Earthquakes sign Honduran Bernardez

The San Jose Earthquakes took a step toward fortifying their back line Wednesday by agreeing to a deal with Honduran centerback Victor Bernardez.

Bernardez, 29, has 52 caps for Honduras. He started in all of Honduras' games during this past summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup and was also a member of the country's World Cup team in 2010. He was most recently property of Anderlecht for the last three years, but he was on loan during 2011 with Lierse in Belgium and Indios in Mexico.

The 6-foot-2 Bernardez is the second Honduran international to join San Jose this offseason after the club traded for FC Dallas' Marvin Chavez a couple of weeks ago. He joins a defensive corps that includes the likes of Ike Opara, Nana Attakora, Steve Beitashour, Tim Ward and Jason Hernandez, and he fills the void left behind by Bobby Burling, who was scooped up by Montreal in the expansion draft.

What do you think of the signing? Think San Jose is headed in the right direction?

  1. Felix says:

I remember being impressed with him during this past Gold Cup, physical centerback, with good enough pace and positional sense, if I recall he has a big leg on him, and can hit a nasty shot as well. If he stays healthy and commits he should do well.

  2. Indigo Montoya says:

As an ‘Quakes supporter, I like this. If only Opara could stay healthy.

    …and build that stadium!!!

  3. Black Guy says:

I bet you any money this guy gets injured this season.

  4. Interesting post, I am so glad that I have visited your site. Really useful information!

  5. David St. Hubbins says:

Very nice addition by los earthquakes. He played the full 90 in Honduras’ 0-0 draw with Switzerland in the 2010 WC and he played in the scoreless first half of the 2011 gold cup semifinal against Mexico. 29 years old so still some mileage left on his legs.

  6. nico says:

Talented and intelligent player. He trimmed down while in Belgium, so he is much more mobile than he was in his early days. Great free kicks.

  7. Indigo Montoya says:

Are the rumors that Nigel Tufnel has moved to Tibet and become a Monk true?

  8. chris says:

    Who are the earthquakes?

    Things are on the up!

  15. fischy says:

I’m guessing that the rumor was based in fact. And, I’m guessing the front office didn’t get a discovery claim in soon enough. The MLS-rumors reports suggested there was a discovery claim question. Sounds reasonable. San Jose had the worse record, so their claim stood. But, I wonder if DC might have gotten him by acting sooner….Don’t know the particulars. Just wondering. I doubt we’ll ever know.

  16. Big Ben says:

pfft… this guy was playing the the Mexican 2nd division. From what Ives has stated before, the Mexican league sucks in defending which means this guy must really be bad. Terrible pick up by the earthquakes.

  17. Bart says:

    Players…..not leagues people

  18. Dan says:

Where have you been for the last 30 years, Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  19. Grinder says:

They need a DP centerpiece for that new stadium. San Jose is an attractive place to play football.
