Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

The race at the top of the English Premier League table is getting tougher by the week, and that tightening competition will make today's showdown between Tottenham and Manchester United all the more important.

Arsenal's recent run of form suddenly has the Gunners just four points behind Tottenham for third place in the Premier League, meaning Spurs don't have much room for error. They'll look to hold serve at home against a Manchester United side looking to close the gap on Manchester City for first place to two points with a road win.

Sunday's action also features some intense derbies, as Roma and Lazio collide in the Rome Derby, while Newcastle and Sunderland clash in the Tyne-Wear Derby.

If you are hoping to see some Americans in action, look no further than the Bundesliga, where TSG Hoffenheim is in action. Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams started in the U.S. national team's win against Italy, and should play roles for Hoffenheim against Cologne.

  1. ManicMessiah says:

Awful challenge by Cattermole on Tiote, could have been sent off less than a minute into the game.

  2. ManicMessiah says:

Newcastle have been second best the entire half. Can’t complain about the penalty, Williamson had a hold of his shirt, but it would be nice to see some consistency on this call, especially if it comes up again in the game.

  3. Mig22 says:

So, I’m not watching it but from the tracker, it looks like the Newcastle-Sunderland game is a war.

  4. away goals says:

    AVB out.

  5. ManicMessiah says:

    Ameobi like!!!!!

  6. question says:

Has anyone been watching the Nurnberg over the past several weeks? When not injured, ESPN has been listing Timmy Chandler as a Forward. He’s listed as a MF today, but wondering if anyone knew whether Timmy was actually playing FW and how he looked.

  7. This Guy says:

They’ve listed him as a FW for over a year now. To answer your question; they don’t have a clue where he is playing. He appears to be at RB according to other sources.

  8. predicto says:

Dempsey with 2 dangerous runs – and only 10 min. Fulham with all the possession and looking sharp.

  9. Mig22 says:

He’s been listed as MF for the past 4 or 5 games including today in the Gamecast. I think he’s playing left wing most of the time but I’m not sure.

In November, he was definitely playing full back (see game vs. Schalke).
He’s definitely not a ‘forward’ though.
    Cheers!

  10. Matt says:

Fulham with 60% of possession, and looking the more dangerous of the sides. Wolves have had a couple of counter opportunities. Dempsey has had a couple of careless moments, but still playing dangerously

  11. away goals says:

Left wing or right? I haven’t seen any nuremberg matches, but yahoo’s uk site has listed him as a right winger.

  12. Matt says:

1-0 Fulham in the 37th off a corner. Pogrebenyak (sp?) with the goal

  13. jgdurl says:

Fulham with a chance to jump to 8th with a win today. Playing excellent football lately. Pogrebnyak looks a great signing for Jol.

  14. jgdurl says:

Mike Dean throws out cautions and penalties like hotcakes. The first half of Newcastle-Sunderland was a complete joke.

  15. jgdurl says:

Chandler’s been playing RW for Nurnberg last few weeks.

  16. predicto says:

Fulham finally scores – after all those chances. It’s their new russian probneyaik. Now maybe the flood gates will open and Dempsey will get his.

  17. Mig22 says:

I have to claim ignorance about where he is usually playing (although right side seems likely) but back in January, I did see him log about the last 10 minutes on the LW.

Between him, Danny Williams, and Fabian Johnson we have some versatile types, eh?

  18. Matt says:

Make that two for the new signing on a poor give away and a quick counter by Johnson to the P man. 2-0 Fulham in the 44th

  19. away goals says:

Just pulled up a stream of their game. He’s playing rw for now.

For the usmnt he could slot directly into the role d williams played against italy and be far more dangerous in attack.

  20. predicto says:

Fulham looking too good, too much space, too much possession. Wolves incompetent today.

  21. Mig22 says:

    Thanks!

Actually, I can see him there as well. As long as ‘Dolo is healthy and can still play RB, the USMNT needs to work Chandler in somewhere given his ability and RW would seem to be the place.

  22. This Guy says:

Thanks for the clarification. I’m too busy watching Fulham to jump over to the Nurnberg match.

  23. This Guy says:

You have to feel for Terry Connor. He inherited a deflated squad that lacks cohesion. Fulham are playing well but Wolves are just plain awful.

  24. Jamie Z. says:

I’d welcome him at Villa, but his track record in Portugal does fit our current M.O. of overwhelming underachievement and baffling and disappointing administrative choices.

  25. g? says:

Dempsey should’ve scored. Open shot from ~8m out, sent it weakly on frame. Pretty easy save.

  26. Jamie Z. says:

    Deuce!

  27. g? says:

GOAL DEMPSEY!!! 8th in 9 for Fulham!

  28. Matt says:

beautiful run and finish by Dempsey. Spanish commentators stating how Dempsey is destined for bigger things.

  29. predicto says:

Dempsey scores – he looks supremely confident

  30. Matt says:

4-0 Fulham P-man with a hat trick on an easy rebound after some good work by Johnson

  31. predicto says:

Fulham needs to save some for later – it’s not gonna be this easy next time…

  32. Jamie Z. says:

Pavel Pogrebnyak looking and playing like an absolute man-beast. Fulham running riot.

  33. Mig22 says:

I have to admit, this Rome derby is pretty exciting. Normally, as previously discussed, I find Serie A a snoozer but this match is a corker right now.

  34. Jamie Z. says:

Save some for later? Next time? I do not follow.

  35. Andrew H. says:

Wolves wouldn’t make the MLS playoffs. They are truly terrible. Calling Dempsey to Liverpool in the summer.

  36. g? says:

If they played every game like this, Wolves would get relegated from MLS…

  37. liz2 says:

Sometimes I think people forget how exciting La Liga can be, outside the 2 clasico teams. All the same skill with less diving and fewer divas. Athletic Bilbao vs Real Sociedad is turning into a really exciting game. On that note, I’m expecting someone in the PL to try and get Llorente this summer, the dude is a beast.

  38. Citronomics says:

You know, what’s great about this match is the number of turnovers on both sides leading to a more open and frenzied play. I’m sure Serie A tactical gods are weeping at the clumziness of both sides but MUCH more entertaining.

  39. Mig22 says:

    absolutely agree. Beautiful play.

  40. Mig22 says:

yeah, it’s not the piece of slow-moving, tactical performance are that is Serie A but damn there’s a lot going on out there.

And NOW there’s a 2nd yellow vs. Lazio player and a fun 6 minutes to ensue.

  41. Jamie Z. says:

    And another for Dempsey!

  42. away goals says:

    B!TCHES CANT SEE ME

  43. g? says:

    DEUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  44. ernj says:

    Double Deuce!

  45. Alex says:

    Deuce just dropped a deuce!!!

  46. NATO making strides in Afghanistan? says:

Wolves will be relegated along with QPR and Wigan

  47. NATO making strides in Afghanistan? says:

Deuce with his 11th and 12 goal in the PL. 18 goals in all competitions with 11 games left. Dude could seriously score 20 league goals if he keeps the STEAM up.

  48. jgdurl says:

Fulham beat the living piss out of Wolves today.

Pogrebnyak is so much more a threat than Zamora. QPR thought they had struck gold.

  49. NATO making strides in Afghanistan? says:

damn that Russian now has 5 league goals in 3/4 matches for Fulham. Outrageous

  50. malkin says:

Just finished fulham and switched over the Nurnberg only to see Chandler being subbed off as the Eurosport commentator said “not really surprised by this, he hasn’t had the best of games, the young american”

  51. Todd Marsch says:

I don’t know. After watching Bolton the past couple weeks, I don’t see how they stay up. They just seem inept and disorganized all over the field. I hope they stay up for the sake of Ream and Holden, but their only hope seems to be other bottom dwellers just being worse somehow.

  52. away goals says:

After pobryankzk’s hat trick today, there are now 43 players who have equalled or surpassed the combined five league goals scored by torres and carroll.

They were overpriced, is what I’m saying.

  53. NATO making strides in Afghanistan? says:

quite interesting since he had only 1 goal in 14 matches for Stuttgart this season before joining. Fulham need to shove out the money to keep him

  54. malkin says:

Would have loved to see Chandler in place of Williams against Italy. However, that’s only because of the rest of the injuries that we had on the team. I think we’re still best putting Chandler at LB and Fabian on LW as long as dolo is performing…although to be honest I am excited about the prospect of Chandler at RB and Fabian at LB given how stacked we are in the midfield (just as long as that doesn’t mean Danny Williams is at RW of course).

  55. cajun says:

Hmmm, so that’s what a “perfect” hat trick is. From the P guy for Fulham, One with the left foot, one with the right foot and one with a header…Oh, and nice brace Deuce!

  56. mwc says:

Yanks Abroad Video Highlights has the videos of Dempsey’s goals up.

  57. away goals says:

Johnson starting at left back for hoffenheim. Neither williams nor gyau made the matchday roster. From yahoo.uk.

I assume williams is serving an accumulation suspension as he took a yellow in their last game. But I don’t know for sure.

  58. kevin says:

Dempsey needs a film on his life ready before the WC in 2014. whose with me?

what A-list star can pull off a performance of Deuce? I want Soderbergh to direct

  59. Kevin_Amold says:

    Daniel Radcliffe….

  60. ac says:

What is Deuce drinking?!…Dude’s on fire!

  61. away goals says:

Controversy in the two games featuring americans. Hoffenheim have a goal disallowed after a questionable offside interpretation. Spurs have one wiped out for an adebayor handball.

  62. malkin says:

Ya…wondering why Ives is tweeting that Williams is on the bench. Certainly everything I’m seeing shows him not on the roster.

  63. ACS says:

PSV was destroyed by Twente 6-2, AZ all alone at the top the table now. PSV and Twente one point back

  64. away goals says:

Williams interviewed at halftime of the hoffenheim game for sky. He was asked about the usmnt and jk, but I don’t speak german so I couldn’t tell you what was said.

  65. dean says:

is modric normally this useless at taking free kicks?

  66. marco says:

Spurs are toast. They’ll have a difficult time holding 4th. Harry put out a side that one could not see being top of table, Livemore, Saha, Sandro, etc, no Bale, VDV, or Parker. What’s worst, Moldric is in terrible form. Also both Spurs FBs were beaten for goals once more.

  67. Citronomics says:

Commentators for ManU v. Spurs said Giggs is at 901 club appearances. Apparently, he needs 2 more (?) to break Paolo Maldini’s record. Phenomenal stuff.

  68. cajun says:

    Chuck Norris

  69. away goals says:

So you like both arsenal AND chelsea to overtake them? The same chelsea side that just lost to west brom?

Obviously there are no sure things, but spurs are still heavy favorites to finish top four.

  70. kimo says:

    no controversy … Ade a clear handball … and I’m a gunner’s fan.

  71. Andy in Atlanta says:

Ben Foster… has that sharp face with an edge and a gritty tough look… plus I would imagine Foster could at least not look retarded running around on the field when filming footballing scenes…

  72. Andy in Atlanta says:

    Ben Foster the actor BTW…haha

  73. away goals says:

Yeah definite handball, no real controversy on that one.

Not sure if your gunners disclaimer is to make you sound more impartial… or less.

  74. MemRook says:

Right, you’re an Arsenal fan so presumably you “detest” Spurs. Therefore, your “…and I’m a Gunners fan…” statement would only discredit your opinion on a Tottenham call, no? (By the way I totally agree with you, Adebayor clearly handled, just think your Gunner statement was irrelevant.)

  75. Michael Stypulkoski says:

That’s the third hat-trick by a Fulham player this season, only Manchester United has as many.

  76. JS says:

I believe his Gunner’s claim is to show his distaste for Man U…not Tottenham

  77. Dimidri says:

So Deuce now has 16 goals across all competitions(12 in the PL leaving him tied for 7th, 3 in the FA Cup, and 1 in the Europa League). Where does that place him among all time American scorers in the EPL? I presume he’ll have a hard time breaking the non-PL scoring record which I think is Bradley’s with 25 with Heereveen(Sp)?

  78. Jeff says:

Wikipedia has him at 18 goals across all competitions.

  79. Dimidri says:

Yeah, according to the Europa League webpage he only has 1 goal, but Wikipedia says 3. This also isn’t counting the post keeper ‘own goal’ which the dubious goals panel might overturn.

  80. Dimidri says:

Never mind you’re right, it’s 18, the europa league website is only counting goals from 2012 in the part I was at for some reason, because here are 2 from august in the europa league– link to youtube.com
    So yeah 18(12 league+ 3 FA Cup+ 3 Europa League + maybe 1 dubious goal)

  81. away goals says:

Arsenal fans hate spurs fans more than tar heels hate blue devils.

  82. Shounen Bat says:

So, um, was Chandler never really injured? It just seems like a miraculous recovery/very convenient timing. I would say it makes sense that his coach wouldn’t want to release him, but the game was in Europe. I don’t know, maybe the extra three or so days really made the difference…

  83. abc says:

That Mexican beer he does commercials for?

I forget the name, not Dos Equis or Corona…

  84. abc says:

Can you at least say made up German-sounding words with an accent? Schleizenbargen.

  85. timmytwoshoezzz says:

If Dempsey wants to play European football, particularly Champions League football, next year, he isn’t going to be playing in ‘Pool.

  86. Brett says:

Probably so. Manager puts him on the injured list to keep Klinsmann from making a call-up. Smart move for a team that needs every point it can get. Hopefully Chandler still wishes to play for the US. I believe he can still switch.

  87. Mhat says:

In Serie A action, Inter down 2-0 against Catania in the first 45. they pull back two late to make it 2-2 in the 80th minute. 84th now and Inter have created a few more chances. Very exciting contest in the final minutes.

  88. Indigo Montoya says:

I think he’s outgrown Liverpool at the moment in terms of potential suitors – he can’t score like Carroll that’s for sure. I don’t believe he’ll move to another club in England if he leaves Fulham – he’s headed to the continent to a CL club.

  89. Indigo Montoya says:

    Modelo!!! Tomala!

  90. Adi from Oregon says:

    How about Gesundheit?

  91. Adi says:

Or – “vor noch eine Tor” (forward for another goal)?

  92. marco says:

I see Spurs dropping points in 6 of their remaining matches. Chelsea has new skipper Gunners are very hot. There may be a battle for 3rd and 4th.

  93. marco says:

It should have read holding 3rd, thanks.

  94. I wanted to create the richest experience I could. For me that meant a really dense schedule.
