RSL leave Rimando, Saborio home ahead of U.S. Open Cup clash with FC Dallas

Real Salt Lake handed FC Dallas a 2-0 defeat in MLS play this past weekend, but will have a weakened squad try to knock off Dallas in U.S. Open Cup action Tuesday.

According to Salt Lake Tribune, RSL has left starting goalkeeper Nick Rimando and striker Alvaro Saborio home ahead of the quarterfinal clash at Pizza Hut Park. Rimando suffered a slight ankle injury in Saturday's match while Saborio appears to be facing punishment for his behavior after being substituted in Saturday's match.

Kyle Reynish will start in goal for Real Salt Lake, while it remains unclear who will get the call at forward against a Dallas side that is very tough to score on at home.

What do you think of this development? Think RSL can win in Dallas without Rimando and Saborio? See FC Dallas winning the rematch?

Well, it’s pretty clear that Hyndman was prioritizing the Open Cup match with his player management, especially with his leaving Daniel Hernandez at home, while Kreis prioritized the MLS match.

  2. Rev up those Revs says:

I just want RSL back in the CCL

  3. Galaxy says:

    +1

  4. Jeremy says:

I’m rooting for Dallas in this one. Hopefully they will be making their way to Seattle on August 30th.

  5. Idaho Brian says:

Espindola seems healthy again, so a pairing up top of Espindola and Gil or Alexandre will be fine. It would be great if Paulo Jr. was finally healthy enough to come off the bench. It should be a great game.

  6. Goob says:

Not really clear that’s the case.

Dallas has 9 games in 29 days including last Saturdays RSL game. Upcoming games include MLS, CCL and Tuesday’s USOC match.

Tuesday’s game could be least on the list considering Dallas is already in this years CCL and seems to have a good chance of earning a spot via SS or playoffs.

  7. boosted335 says:

Should be a very good game. Dallas doesnt need the win but I expect them to answer back after saturdays loss.

  8. Mikey says:

Kreis wants back in to CCL play. Easiest route to get there is Open Cup, and for most teams this competition flies under the radar.

  9. Neruda says:

RSL can win this one without key players if Dallas sits a few of their starters also. Hoping Gil scores in this one. I think Dallas will concede a lot on player selection putting higher priority on upcoming matches.

  10. Eric says:

I dont think thats the case at all, Kreis has repeatedly said that the USOC is a priority as its the quickest route back to the CCL. Hyndman has A LOT to juggle over the next several weeks, including this game, league games, CCL, etc. If anything I would think the USOC is near the bottom of FCD’s priorities. Hyndman left Hernandez at home because of an injury, he even stated as much before the game.

  11. Powderhorn Pops says:

What sucks is that this game isn’t taking place in the final or even the semi-finals of USOC

  12. Rev up those Revs says:

Yeah, the Western half of the bracket is stacked like Kate Upton. The Eastern half is like one of the non-Kim Kardashians.

Getting back into the CCL by playing and winning a match in the Temperatures of Frisco are in no way easy, add to this the fact that RSL has never beaten Dallas in Frisco and I think it can be agreed that tomorrow’s match will not be easy. One thing RSL has going for it is that Dallas does have alot of matches coming up and throwing their top line-up at this match may not be the best move for Dallas.

I think RSL wants this one more and will get the win and move on.

  14. Bbatman04 says:

I don’t think anything was pretty clear. Hyndman brought a full squad to The RioT. Hernandez stayed home hurt thats all there is to it. RSL was also without Borchers. Both Lineups suffered due to injuries. Man up already. I really respect FCD more than any other MLS team dont ruin that for all us RSL fans by giving lame excuses. As we all know excuses are like butt holes, everybody has one and they all STINK.

  15. Charles says:

Oh yeah, Seattle plays LA too.

Top four teams in MLS standings in the West.

    Should be great games.

I want Dallas to win, as Salt Lake out bid the Sounders. Note to Sounders, have the semis at ex-QWest next year.
