The Mexican Under-23 national team is off to a flying start in Olympic qualifying.

Mexico kicked off its quest to reach the Summer Games in London with a 7-1 thrashing of Trinidad and Tobago in a Group B match at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. on Friday night.

Marco Fabian led the way for El Tri with a hat trick, while Alan Pulido, Israel Jimenez, Diego Reyes and Javier Cortes also scored for Mexico, Orlando City midfielder Kevin Molino netted late for Trinidad and Tobago to prevent Mexico from recording a shutout in a game that saw the CONCACAF heavyweight take 35 shots.

In the first match of the Group B doubleheader, Honduras took care of business with a 3-1 win over Panama. Eddie Hernandez and Mario Martinez netted for Los Catrachos before Yairo Glaize pulled one back for the Panamanians early into the second half. Alexander Lopez put the game away with a goal three minutes before the death.

D.C. United's Andy Najar played 59 minutes for Honduras in the match, while FC Dallas left back Carlos Rodriguez went the distance for Panama.

So I’m just going to ask the obvious question: Which is a more impressive feat: beating T&T by 6 goals or beating Cuba by 6 goals?

  2. DingDong says:

Not sure, but Cuba did play a man down.

  3. SilverRey says:

Who all is involved from the MLS for these qualifiers? It seems that everyone but Mexico has an MLSer in the lineup.

  4. Did Andy Najar play?

  5. NC Jeff says:

When I first read that Cuba had to play a man down, I seriously wondered if one of them had defected right in the middle of the match.

  6. Brett says:

Did you learn how to read in school?

  7. thaDeuce says:

Cuba is much better than T&T

    Incorrect…

El Salvador beating 10 man Cuba 3-0 in second half. El Salvador looks technical, nice passing, good attack.

They’ll give the USA a good warm up test before mexico, since they play similar.

Mexico looked very good, very polished. They went all out the entire game to run up the goals. In the 75th, minute at 5-0, one El Tri attacker kicked the T&T goalie in the head trying to score. That’s hungry. I don’t know why he wasn’t carded, (intention is not needed), but that may be their Achilles heel, reckless play, eventually it will get called.

My apologies, but are you stupid?

  12. Jya says:

El Salvador, Cuba and Mexico don’t have MLS players everyone else has 1 or more
