Report: Sounders signing Danish winger

SEA_Primary_COL

The Seattle Sounders appear to be hitting the international market during transfer season yet again.

After officially announcing the acquisition of Swedish right back Adam Johannson on Thursday, the Sounders are reportedly close to signing Danish winger Christian Sivebaek, a player general manager Adrian Hanauer told the Seattle Times that the Sounders are "very interested" in acquiring.

According to reports out of Denmark, Sivebaek, a 23-year-old former Denmark youth international and current player for FC Midtjylland, is on his way to Seattle, where he is slated for a place in the midfield. The prospective move would continue Seattle's foray into Scandinavia, where it has signed players such as past Sounders Freddie Ljungberg and Erik Friberg and now Johannson.

The move for Sivebaek would be the third international signing this offseason for Seattle after the club signed Austrian goalkeeper Michael Gspurning.

What do you think about the Sounders' recent moves? Think the club is taking the right steps this offseason? What other positions do you think the team needs to address heading into 2012?

    Mmmmmmm…… Danish

  2. Jake says:

Gotta love it if you are a Sounders fan or even just a MLS fan. These signings make the Sounders very deep which will help in the CCL. this league will be made much better by teams going to get depth and not just a just an occasional DP and a SuperDraft prayer.

  3. Paul says:

Smart. Young players with upside. Frankly it makes a load of sense.

  4. Advocate says:

Loving the progress as a diehard Sounders supporter. If they can address the gap in CM left by Friberg’s departure, I am 100% satisfied with this offseason. We’ve upgraded our GK and RB positions, and look poised to strengthen an already league best midfield. If some of our injured players get healthy, this team should be able to compete for the Supporters Shield in my opinion, especially if Montero can avoid his hot/cold streaks as he matures.

  5. BigWave says:

    They should be renamed the

    Ballard Sounders.

  6. JJ says:

    Haha, love it!

  7. Kasey says:

Taco tweet fever has them lining up to play for SSFC

  8. SWED says:

Sounds like Zakuani might not be back to form for quite some time, which makes the signing of this Dane that much better for the Sounders. They need forward help though. After Montero, the others are all situational subs at best.

  9. fischy says:

I think Seattle’s secret is out. The city will be overrun with Europeans soon. Socialism to follow.

  10. Eurosnob says:

It looks like MLS is starting to poach players from Scandinavian leagues. It used to be the other way round. It shows the progress that the league has achieved.

  11. Cairo says:

I think there’s room for a stadium at the Loyal Heights playfield. Then I could walk to the games! Joking aside, it’s not a coincidence that the Sounders are going for Scandinavians-one of the oldest immigrant groups in the Seattle area. Good marketing, and perhaps Seattle is an easier sell for these Scandinavian players.
Sounders still need a top class striker to challenge the Galazy, but there’s no money for it unless they jettison Fernandez, which isn’t going to happen. They are going to be hoping for a bounce back from Zakuani and O’Brian White.

  12. XPK says:

Awaiting Zimmerman’s tweet rant about this latest development in MLS recruiting.

  13. Camjam says:

I’m almost wondering if they’re setting up to use Rosales more centrally this year. If i’m not mistaken (I could be) he has played centrally in the past. And as wingers age (not saying he’s old, but he is over thirty)I’ve often noticed they move to CM often.

  14. Blacksmith says:

Expect the Sounders to continue to deploy a dynamic midfield where the wings and forwards make diagonal runs and fluidly change positions. Mauro will see a great deal of time on the RW due to his crossing ability from there. More likely to see Flaco move into the middle when Zak begins to regain his form.

I fully expect Christian to see time as a back up to Rosales on RW and to Johannson at RB.

The Sounders are doing a good job of upgrading their overall depth and balance and have set themselves up well for the coming combines, draft and international trade window. They have already addressed most of their pressing needs and now can look for a final special deal or two. I fully expect them to be active traders relative to the Draft. They don’t need multiple picks, since their roster is already almost full.

  15. JJ says:

That’s a great point. Trade up for Rowe!

  16. Ernie says:

This guy is pretty much a benchwarmer in the danish league though.

  17. Blacksmith says:

Rowe has a great local connection, but someone like Wenger (a big reach) or Hoffman may fit the Sounders needs better. As much as I would like to see the Sounders try for Wenger, I think that someone like Hoffman is a more likely trade target.

The Sounders could use a bit of insurance at forward and a Gen Add player like Hoffman might fit the bill.

  18. WileyJ says:

This is good. F.O. is having a great off season so far. SSFC!!!

  19. Steve says:

Not many 23 year olds are grizzzled veterans…Good to see America bringing in young talent. He would be coming if he didn’t have upside. It is the right fit of players that make a team.

  20. Tim says:

How many wingers do they need?

For years, the glaring need has been that #9 Striker.

  21. T Mcgee says:

The Sounders still lack size in central defense and up top

  22. Rodney says:

Still no center back depth or a guy that can consistently hold the ball up at forward. O’ Brian White is Allan Gordon 2.0.

  23. gigi says:

will drew Carey be the dictator? More importantly……..what will happen to the price is right?

  24. gigi says:

word is, he no longer eats sweedish fish or dansih muffins.

  25. Rusky says:

and they obviously need only 1 good centre back

  26. Dizzo says:

So would that be Parke? Or Hurtado? Or Ianni? They’re all pretty good.

  27. g? says:

the price will be set by the state.

admittedly, it doesn’t have the same ring

  28. Sati says:

Hurtado is excellent, but when he goes down, the defense becomes horrendous. Parke and Ianni are average journeyman. They need an Omar Gonzalez sized guy to go with these 3 midgets.

  29. Javier says:

Montero is top class….They just need a guy for him to play off and combine with.

  30. Clayton says:

Does Sounders’ management have some connection to Scandinavia?

  31. Paul says:

still need a big forward. I think they will keep both Zakuani and White on IR for the first 6 weeks to bring them back slowly in mid april/early may.
