Vancouver Whitecaps striker Omar Salgado and Real Salt Lake midfielder Luis Gil are among the 36 players called in by head coach Tab Ramos to the U.S. Under-20 national team camp in Fort Lauderdale this week.
Molde fullback Sean Cunningham, Liverpool signee Villyan Bijev, Nuremberg midfielder Tyrone McCargo and SC Freiburg midfielder Caleb Stanko were also among the pros called into the week-long camp in Florida. Recent Los Angeles Galaxy signing Jose Villarreal is also in the group.

There are some real no names and some lousy names on this lists, there are of course goods and bass to that. Hopefully some of these guys can make a name for themselves.
The European season is still going strong, which means the EPL reserve league season is too.
I know the fact that he’s not on this roster means nothing, since he’s playing first team in the EPL, but it seems as decent a place as any to ask, has anyone heard if the US is talking to Blackburn’s Adam Henley, or if he’d have interest in playing for the US? This may have been covered elsewhere here; if so, I apologize, but he looked solid against Man U, as a 17 y/o left back.

A lot of really talented players at this camp. Good to see a lot of Mexican-American/Latino-American talent on this roster. Santos and Tigres in Mexico are represented well. Villyan Bijev is a beast can’t wait to see this guy in the senior National team squad one day. Hmm, a little interesting Pelosi isn’t with this camp, but Liverpools academy might have not let him go. So excited for the future of the U.S> program. U-20′s look to be heading in the right direction with some very talnted players, the U-23′s look to be loaded with talented players, and the U-17′s have started their campaign in really hot form, and have some exceptionally talented players. Heres to seeing a more attacked minded U.S. program at all levles including the senior team in 2012 and beyond.
He seeems entreched in the Wales program, but who knows he may choose the U.S. in the future.

Seems there’s at least one — Tyrone McCargo from Nurnberg. Question — was he at the stadion, when the USA met Ghana in Nurnberg? If he was, I’m cool with him.
At risk of sounding really dumb: Has there always been this many camps or has USSF stepped this up since JK has been around?

Generally the U-20′s and the USMNT senior squad have January camps every year. The Olympics are around the corner and that is why the U-23′s are holding camps every month heading into Olympic qualifying.
If you don’t see the tie in, you have a lot to learn about the youth development system. Fish has everything to do with it.

It would be great if Salgado got more playing time this year, he looked really dangerous in the GA tour. Also anyone know how Villyan Bijev is doing at fortuna?
Something tells me the senior team is going to see a lost more hispanic players make the roster. Bueno.

Yeah, I’m hoping Salgado gets more playing time this year too. It will be interesting to see how Rennie manages the strikers. Salgado currently sits behind Hassli, Camillo, and Long Tan. And Attiba Harris will be back this year.
There’s still a good possibility that Camillo gets moved before the season starts because he is unhappy with his contract.
Either way, Salgado needs more playing time.

The biggest omissions or absenses are Marc Pelosi (Liverpool), Cody Cropper (Goalie that plays in Ipswich), Will Packwood (D from Birmingham), Carlos Martinez (Forward in Energie Cottbus), Matthew Dunn (who just signed with a team in Serbia)…all these I will take over some of the ‘college players’…

Does anybody know what is going on with Alejandro Guido? Have not heard anything about him since the U17 World Cup last year. Was hoping to see him in this camp.

Salgado is the longest of long shots to even make qualifying, much less the actual Olympic team (18 roster spots with around half a dozen forwards ahead of him).
Gil should still be in the midfield picture, at least for qualifying, imo.

Shocked to see no Chicago people(besides one Northwestern guy who doesn’t really count)-I was always under the impression it was a pretty good soccer hotspot. Fire have solid youth academy, good youth teams like Sockers FC and the Magic, and generally speaking, good demographics for good soccer players. Yet, on this roster and various u23/u17 rosters recently, no Chicago people. I wonder why.

Congrats to Komora for getting a U-20 call up. He really impressed at the U-17 World Cup, but I’m not sure if that was due to his physicality or not (an advantage that would be eliminated at the U-20 level).
Why why why? You have absolutely no idea if these players are better than the kids in college, you just know they signed a contract. I know of dozens of kids who had the opportunity to play abroad but did not. It’s a huge life change and goes counter to a lot of long held beliefs about getting an education. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the best kids automatically go to Europe.

I’ve been noticing that too. The winters may be hurting development. Some regions emphasize different sports. For example, in the past 10-20 years Chicago has probably produced the best basketball talent of any of the major US cities.

Just because the rules are different doesn’t mean the players are worse… Yes the professional environment is better than the college one, but the players deserve chances. Have you seen them play? Do you know that they aren’t as good as some of our newly signed professional youngsters?

As a Railhawk fan I can tell you that Rennie likes to switch up his lineups and will use every player on his bench. He also loves to play younger players so I would expect Salgado to get a good run of playing time.
