Who makes your MLS All-Star team?

Lost in the madness of the U.S. men's national team's start of World Cup qualifying, the MLS international break and Euro 2012 is the fact that MLS All-Star voting has begun and is in full swing.

The MLS All-Stars will take on UEFA Champions League and FA Cup winner Chelsea at PPL Park in a little more than a month with an eye on snapping a three-game losing streak after a loss to Everton (in penalties) and two losses to Manchester United.

Fans can vote for the All-Star team in a multitude of ways, ranging from online on the league's website and texting until July 2, to voting via Twitter on Thursday and Friday of this week. Six players were selected from each of the league's 19 teams to make up the ballot. SBI will share our All-Star picks at a later date, but what we want to know from you right now is who makes your starting XI for the MLS All-Star team?

The players selected for the All-Star ballot and the leading vote getters as of the latest tabulation are after the jump:

  1. SN says:

The lack of education about the game gives us leading vote getters like this. Painful.

  2. Mike D says:

Patrick Nyarko got so snubbed from this.

  3. Neil says:

Don’t know how Brek Shea, Jeff Parke or Adu got on here.

  4. Eric says:

The midfield picks are a little ridiculous. Shea hasn’t been on form all year, Adu has only started to show any real flash for Philly and as much as I like Donovan, he hasn’t done anything to help LA this year.

Nyarko has been one of the best flank midfielders all year. Chris Pontius (I assume he’d be listed as a forward?) also deserves a look along with Sebastian Grazzini.

  5. Raul says:

    Agreed. Real bad.

  6. slughog says:

AJ Soares deserves to be here. Any thoughts on the Commissioner’s picks?

  7. Tim F. says:

I don’t know about all the snubs but Dax McCarty should at least be listed.

    Tim

  8. J.M. says:

I would make a claim for Jun Marques Davidson or Gershon Koffie being on Vancouvers list over Chiumiento and Camilo. Both are absolute rocks in the midfield, a big reason why Vancouver has greatly improved its defense and ball possession. Davidson especially is amazingly composed, and rarely makes any errors. Probably wouldn’t make the team, but he’s definitely worthy of consideration.

  9. PWW says:

Big names get big votes. Sair Sene has been NE’s entire offense this year. Chance Myers has been unbelievable and he’s not even on the ballot. Likewise, Grazzini orchestrates Chicago’s entire offense.

  10. Elementdave says:

    Freddy Adu? smh!!

  11. elgringorico says:

Forwards/Midfielders who stand the best chance of competing with Chelsea TODAY:

Forwards: Wondo, Henry, Pontius, Montero, Cooper

Midfield: DeRo, Donovan, Davis, Zusi, Beckerman, Adu, Kitchen

Don’t know enough about defense to choose them ;)

  12. kpugs says:

Before someone tries to murder me, I did NOT expect Ryan Meara to make the squad. I am surprised that he didn’t even make the top 5 though. Seems kind of ridiculous. He’s been almost flawless. Maybe he’s let up 2 goals that were his own fault all season so far.

And while I’m at it, blah blah blah fans reward names and not the quality players. Brek Shea is a joke this year, and while I’m actually going to give Becksycakes some credit for playing well he skips games whenver the hell he wants and isn’t even top 10 in terms of best midfielders. Thanks fans! FREDDY ADU FTW!

  13. James says:

    Sheanon Williams for sure.

  14. louis z says:

sometimes picks are made based on reputation rather than current form.

  15. seattlefutball says:

add Geoff Cameron who’s been terrible in MLS (& underwhelming for the nats too if your honest)

  16. Josh says:

One of the problems with only allowing a certain number per team.

  17. seattlefutball says:

George John has played great this year despite Dallas’ results but if us dummies didnt vote for him last year hes sure not gonna get in this year…shame

  18. Josh says:

It’s really unfortunate having reputation names make the list as opposed to actual form. Especially when each team is limited on number of nominees.
I’m pretty impressed that Collin is leading all defenders. Never expected my SKC boys to get much respect. Collin is well deserving, that back line has been solid this year.

  19. Mike says:

    David Beckham, LAG
    Landon Donovan, LAG
    Brek Shea, FCD
    Fredy Montero, SEA

Uh, what? This is why All-Star games should never be voted on by fans. People will go regardless. This game is meant to reward the players who have performed the best for their respective clubs.

Spending the first third of the season in last or near last place with one of the worst offenses in the league, as captain and co-captain, should mean you don’t sniff an All-Star game. Their form has been AWFUL.

    Brek Shea has been awful.

Fredy Montero leads the league in shots and isn’t even in the top 15 in goals scored. His goals per 90 minutes is one of the worst for a starting striker in the entire LEAGUE. His scoring chance percentage is 6.1%. Yes, 6.1%.

  20. eddie says:

What a waste of time with the All Star team. When need to concentrate more on building the strength of the league. Better exhibition games are between clubs from MLS and EPL, which can produce just as much income if not more than the ALL Star game. Total crap.

  21. Justin says:

Agreed. Now we just need Zusi to get more.

  22. jgsm1tty says:

No Alain Rochat on the ballot for Vancouver is crazy. Arguably better than YP Lee this year.

  23. David s. says:

Is it? (…meant to reward the players who have performed the best for their respective clubs.) I ask this sincerely. I assumed that’s what the end-of-season Best XI is for, but the All-Star game is for the fans to choose their favorites they want to see play in an exhibition game.

If it’s really supposed to be the former, then yeah, having the fans vote is stupid…but I don’t see anything wrong with having a popularity contest to reward the fans by allowing them to see the players they want to see.

  24. Old School says:

Biggest snub, of the year, in the world of football:

    Adam “Mr. Ballon d’or” Cristman

  25. Metro says:

Lindpere should not be listed while Dax McCarty and Brandon Barklage should.

  26. dino1er says:

It’s nice to see our man in black Dan Kennedy is finally getting a lil love.

  27. The Imperative Voice says:

Ryan Meara has a 1.5 GAA for one of the top 5 teams in the league.

  28. backheelism says:

I picked a full 22-man roster starting with Chris Wondolowski and Andy Gruenebaum… I think Kennedy is the most talented, but Gruenebaum is the most deserving. You can find the rest at backheelism dot wordpress etc.

  29. Jon Hill says:

Nice to see Demerit on there. He has had a solid season as has FC Dallas’s George John and Philly Unions Sheanon Williams. Geoff Cameron is on the hype train right now. Nowhere near his best.Surprised Agudelo is not on the hype train.

  30. kfly says:

    Yup.

  31. Dimidri says:

Grazzini bigger snub. Bad man. No it’s ‘cool’ and whatnot to proclaim RSL the most exciting team to watch, I think the Fire have a legit claim at that title.

  32. BSU SC says:

Although it’s not likely to happen, I think this starting line-up would be an entertaining one to watch.

    ———————–Rimando———————–

    Collin—————— Olave—————- Cameron

    Zusi——— Beckerman——Beckham———-Donovan

    ——————–De Rosario————————

    ————-Wondolowski———–Cooper————-

  33. BSU SC says:

“add Geoff Cameron who’s been terrible in MLS”

He has been the only good thing happening with the Houston defense. Without him they’re giving up a ton of goals. Cameron didn’t earn a national team call-up because he’s been playing “terrible”. He’s actually been very solid this year. It’s the players around him who have struggled.

  34. BSU SC says:

This is an exhibition game to reward the FANS, not the players. Don’t take it too seriously, it’s just a glorified popularity contest.

  35. BSU SC says:

The All-Star game is pure business. It’s one of the few cash cows that MLS has come to rely on every year. It can’t be “total crap” if it’s putting money into the league pockets. And one game does not take away from building the strength of the league. If anything, it gives the league some much needed attention.

  36. Mike D says:

Grazzini is on the ballot at least. Nyarko isn’t.

  37. fifawitz1313 says:

Off topic but, I have been too consumed with Euros and WCQ to really follow the MLs this last month. How has Agudelo been for Chivas? Is he playing? Playing well?

  38. MC Pharaoh says:

    Rimando
    Beitashour Olave Demerit Lee
    Beckerman Alonso
    Zusi Rivero
    Wondolowski

  39. Mike says:

Since no one has said it. I’ll throw it out there a guy that should be on the team for sure and one of the most underrated players in MLS is :Steve Beitashour. I think it hurts him that he plays for SJ and 10K home fans. Look at the number of assist he has to Wondo and the quality. One of the best two way players in the league.

  40. elgringorico says:

I like this but I think I would put a more technical or quicker forward in place of Cooper.

  41. Jhart says:

Nyarko deserves to at least be on the ballot , if not on the team (as a winger, not a forward. grazzini should be on the team. I don’t have much of a beef with the voting so far for forwards and defenders, but the midfield choices are poor. Lots of “usual suspects” and not any real thought about how players are actually performing thus far in the league. Are there coaches picks? if so, Nyarko and grazzini should be considered for those spots.

  42. Greg says:

Then how did Kyle Beckerman earn a national team call up? Because he is terrible.

  43. Chav Bollocks says:

As much as I generally agree with the argument that fan-voted All-Star games are silly because they’re all about reputation and not a reward for performance, MLS really needs its big names in this game at this stage in the league’s development.

An All-Star game with Donovan, Beckham, Adu, etc. is just much better for the league than one without one. They should just let coaches or the league pick the team though; I can’t see how fan voting is making the league tons of money, and this way they can make sure to get the right mix of headliners and standout performers.

  44. Steve McSteve says:

I don’t really think it’s all that worse than in other sports. Big name players tend to get selected even if they don’t deserve it. Look at how Iverson or Ming would do in the NBA.

Wondo and Henry are deserving. Kennedy is deserving. Beckerman and DeRo are deserving.

The defense has a whole bunch of central defenders, so obviously the coach will have to figure out the fullback situation.

Really, apart from Beckham and Donovan, two of the most famous players in the league, who are the fans wrong about?

  45. Camjam says:

    Trolls gonna troll

  46. tk421 says:

This will be the team toughest for Chelsea, based on curent forum, imo..

  50. BSU SC says:

He has struggled with the national team but he’s a force in MLS. You can’t say that he has not earned the right to get a look. He’s the best player on the best team in the league.

In any case, we’re talking about the MLS all-star game. Are you saying he doesn’t deserve to be there?

  51. seattlefutball says:

    link to mlssoccer.com

    yeah ok

he got stripped twice last game vs fcd in front of all those scouts no less. The first one he was able to get the ball back the second one was a turnover- break.

Hes been getting stripped, making bad back passes, and doing a myriad of other suspect actions in the back. Matt Doyle of mls.com pointed out all of this in a soccer podcast a few weeks ago noting that Camerons poor play has been his (Doyles) biggest surprise of the mls season thus far. This is all very Ream esque but I guess I should shut up and believe that despite all this he’s the best CB.
..But I wont as we CANNOT afford mediocre players to reside in the center of our back-line.

  52. seattlefutball says:

    thats what IM saying…
speaking of USMNT he’s actually played BETTER for them then he has in Houston thus far this year..my guess is that its probably
due to the fact he hasn’t been tested much as the one real time he was “tested” he blew it.

    Just saying..

Look I hope he LEARNS the position and BECOMES a force but there is no sense in pretending he is playing anywhere near an all-star level at CB

  53. seattlefutball says:

For fun do you even remember what happened at last years game when there wasn’t even a question about whether he earned his spot?

    link to youtube.com

Goal 3: Punked by a shoulder challenge then trotted to enjoy the off the crossbar alleyoop from a front row seat

  54. b says:

Any All-Star lineup without Dan Kenney, Beitashour, Olave, DeMerit, Lee, Alonso, Zusi, DeRosario, Sene, and Wondolowski is auto-fail (Henry has missed too much time, he goes on the bench).
So basically the entire starting 11 should be set aside from one midfielder. Voting should just be “choose your fourth midfielder”…

  55. b says:

That implies that you DO know about those other positions, but your picks indicate otherwise…

  56. Greg says:

  58. DCUPedro says:

There are some advantages to. Like not having the ballot stuffed for Seattle’s entire starting XI

  59. marco says:

The best DM in the MLS is not in the top 7? It’s a joke right?
