Liverpool offers comment on Dempsey

As Liverpool prepares for a few matches in North America, the club has made a public comment about its pursuit for one of the continent's top players.

Plenty of reports have swirled about Liverpool's interest in Clint Dempsey, and while manager Brendan Rodgers revealed that the club has looked into acquiring him, he stopped short of saying that an official offer had been made. A Fulham spokesperson told the BBC earlier Wednesday that no official bids have been submitted for Dempsey.

"Clint is a player we've enquired about, it is as simple as that," Rodgers said in a team statement. "Ian Ayre, our managing director, has spoken with the club to see what the position is. That is where we're at. He's a very talented player, but we don't like to talk about other clubs' players."

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if Dempsey stayed at Fulham. Doesn’t seem to be enough concrete interest in him from other clubs.

  2. Dennis says:

Well why would Liverpool say they wanted Dempsey, it would only drive the price up? From LFC’s point of view it is a smart thing to remain casual about it until they have a better understanding of what the real cost might be.

  3. Andrew says:

    This.

  4. Felix says:

I hope he doesn’t go. I know Liverpool is a big club, but its still in transition, and if he truly wants CL football, he’s not going to see it with LFC. That club isn’t good enough to go top 4. Suarez is world class, but other than that Gerard is getting old and injury-prone and their backline is average (outside of Glen Johnson whom I rate highly).
He’s a star at Fulham, just stay there living in a great city like London.

  5. Robert Daniels says:

    He’s staying put. Sorry Deuce…

  6. Todd says:

Word is he is going to PSG!!!

  7. Dimidri says:

Why are all discussions about Dempsey always limited to England or team already in the CL? Seems like no team with a dece chance @ CL soccer in England fits for him, so what?

What about Valencia, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Inter, Dortmund, Schalke, Stuggart, etc? Those are bigger teams (minus maybe Stuggart) than Fulham, and give him great chances to play in the CL without turning off large swaths of the American fan base that despise people who root for Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona, etc. because ‘I walked into the Manchester airport and I saw a Man U jersey, it was love at first sight!”. Dortmund and Schalke actually seem like great fits.

And isn’t there something internally inconsistent between ‘Dempsey is a warrior who is never complacent and never will just ‘accept things’ and ‘Dempsey can’t go to a team that has a great chance at making the CL next year where he could push them over the top but isn’t currently in the CL’? Just like Timmy said, you could go to a team, get knocked out in the playoff round, then never make it the next two years.

  9. elgringorico says:

Demps game is best suited for EPL. His feet ain’t fast enough for La Liga, that’s fosho. (not hatin, i truly love the man)

  10. Ben says:

the tempo of the Premier league is definitely higher than other leagues. whether or not this translate into “best” or “most exciting” is another matter, but the games are often breakneck.

  11. Happy Boy says:

    Liverpool sucks though..

  12. Adam says:

It says right in the piece that they’ve already asked Fulham about Dempsey, so Fulham clearly already know they’re interested. This won’t change the price at all, this was just to clarify the shenanigans that went on with the NESN website earlier today.

  13. THomas says:

    No arguments here.

  14. el jeffe says:

Wasn’t there some talk about him wanting to stay in London? Or at least wanting to keep his family in London? That may have something to do with the Demps and England talk.

    cheers…

  15. NE Matt says:

Malaga is the team I would choose for Deuce. Champions league ball and he’d have great service from midfield with little competition on the attacking front.

  16. Raymon says:

OK, I made a transfer happen. Just ordered a Fulham “Dempsey” jersey. Adding it to my Arsenal “Fabregas” jersey and my Milan “Kaka” jersey collectibles.

  17. Michael F. says:

Why would they announce that? Are they trying to drive up his transfer fee by bidding against themselves?

  18. TomM says:

Hope it works out better than when I ordered my John O’Brien Ajax jersey.

  19. biff says:

This is a great piece on Dempsey from a Brit perspective with, in general, a lot of supportive comments of Dempsey from readers.

And how about Maurice Edu possibly moving to Valencia…

  20. Duneman says:

“How can we get some free press for our current round of games in the US this summer?….Should we try to push forward with more rumors about how one of the greatest players in the US is going to play on our team?? Those Roma guys are getting good buzz with Bradley and Chelsea have that whole “championship” thing to get people excited…lets go with the Dempsey rumor….its either that or do some Bobble Head promotion or something on game night…Americans love those things.”

  21. whoop-whoop says:

Liverpool is a Top Club in transition… which seems to me to be a better option than a mid to low table side that is in perpetual transition. Odds are, 2 years from now, it will be a better place to be than Fulham.

  22. Old School says:

I’ll never understand when people make this statement.

His footwork, ball skills and general flair is fitting of any league.

  23. Hogatroge Abroad says:

Edu to Valencia would be awesome!

  24. PD says:

    forgive the re-post, but:

I find this silence over Dempsey offers baffling and annoying.
Either his agent is terrible or something else is going on.

Hearing that Fulham is shutting down any offers makes sense, but they are not the first club that have tried to hold on to an impact player looking for greener pastures. Players and thier agents find ways around this all the time. Now if there is another factor at work put in place by Deuce (i.e. I don’t want to move my family out of London and want to be able to drive home from work and n London clubs are interested) that’s another story.

I hate being this guy, but I can’t help but wonder if this still is a matter of people undervaluing him because he’s a US player. If any other non-american player had had the season that Dempsey had put in last year in the EPL, there would be about a dozen clubs clamoring for him.

    Baffling.

  25. hudson says:

I think Dempsey overestimated his market value when he talked up wanting to play Champions League football and told Fox teams should put money on the table if they wanted him. If he thought that would touch off a bidding war, he was mistaken. He didn’t seem to gauge how much his age would weigh against him, or his status as a late-bloomer compared to other EPL stars establishing themselves in their early to mid-20s.

He’s a bit of an anomaly in that regard, and it’s left him open to criticism that his 23-goal season was a one-off rather than the result of steady progress over the last five years. Still, it seems strange Liverpool is the only EPL team to show legitimate interest in acquiring Dempsey. I wonder if his bluntness about teams stepping up with offers, or Champions League talk, turned off some clubs.

  26. Rory says:

I just hope it doesn’t happen… I’d hate to have to root against Clint.

  27. Dennis says:

CL clubs are Man U, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal in England. Really do you realistically see any of those clubs going after Dempsey? Newcastle, Tottenham, Liverpool were on the outside looking in. Not sure any of those would have a 80% chance of CL in a year. Any rumors about non-english clubs being interested?

  28. Eric says:

With the potential loss of Van Persie I don’t see how you can just throw Giroud and Podolski out their and expect them to deliever Champion’s League next year. Throw in Tottenham possibly losing Modric and you can see that slots 4-8 in the standings are wide open. Also I dont think that Clint has any real desire to have to relocate his family to another to say Germany where he doesn’t speak the language and doesn’t really have the connections.

  29. brooklyn_jai says:

“Liverpool offers comment”… but no money.

Where did all the sheikhs go now that we need ‘em?
