Report: Ronaldinho’s Flamengo contract terminated after legal dispute

Ronaldinho is reportedly up for grabs.

According to reports out of Brazil, the former two-time FIFA World Player of the Year has won a legal dispute against Flamengo over $20 million in unpaid wages and other payments and as a result has been freed from his contract with the club. Flamengo can appeal the decision, but either way, it appears that the player's time with the Brazilian club is over, especially based on this statement released by Flamengo on Thursday.

After leaving AC Milan in 2011, Ronaldinho had been linked to MLS, specifically the Los Angeles Galaxy, prior to returning to his native country instead and signing with Flamengo. Ronaldinho, 32, has suffered a gradual dip in form since the height of his playing days. Although he has managed to score seven goals in 20 games across all competitions in 2012, his play was recently the subject of much scrutiny among Flamengo coaches and fans. He was also left out of Mano Menezes' roster for Brazil's current string of friendlies, likely ending his hopes of being an overage player on the Selecao's Olympic team.

What do you think of this development? Do you want to see a team in MLS make a run at signing Ronaldinho?

Cap that son of a gun now!

  2. Mike Ben says:

    Red Bulls!

  3. Brendan says:

Club America in Mexico could be real nasty with Ronaldinho playing left and Rolfi playing right behind Chucho up top.

  4. Chaz says:

This is where Red Bull need to spend their money! A true creative midfielder who would pack the Arena and create a buzz in the city! Do the right thing RBNY! Let Marquez go Buh bye and get Ronnie!

  5. sasha says:

Who needs a buzz in Harisson NJ

  6. Dinho says:

If any city needs a buzz, it’s Harrison, NJ.
    :)

  7. C.Jordan says:

They do have a huge Brazilian population there…would be nice!

  8. Chan says:

    Ronnie, go for Red Bulls!

  9. patrick says:

I would be the happiest man in the world if he somehow comes to Houston. I’d say a 1/999999999999999999999999.3 chance of this happening.

  10. Pepe says:

Actually somewhat likely that he’ll go to Houston because he’s been linked with LA, and AEG owns both LA and Houston. Since LA already has a bunch of expensive DPs, it’s only logical they’d want him in Houston.

    …oh wait, jk :(

  11. al17 says:

China, Dubai, Qatar or playing with Eto’O.

    He’s getting Footballer’s GDP Money.

    Won’t get that in MLS.

  12. PCFC says:

The question is, how much money would it cost?

  13. Joe says:

I’m a fan of MLS and all but could really care less if he played in the league.

His work ethic is quite poor off the ball and doesn’t hustle enough.

    Hes lazy. Dont want him.

  14. BSU SC says:

He was just paid $20 million on top of the + $100 million he made during his career over the past decade.

Ronaldinho likes to party. A lot. No way he goes to play in a place like Qatar. He enjoys women and liquor too much. There has to be little doubt that he’s at least considering coming to play in the United States. LA and NY are the party capitals of the world.

  15. tim says:

FC Dallas could use him for a few weeks… until he got injured like the rest of their squad

  16. dan says:

Graber needs to add a 4th DP slot and LA should sign him

  17. elgringorico says:

I bet he just calls it quits

  18. Ebert says:

LA sells Donovan to Everton and then brings in Ronaldinho. Anything to help that team!

  19. Big Silk says:

    ^^^ This.

MLS is calling an emergency meeting right now to figure out how they are going to get LA a 4th DP slot just for Ronny.

  20. Peter N says:

Ronaldinho goes to Philly. He was talking to a “non Galaxy” team around the time we werent sure if BEcks was coming back, and news arose it WAS an MLS team but WAS NOT the LA GALAXY. If the Philly rumor is true, it does make sense, Philadelphia has cap space, transfer cash and it is a major market and they’re looking to make a splash.

  21. bryan says:

i really hope he signs with MLS. LA probably can’t make this one happen unless they made some trades, but i dont see it happening. which probably means it’ll be NYRB who just so happen to be needing a play maker. Dinho, Henry, and Cooper could be ridiculous…

    i wish DCU could/would sign him :(

  22. Robert Daniels says:

Lol I know he’s been playing well but it sounds weird, “Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry and…Kenny Cooper”. One of these things is not like the other.

  23. Brian Looft says:

He’s not going to Philly. That place is a dump, and the fans are ugly. NYRB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Conrad says:

Poor Kenny Cooper! (One of these things runs in little blocks of concrete.)

  25. ec says:

What a perfect mess that would be bringing him to NY! I’d love it. You’d get such a half-assed effort.

  26. Michael F. SBI Mafia Original says:

Actually he wasn’t paid the $20 Million. Thus the lawsuit. But your point is well taken. I was thinking all the exact same thing. NYC crushes LA when it comes to a party city.

  27. Vic says:

Sounds like a move to the Red Bulls may be in the cards. Ronaldinho and Marquez in the midfield. Can you name a combo that would run/care less?

  28. Doug says:

    Get in RedBulls.

  29. Tony in Quakeland says:

Donovan goes to Everton. LA gets a DP back. The bring him in.

    I actually think it’s a reasonable bet

  30. JRP says:

Yes. They certainly need to waste more money. Marquez isn’t a big enough flush of cash down the pooper.

  31. dan says:

They can bring back Cuauthemoc Blanco!

  32. JRP says:

Go RedBulls. I would love to see another Diva jump in the mix there and mess up the only good season so far in franchise history. Go to NYRB.

  33. JRP says:

Yes. Add another DIVA to mess up the only good season the franchise has ever had. Go for Red Bulls!

  34. Mike says:

So much for the respectability of Brazilian football. Smacked down again.

  35. Ryan in NYC from NC says:

Go to China for a year or two Ronnie then join the newly formed NEW YORK CITY COSMOS!!!!!!!

  36. JRP says:

Sounds like a wonderful fairy tale.

  37. Gnarls (ex-Galaxy fan, current Cal FC fanboy) says:

    True statement.

  38. Gnarls says:

What is the obsession with a team that hasn’t existed in decades? I know they had a good run, but really, why not support the team that’s been there since ’96.

  39. 19691 says:

Vic – too funny. Dan thats unfair! Blanco couldn’t run but he definately cared and won my respect from his time in Chicago

  40. gruntparty says:

I’d like to see him in MLS.

  41. Good Jeremy says:

Donovan goes to Everton, Ronaldinho replaces him. It doesn’t take too much imagination.

  42. Christopher LA Galaxy fan says:

Just reading that made me Horny..Ronaldinho in a Galaxy jersey would be EPIC

  43. 99 says:

Toronto needs to get some of that trade magic back, work it out and sign him. I’d predict an 0-2012 regardless, but it’d be fun to watch another trainwreck roll through that town. :-)

  44. bryan says:

haha dude i know. i actually didn’t include him when i first wrote it. but he’s been tearing it up, so i added him. why not, you know?!

  45. Joe says:

I don’t really see how either city could crush the other, the two are completely different.

  46. bryan says:

    says to guy from jersey…

DC beats newark and philly any day! :)

  47. Jimbo Jones says:

    Because they’e never won ANYTHING.

  48. Drew says:

I’d like to see him go anywhere but LAG or NY… See if the league can get these big names to other markets… Chivas would be cool tho and my union can use all the help they can get

  49. whoop[whoop says:

Cept… League can’t “get” a player somewhere he doesn’t want to be.

  50. Alejandro 10 says:

You can say that again Jimbo Jones!

  52. bigprof says:

exactly what i was thinking. i think his three option are America, Redbulls or LA. I dont see him going to qatar or china. i think he wants to remain somewhat in the continental region of brazil

  53. fire bradley says:

    Cap him now!

  54. JFC says:

    rochester rhinos…take him NOW!

  55. oscarinfw says:

If it helps Donovan get to Everton, then I will be all for Ronaldinho going to the Galaxy.

I’d like to see him at FCD for selfish reasons but as someone noted before, he’d be out injured within 2-3 weeks.

  56. Eric K says:

If we’re talking about the Ronaldinho from like 5 years ago, sign him. But the current version, 32, doesn’t work hard or train hard, is that worth it? He’d get here and we’d find out very quickly if he wanted to remain a proper professional player or it was an extended vacation. I’m afraid of the skills he could bring to bear with the right attitude, but I’m equally afraid of the damage he could cause. For the cost involved, I’m not sold on the idea.

  57. cfig says:

Shhh, stop with the logical arguments.

  58. Mike says:

It’s not about how him coming to the league would affect us (current MLS fans). We mostly not care less. The fact is, he would bring in new fans to the league, which I think is a good thing. This would help RedBull’s growth (i’m a union fan) by getting more of the Brazilian Harrison population to games. If they can do that, then NY2 is a viable option in my opinion, creating a good rivalry which would be good for attendance and especially tv ratings…a bit of assuming but hey, one can dream.

  59. Will says:

Marquez improves Red Bull play when he is on the pitch….Reunited with Ronaldinho he would would be even better.

  60. Brewer says:

At this point in his career KFC has more upside than the other 2. When is in form, he is money.

Red Bulls need to get younger and more energetic….not older

  61. Huh says:

Ya, it never seemed to work in Barcleona….

  62. Pete says:

    Everton blows
