MLS transfer window closes today

The summer MLS transfer window has been marked by some serious acquisitions, with Designated Players like Houston's Oscar Boniek Garcia, Vancouver's Barry Robson and Kenny Miller, Montreal's Marco Di Vaio, New England's Jerry Bengtson, Chicago's Sherjill MacDonald and New York's Tim Cahill and big-name, non-DP signing Alessandro Nesta among the new crop of stars joining the league.

With less than 24 hours remaining until the summer transfer window closes, though, Friday marks the last chance MLS teams have to add big-name talent from teams scattered around the world. The closing of the window does not prevent players from being transferred out of MLS, though, as the window only applies to incoming moves. Outward transfers depend on the windows of the other countries around the world.

MLS teams can still sign players ahead of the September 15 roster freeze date just as long as they are no long under contract with teams outside of the country and are free agents. That means a player like U.S. international Ricardo Clark, for example, would be eligible to return to MLS at a later date considering his contract with Eintracht Frankfurt will expire at the end of the month.

Which contenders do you think need to make a move before the transfer deadline? Which teams do you think have helped themselves the most with incoming transfers over the last month?

Accroding to der Speigel and the Kaiserlauten website Christian Tiffert is on his way to Seattle.

  2. Alex says:

Any chance that Rafa will get dumped by RBNY sometime before the window closes? That would be a dream – he is such a cancer.

  3. Nesta? Gotta mention no? :)

  4. SteveE says:

Mayers has retweeted from someone saying he is a DP. When will Flaco go is the question?

  5. JohnC says:

Why is Chicago paying Sherjill MacDonald DP money? Not young or high profile. Has spent most of his time in 2nd division soccer. Why would MLS want a club to splash money on a player like that? Chicago’s signings have been pretty weak the last couple years, they have done really well with the draft, but all foreign players they have brought in have been pretty big busts, minus the one they just let go of.

Why does the MLS transfer window close before others? That could mean missing out on players who are still deciding…

  7. b says:

Maybe within the league like DeGuzman?

  8. Johnny Ramone says:

    Dear God,

    Please send Rafa packing.

Probably because of transfer fee and getting prorate for mid season. So he will only cost $175,000 against the cap no matter what his salary and transfer fees amount to.

  10. Wendell Gee says:

I wonder if it’s possible to restructure things so that one of the current DPs is no longer a DP.

  11. SteveE says:

I hope not for our sake. I was hoping for the loan deal to Columbia so we could maybe bring him back next year on the cheaper.

So Evans is now a LB or left winger. I say maybe throw him to the left side wing (if Flaco is gone) until Zak is back, then decide from there what we want to do. Rose was doing quite well for us, but he has been relegated to first on for Tiffert.

  12. Wendell Gee says:

Or keep in the league and beat on the brat
    beat on the brat
    beat on the brat
    with a baseball bat.

    oh yeah

  14. Vic El Paso texas says:

Poor rafa, but i don’t care. Kaka would come but money money money. I want ronaldinho in seattle, that would be nice. Kaka in dc with new stadium, ballack a rapid. Justbsaying

  15. Johnny Ramone says:

Kaka isn’t going to DC. Take a dep breath.

  16. mike says:

well said John C., Don’t know what their reasoning is. Don’t know if we can make the playoffs or not. All these players going elsewhere and we get a 2nd div player.

  17. Freddies Dead says:

G.John to SEA, NY, or LA

  18. SteveE says:

Thanks Chicago for the $ and spot so we can get Tiffert.
