Must-See Goal: Cristiano Ronaldo

Real Madrid was able to hold off a feisty challenge from Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, and did so in large part to the clever goal from Cristiano Ronaldo, who converted a long-range back-heel to give Madrid a vital 1-0 road victory.

The victory helped keep Real Madrid ten points clear of Barcelona and keep Cristiano Ronaldo neck and neck with Lionel Messi for Spanish Primera Player of the Year honors.

Here is Ronaldo's golazo:

Nice goal, a rarity to see a backheel from that far out get through that much traffic. I give it a 8/10…

My preference is for intricate team goals. Maybe everyone else thinks it’s a better goal than I do.

  2. jonk says:

Yeah, while it is indeed “must see” in the sense that you haven’t seen a goal like that since the last time you played rec ball, it hardly seems a golazo. In my mind, backheels should be slick, not ugly with a hop to get the requisite power behind them to score.

I’m no fan of the preening show pony that is Christiano Ronaldo, but I cant deny that was nasty. I think that’s why I dislike him so much: he’s just as good as he is infuriating.

P.S. I don’t understand what is going on with all this snobbery going on here every time Ives posts a goal. I’m not affiliated with Ives in any way, and I’m not a fan boy, but it gets really irritating every time someone does something interesting or noteworthy to note the chorus of “not good enough for me” from a bunch of hard-to-please soccer snobs on this site. As if somehow finding everything beneath you was validation of your own sophisticated tastes. Sod that! Soccer is supposed to be enjoyable, if you just can’t be arsed to enjoy it at its very best, what on earth are you doing here? If you can’t enjoy the game for what makes it beautiful, go read a book or do something productive.

    HALA MADRID

  5. jonk says:

Come on now. I also find it infuriating when people bag on every “must see” video Ives posts, because I usually find that they’re worth watching even if they aren’t the best goal ever produced. But this is an ugly, lucky goal.

  6. Jamie Z. says:

The best players find ways to score.

And if I’d ever scored a goal like that, I’d still be talking about it now.

  7. cajun says:

P.S. I don’t understand why anyone elses opinion irritates you so much when you’re allowed your own as well. Perhaps you should go read a book if you get irritated so easily and feel you have to vent it here.

  8. Kanuni says:

    Is ALLLLLAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the new GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL?:)

  9. Warren says:

Very nice. He knew he needed to get some power on it from that distance, yeah it was lucky but also perfectly placed just inside the far post.

Meaning, very high skill, and a game-winning goal off a backheel. So that counts as a golazo in my book, even if not the usual high power blast. Give the man credit.

And if I was as talented and rich as Christiano, I’d be a little stuck-up too. So what, the online rage is because you’re jealous of the guy who gets all the girls? Get over it, you are no Ronaldo.

  10. Jamie Z. says:

I am reading a book. But I check in because I enjoy keeping up on soccer news and highlights. I don’t think I’m alone in noticing a vocal minority of really insufferable soccer snobs on here that have to moan about every quibble or about every detail on here that isn’t to their liking.

  11. jonk says:

Please point me to this “online rage”.

  12. jonk says:

Thank you for pointing out that the best players find ways to score. I was not aware that they were all golazos. Duly noted.

  13. Jamie Z. says:

I wouldn’t and that’s why I dislike him. When you’re the best, you can go two routes: you can go the Ronaldo route or you can go the Messi route. Ronaldo is the yang to Messi’s yin.

  14. Danenaz says:

I love goals where you do something instinctual in the moment and when it comes off you yourself are a little surprised, or at least impressed by what you did. His reaction gives me this impression, what a great feeling that is.

  15. BCC says:

Great goal. Thanks for posting, Ives.

For the “not good enough” crowd, find video of Ronaldo’s third goal against Levante from a couple weeks ago. Sick with a capital K.

Am also curious about people who complain about Ronaldo being cocky: do you watch him play every week? Do you like athletes to be “role models”? He has made that entire team better this season.

Messi is probably the least interesting human being on the planet aside from his football. I once heard a reporter ask him what he likes to read and he said, “I don’t really read.” But does that stuff, in the end, really matter?

  16. Gary says:

    I know you so well.

    Haha

  17. Pig Man says:

    that hair is ridiculous

  18. H2Oman says:

Hilarious. Looked like everyone froze… absolutely, in-F-***ing-credulous… as the ball dribbled through and found the back of the net. Why? The shot was completely unexpected. Who has the audacity to take that shot? A world class-ingrate of a talent and pure scorer. That s**t is fun.

  19. WendellGee says:

“Must see” does not mean “greatest goal ever” people. It doesn’t necessarily even mean “golazo”. It means something entertaining.

  20. Kevin_Amold says:

It was decent goal for me. I expressed that opinion, also that I prefer other types of goals. Therefore, if I read your post correctly, that makes me a “hard-to-please soccer snob”?

Isn’t that the point of posts like these? To show an interesting goal and spur discussion? Is the only proper discussion of such posts to fawn? Is dissent tolerated?

  21. biff says:

+1 I read about that goal and wanted to see it. Thanks for posting. If Messi, who, by the way, got a yellow card for cheating with his right hand yesterday, would have done the same goal, people would be ooohing and aaaahing and calling it sublime.

  22. Jamie Z. says:

I wasn’t referring to you specifically. I was referring to a widespread phenomenon. I also think there’s a massive difference between discussion and people disagreeing with everything anyone says on here and calling each other idiots. I’d love to see some intelligent discussion.

  24. Joamiq says:

I’m amazed that that got through.

  25. PD says:

Lucky or not, it’s hard to deny that the guy is incredibly imaginative and ALWAYS trying for goal. Tons of respect for that element of his game.

  26. FGL says:

You just dont like Cristiano just because your girlfriend/wife likes him so much…
