When a rookie goalkeeper can rattle off an undefeated month, it is definitely cause to take notice. But when a goalkeeper does so by putting together strong game after strong game, all you can do is stand up and applaud the kind of month Ryan Meara just had.
Not only did Meara help the New York Red Bulls go 4-0-1 during the month of May, he did so by making coutnless outstanding saves, and did so despite the fact New York was missing key defensive starters all month. Meara's efforts helped him rattle off four consecutive SBI MLS Rookie of the Week awards, and made him the easiest pick for SBI MLS Rookie of the Month since we started giving the award out.
Meara ran away from a good field of rookie candidates that included Nick DeLeon, Ray Gaddis, Austin Berry and Tony Cascio.
What did you think of Meara's month? What other rookie impressed you the most in May?

Ryan has been very impressive and has tremendous command of the goal area for a young GK. Congrats Ryan!
Jonny Steele from RSL?
Soccer aside, does anyone else think he looks like a young Larry Bird?
That’s Bill Hamid looking over his shoulder,…
I see our #1 in Dubai 2018. Oh wait, I mean Ireland’s #1. Wtf? SBI, can someone talk some sense into this kid?
yes. that’s mentioned all the time.
Lol just like the Germans would say to Fabian Johnson or Terrance Boyd, why play for the USA when you can play for Germany. Its a two way street we cant always complain when we lose players the same way. Besides if there is one position we have always had talent in is keeper.
That’s an oldish picture. I’ve noticed that Meara lately has done something to his “look.” (The extent of which must have been, “Please, anything so people stop comparing me to Larry Byrd.”)
Conrad, he didn’t do anything. Conde imposed on him and Lade “Rookie Haircuts”. He ended up taking off large portions of his hair to get rid of the shaved R. Check out Red Bulls site for story.
