Leicester finished in ninth place in the Championship last season.

What do you think of Whitbread being on the verge of signing with Leicester City? Think he will do well there? Believe he can finally stay healthy?

If he could stay healthy then he would certainly make for a nice center back option for the USMNT. But he seems to be another John O’Brien. Great potential but injury plagued.

  2. Jared says:

This just in, Whitbread injured himself signing the contract.

  3. NE Matt says:

Leicester should be a favorite to make the top 6 and compete for the jump to the Prem this coming year. They have good group of players and Whitbread is a nice addition for them.

I still think Bolton dominates the Championship. They really haven’t had an exodus at all and with Coyle staying on board, he’s been able to make a few good signings.

  4. GCS says:

He scores with his Left, He scores with his Right, That boy CD, makes Drogba look…

    (great pic)

  5. TomG says:

Very tough to have a perpetually injured CB. He’s got to be a rock back there, a guy who is relied on, not just for his play but his communication and leadership of the defensive line, so I’m not shocked Norwich gave up on him, but it is disappointing.

  6. Jordan says:

Finally, my Foxes sign an American (first since Keller) and get mentioned on SBI!

Leicester definitely needed to sign a CB, but considering Whitbread’s history of injuries, he’ll most likely be a back-up for Wes Morgan (captain) and Sean St. Ledger.

Nigel Pearson likes his CBs to play a no-nonsense style. The team itself isn’t boring, but the he’d much rather his CBs blast the ball down the field than try to make pretty passes.

When healthy and in form, there’s no question Whitbread could get into the starting 11 but he’s been slowed down a bit. I’m certainly interested to see what kind of shape he’s in now.

  7. b says:

If Holden and the other injured guys are fully recovered, they will dominate.

  8. Felix says:

If it wasn’t for his injuries he’s be up there with our top CBs fighting for starting spot with the Nats.
    Just can’t stay healthy.

  9. Douglas Zimmerman says:

Finally an American on my team!
