Santos 6, Toronto FC 2: Match Highlights

The second goal looked offsides. Had Santos not scored the second goal, Toronto would have been able to sit back and defend longer. Its extremely rare that US or MLS can get a fair result in Mexico. It would be nice to see how MLS teams stack up against Mexican teams in a fair competition.
what’s that? do I hear a whambulance?
No way Harden should still be employed by this league
Good fight from TFC, but Santos is a great team.
Has any American won the CCL? Would Gomez be the first? I think DC won it back in the day, but I think it was called Champions Cup. Just curious …
DC and LA won it when it was the champions cup but it was very different back then. DC and LA hosted the entire tournaments they won and only a few teams were invited. No MLS team has won a CCL that requires traveling to away games more in line with other regional club championships.
So in this “fair competition” you speak of, how do you imagine the worst team in MLS stacks up against the best team in Mexico at the Mexican clubs own stadium?
If we had instant replay on goal scoring situations, the ref’s would have seen that the hand ball was unintentional an unavoidable.
Could have been a much different game if it weren’t for the the second penalty.
I hope that MLS, if not CONCACAF, starts to implement video review of goal scoring situations.
I don’t think there’s that much difference between MLS teams. There is a salaray cap which means parity. I think Mexican teams are slightly better. However, a Latin American referee in a hostile Mexican stadium usually favors Mexico. If the officiating was fair, I Mexico would win most Concacaaf tournaments but MLS would have won a few by now.
Toronto was actually outplaying Santos before the two bad calls. At halftime Toronto had more shots and more corner kicks. Thats in addition to outplaying them in Toronto.
Wow, Santos destroyed its MLS competition the last two rounds. Amazing aggregate results. Hurts people’s argument that MLS is a better league. Results are pretty apparent. Again Mex has two teams in finals.
Sucks, would have loved seeing LA vs Santos. Think LA would have done better. Assuming they improve their backline play.
Jose Torres won it in 2009 with Pachuca, I believe.
Hercs’ Santos teammates should have rewarded him with one of the pk attempts in order for him to attempt a hat trick.
Yeah, I was thinking that too.
The other thought I had was that TFC is pretty gutsy to play the game with only 10 players. They really should look into getting a center back and put that cone back on the practice field.
Go Herc!
Maybe the TFC staff can review the video and remind their players that they should use their feet when the ball is that close to the ground.
The video only shows you when the goal scorer receives the ball not when it was kicked to him. You do not have enough video evidence to make an assessment on an offsides call.
TFC’s second goal was a thing of beauty. Gorgeous sidefoot chip played in by Soolsma and a damn good finish by plata splitting two defenders in very tight space.
They probably don’t like an American getting too much credit.
No one has made the argument that MLS is the better league. Many feel the results wouldn’t bee one sided if we had fair referees. Mexican League budgets are 2-3 times higher than MLS because of the US tv contract (Univision/Telemundo).
the defending by tfc is terrible to say the least.I cant believe thats the best back 4 they can come up with
as far as 6-1 games go that wasn’t that bad of a game.. just a few bad defending moments. Santos is just really good! The7 must have the most goals in this tourny they destroyed Colorado and Metapan in group play, Seattle in the QF and now TFC. I believe they average 3+ goals/game.
complain all you want about the refs. Next time take care of business at home. Maybe your home team should be more threatening and hostile to the ref.
Once TFC scraps Julian DeGuzman and uses his salary cap hit to get a decent CB or 2 decent players they’ll be laughing.
Anyway, good game by both teams.
they probably have a designated player that takes pks…
nice try on the “hating americans” thing.
I know this may be old news but on Herc… I know he’s played with us on USMNT, but I was going through Santos roster and Mexican teams have a 5 foreign player cap, and counting hercules they have 6! I know Luduena wanted to apply for Mexican citizenship/naturalization, but not sure if he went through with it. Is Herc playing as a Mexican national? or a US citizen? Anyone have any info on this?
Just curious
Gotcha – very cool. Thanks guys.
At least one of his parents is Mexican, that makes him Mexican so he doesn’t count as foreign player.
Nobody was crying about “fair referees” when all the calls went Toronto’s way last week.
