SBI MLS Player of the Week: Thierry Henry

For the second straight week, Thierry Henry catapulted the New York Red Bulls to victory. For the second straight week, Henry found the back of the net and set up a goal. For the second straight week, Henry was named SBI MLS Player of the Week.

Henry earned the honors after a performance in which he scored his first MLS hat-trick and assisted on another goal in the Red Bulls' 5-2 win over the Montreal Impact on Saturday. Henry, who currently leads the league in goals scored with five, was key to the Red Bulls bouncing back from a dismal first half and putting together a dominant second against the expansion Impact.

Henry beat out Portland Timbers forward Darlington Nagbe, who scored two good goals in a loss to Real Salt Lake; Maicon Santos, who netted twice and assisted once in D.C. United's rousing win over FC Dallas; and Kyle Beckerman, who netted the late winner for RSL against Portland.

What do you think of Henry being named Player of the Week? Think someone else should have won the award?

    respect the king

  2. DJ777 says:

Henry is so good, he’s gonna make Kenny Cooper look like a real striker.

  3. GSScasual says:

Kenny is flourishing under this French madman..

  4. Brandon Isaacson (@BrandonIsaacson) says:

    “respect the king” YEP!

  5. wilyboy says:

Henry definitely takes the cake. He’s single handedly pulling New York into contention at a time when Easter Conference teams are waking up.

  6. Diego says:

NYRB may actually do some damage if they can keep “BYTCH AZZ” Marquez in check

  7. Reid says:

I hope his play will translate to more people in the seats. I only watched the first half but was getting distracted by all the empty seats.
Marketing/spring games & little league/interest, whatever the reason the turnout was unfortunate.

The first paragraph was not meant to be a dig, it just sucks that one of our top markets draws so poorly.

  8. Neruda says:

Henry is a fantasy juggernaut right now. I wish I had taken him on my squad.

  9. Dave says:

Marquez red bull is like Reyna red bull, once good but now doesn’t run around and doesn’t perform the role of his position, so hurts the team.

Henry red bull is like Angel red bull, skilled finisher but walks half the time and while good now will decline in 1-2 years to the point where someone would be better.

  10. DJ777 says:

    Right @ Dave.
I am hoping that in the next few years the MLS will have enough interest so the league wont have to overpay for aging stars to gain
recognition. If Sporting KC was in a bigger market then they’d get more press. I’m not a fan of the team, but they are young, talented and fun to watch.

Tough week for Player of the Week

Hard to deny Henry honors with a hat trick and assist and involved in the play leading to the PK.

Nagbe’s awesome finish was only out awesomed by Beckermans!

  12. Clint says:

Dempsey’s contract @ fulham is up soon. Maybe MLS ownership will fork over some big bucks and bring our boy back home to the states. Why overpay for aging Euro-talent

  13. GSScasual says:

Dempsey has firmly stated he will play until retirement in Europe.

  14. Clint says:

    shucks!

  15. Eugene says:

Hat trick = Player of the Week

  16. Gon Darber says:

    Well deserved.

  17. alf says:

Henry has put the Red Bulls on his back and is carrying them: 5 goals and 3 assists in 4 games. Nevermind player of the week. Is it too early to start MVP talk?
