The Vancouver Whitecaps looked like they had three points in the bag when Martin Bonjour buried a second-half goal against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night, but New York's newest player picked a perfect time to deliver his first goal for his new club.
Heath Pearce scored a clutch equalizer in the 86th-minute to help the Red Bulls salvage a 1-1 draw at BC Place.
The match was a back-and-forth affair as the Red Bulls came into the match without the Designated Player tandem of Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez, but that didn't stop the visitors from giving Vancouver a good challenge. Ryan Meara helped keep the Whitecaps off the board for much of the match until Bonjour finally broke through in the 75th minute and slotted home a cross from Davide Chiumiento that snuck by two other teammates before finding the Whitecaps defender for his first goal of the season.
The Red Bulls needed just 11 minutes to respond and equalized when Pearce rose up unmarked to head home a Joel Lindpere cross to make the score 1-1.
