With leagues coming off their winter breaks, and England diving into FA Cup action, today's slate of matches will give us the first good schedule of activity of the new year.

The Mexican League gets its Clausura season underway this weekend, as Herculez Gomez and Santos Laguna take on Jose Torres and Pachuca. Defending Apertura champions Tigres do battle against Cruz Azul in what should be another exciting clash.

Serie A kicks things off today, with Lazio and Inter Milan in action, while Portugal features the always-exciting match-up between Oguchi Onyewu's Sporting CP and Porto.

In FA Cup action, Bolton will look to hold off Macclesfield Town, while Aston Villa take on Bristol Rovers in another match-up of David vs. Goliath.

  1. hogatroge says:

Saw that all three Yanks played for the Xolos against Morelia today. Castillo went the full 90″, Corona was a halftime sub, and Garza got ~17.”

Anyone have any more insight on how they played?

  2. hogatroge says:

Deuce has already dropped a deuce on Charlton today.

  3. Jon says:

This dude for Macclesfield just hit a sick goal against Bolton

  4. jbrader says:

    He will not be housebroken.

  5. Dimidri says:

    any everton stream?

  6. Jamie Z. says:

    Well played.

  7. torporindy says:

Jeez, where is the guy who always predicts a Dempsey hat trick?

  8. Matt says:

and there goes his hattrick… Great day for Clint and Donovan with the assist on Everton’s lone goal so far. Whitbread and Norwish up 4-1…

  9. Dakota Sillyman says:

I’m pretty sure there’s like ten of them… and the one day they don’t show up, maybe they were jinxing him.

  10. sandtrout says:

The Fulham site says he actually DID score a hat trick! They let him take a penalty and he actually made it. Definitely a reverse jinx since nobody demanded that he score a hat trick on SBI. Maybe that’s been the trick all along!

  11. Wm. says:

Is this the first time an American has scored a hat trick in the FA Cup?

  12. EvertonBrian says:

Has anyone been watching Everton? How’s Landon been?

  13. hogatroge says:

Looks like a lot of us came on here with the same comment in mind, lol!

  14. downintexas says:

Dang it, he is the Duece not the Triade nor the trinity nor Triplex.

    good job Duece

  15. hogatroge says:

Gio dos Santos finally saw some action with Tottenham.

  16. seth says:

    anyone got everton highlights?

  17. David says:

I didn’t see the game but the report said he assisted the first goal (took the corner), helped set up the second goal and later hit the cross bar.

  18. EvertonBrian says:

    Nice, thank you.

  19. ShaggyReAL says:

    WHo does Jonathan play for?

  20. Isaac says:

I’m pretty sure he’s with Barcelona. Quick check of Wikipedia might change my mind though…

  21. Isaac says:

It’s actually FC Barcelona B… A side that plays in Adelante, the league right below La Liga.

  22. Khan says:

“David Moyes’s side could advance only with a goal from a corner and a controversial penalty as they struggled to break down a side 96 places beneath them in the football pyramid.”

That’s from the Guardian. Tamworth is a non-league side and they played toe-to-toe with Everton. It was ugly.

  23. chris says:

FC Dallas stadium fills up nice for college football

  24. abc says:

All those “Dempsey will score a brace today” people were wrong once again!

  25. abc says:

Nope, first since Chris Cleary for Worksop Town in 2004, according to Brian Straus’ twitter.

  26. Dakota Sillyman says:

That’s what I meant. Looking back it’s definitely worded poorly though.

  27. fischy says:

Guzan does what Guzan does best, saving PKs.

  28. Citronomics says:

And this time hindsight is sweet. Other times it sucks even though I’ve shown restraint in not posting, I’m just as guilty for predicting Deuce goals in my mind.

  29. NE Matt says:

Really? Sweet! I saw he has 6 saves but didn’t see he has a PK save in the mix too!

  30. PD says:

Random thought based on the article photo: I wonder how much income the mexican sides get for all the adverts on their jersey’s and if they realize it gets a point where folks actually stop reading them… the hodgepodge kinda makes my ADHD go “hey look a squirrel…” I get one sponsor across the chest, but that’s a bit much for me. Wonder if anyone cares to agree or disagree?

  31. rory says:

It was, surprisingly, Clint’s first ever professional hat trick. And it came against lower division opponents.

  32. rory says:

What? No complaints from fans that they just couldn’t be bothered to travel 30 minutes from downtown Dallas to see a game? I’m stunned!

  33. chris says:

It’s like NASCAR out of hand

  34. Modibo says:

Straus says it was his first college OR pro hat trick!

  35. SD says:

garza looked intimidated as he came in late….i agree castillo looked surprisingly ok, but corona looked good. the better of the 3….when he moved to the right wing he wasn’t as effective but seemed like the team was constantly trying to get the ball to the colombian striker that had two lead feet and wanted to do nothing more than draw another penalty…

  36. predicto says:

Onyewu looking aggressive against the Porto attack. Got burned once by hulk, but overall done well.

  37. Tom says:

Yeah, but it’s also a reserve side for Barcelona. He gets to play for the senior side on occasion.

  38. Tom says:

Looking forward to possible return of Torres and Barack Obama Jr. in the night game. Not a comment about your mother, Herc!

  39. 20 says:

only saw the replay, but what a crack!

  40. Wm. says:

    Danke, abc.

  41. Miguel says:

Jose Torres I thought was still injured… Or am I just missing something???

  42. JG13 says:

I understand that it isn’t easy to be the sole commentator for an entire match but the guy doing the Porto/Sporting match on ESPN3 really needs some help.

  43. Tom says:

He’s back. Not sure he’ll play, but he’s training with the team.

  44. chris says:

Well to be fair it was a lower Div. Championship and most arent Dallas residents

  45. Nick says:

Hey Ives, how about some new ads instead of trying to get me to bring home an Asian wife?

  46. My dude JFT is looking sharp in the first half. Nice passing and decission making. Had a very nice backheel to spring a player early on. Doesn’t look 90 minute fit yet but it’s his first game back..My only criticism for him would be that i wish he would take some shots from outside the box.

  47. One other observation is that he is very vocal and you can tell that the other players respect what he has to say. He dictates the pace very very well and most of the players differ decissions to him. I can see him becoming a captain of this team if he sticks around long enough.

  48. abc says:

Have you brought home an Asian wife yet? Otherwise it’s still relevant.

  49. Tom says:

    And he went 90 too. He’s back…

  50. marco says:

Gringo Torres with good distribution even playing in players where they should be. The #10 for Pachuca, wide on the left was a black hole for attacks, often complaining to others when he messed up.

Gooch was moving well, one time beating Hulk in 30 yard sprint for wide ball.

  51. Chase says:

Good Luck to the Latin Obama
