For the second consecutive offseason, Chris Wondolowski has signed a contract extension with the San Jose Earthquakes.

A year to the day after signing a new deal with the San Jose Earthquakes, Wondolowski has again agreed to renew his contract with the club. The new extension will keep the 29-year-old Wondolowski in San Jose through the 2014 season.

Wondolowski, who had been linked with clubs in Europe this offseason, has been one of the best offensive players in MLS the past two years. In 2010, the U.S. international scored 19 goals en route to winning the Golden Boot award. He followed that up by finding the back of the net 16 times last season.

What do you make of Wondolowski's extension? Do you see him continuing to light it up in MLS?

  1. Petaluman says:

I heard his new contract last year gave him a raise up to around $150k a year (I think he was making 40-50k). Wonder what it’s gone up to now? 225-250K?

  2. Dennis says:

While past performance does not guarantee future results. It is the best indicator on the plus side. Having seen how hard he works to make himself available I would say he is a favorite to once again be at or near the top of goal-scoreres in the MLS.

  3. Dennis says:

    er. goal-scorers

  4. Gnarls says:

Too bad MLS has such a wonky system of player ownership. If this were Europe, he’d be bought up right away by a WINNING club.

  5. Charles says:

yeah, I don’t want San Jose to have good players either.

  6. Gnarls says:

I think you missed my point. That’s like saying “I don’t want Man United to have good players either” when CR7 was sold to Real Madrid.

  7. scott says:

i have really grown to like Wondo, i wish him the best. I really like seeing him in the golden boot race.

  8. Tom says:

This is what the Union should have done with Le Toux. Say what you want about San Jose, at least they treated their star player right.

  9. Tony in Quakeland says:

So Dennis, work in the mutual fund insdustry, do you?

  10. nato says:

i’m sure he’s now making $250-300 K a season. He might even be making more with endorsements. If he keeps it up, he’ll become a regular winter call up candidate.

  11. Idaho Brian says:

Smart move by Wondo…he is poised to be a best XI player in MLS and keep his name in consideration for national team callup.

  12. slyboy says:

178,000 was last years number i believe, so yeah he probably making around that if not more after this extension

  13. slyboy says:

right….Van Persie at Arsenal, Miccoli at Palermo
Santi Cazorla at Malaga are all great examples of this “winning” club system.

  14. slyboy says:

Your point was pretty stupid, since you can find tons of great players that are not on “winning” teams. If you meant Prestige that is fine, but say that, you might actually be right.

  15. David St. Hubbins says:

Excellent move by the Quakes front office and by Wondo. Great move for both parties. Handshakes all around. Good to see the league retain this kind of talent as opposed to losing it to europe.

  16. Bo says:

Too bad that is all SJ have. Get rid of Frank and you can start to build a team.

  17. Wilbur says:

He has earned it….He may finally have some good service with the playmaker SJ picked up. He can forget about that with USA though.

SJ still needs to add a DP before they move to the new stadium.
