The 2011 MLS All-Star Game kicks off tonight, with the MLS All-Stars taking on English Premier League champions Manchester United at Red Bull Arena (8:30pm, ESPN).

The MLS All-Stars will be looking for a measure of revenge after last year's 5-2 MLS All-Star Game loss, though this year's squad is a stronger one than the 2010 edition. Thierry Henry, David Beckham and Faryd Mondragon are just some of the standouts bolsterig this year's All-Star Team.

SBI will be providing commentary on tonight's match so please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Tonight's commentary is after the jump):

  1. Backheel says:

    ESPN2, I believe.

  2. chris says:

    Man I need a pivotrim

  3. USA Fan says:

Funny how the MLS goon commentators dont mention the absence of the face Donovan, the face of American soccer. They are all over the absence of Chicharito. Both squads have a key man missing

  4. Devherr says:

Red bull arena looks intimidating as hell.

  5. Wilbur says:

True , but for once I agree with Lalas about how other All Star games are farces (no defense at al in NFL and NBA). Baseball is still interesting because they play for home field.

  6. chupacabra says:

Can’t believe ESC dragged out their lame tifo a second time. What the hell are those red and white cards supposed to look like? A used panty liner?

  7. Andy says:

All Star Game against United, and they still can’t fill RBA?

Also…are the ESPN staff Liverpool supporters? Just wondering what w/ the “Man U”…

  8. MVP says:

Classless Man U fans booing Henry in his own stadium….I hope he scores

  9. Herbert says:

some US TV station is bitter

  10. John W says:

best moment of the match. Commentator says that you could sell RBA 3 times over. In the background you see 2 sections (good seats) with 5-6 rows completely empty.

  11. Rob says:

Alonso….what about Landon and Omar, ESPN dorks

  12. Rick says:

Ream blowing it again…what has happened to this kid???

  13. Mick says:

All Star jerseys would be class if not for the Seattle Bra Straps

  14. MJ says:

Convey doesnt deserve to be here…sorry

  15. Renster says:

if not for injury, Ricketts would be in goal

  16. jon says:

I love you Davis…. Go dynamo

  17. francois says:

I really can’t stand Wayne Rooney. It’s a friendly and he keeps bitching at the ref for every little thing.

  18. beachbum says:

the All Stars are fine in attack and possession, but defensively what you’d expect with the team on the field

a MLS goal before half would be nice

  19. Dank says:

Olave never would have gotten shredded like Cameron was right there.

  20. beachbum says:

great finish and build up, horrible defending however. expected with this lineup

  21. chupacabra says:

Somewhere in the Bronx, a busload of Chinese tourists are getting rolled.

  22. Mick says:

Love Franklin for LA, but all-star quality?

  23. USA Guy says:

Manchester is about to get a taste of their own medicine when they pull their starters…Look for MLS to come back strong in this one

Final Score Prediction: MLS:4 MAN: 3

  24. marco says:

If Convey and Franklin stay in, the score will soon double. I never understood the Franklin selection. I thought they rip him apart. If I was Alex I’d put Nani or Young on him at the start.

  25. Paul says:

ESPN clowns talking about Brad Davis vs David Beckham….please.

  26. Javier says:

Alex is doing pretty well so far. Hans needs to step it up with his tactics.

  27. marco says:

Lalas sounds clueless. He’s on a David Beckham is the problem monologue. Becks is playing well. I like that he’s all over the field. He shouldn’t be their DM. All the MLS sides had better first halves than the All-stars. With Olave out and two outclassed FB’s this might top 5 goals quickly.

  28. Tyler says:

He can’t get the most important part of his game into form without practicing it preseason, right?

  29. Francois says:

    That was Franklin man.

  30. T Bone says:

    +1

  31. Larry Y says:

Beckham pretty defenseless as holding midfielder. Beckerman might have tracked Anderson’s run (maybe).

Also Park received the ball with way too much space.

  32. jon says:

Because of his cross…. Which is just as good

  33. Andrea C. says:

Ignorance, even Ives at times refers to Man Utd as that.

  34. Andrea C. says:

I think the Ives’ man love got to him.

  35. Mario says:

Cameron was swatted away like a fly…he hasnt played Center Back all year! Poor defending by the AS

  36. chupacabra says:

It’s a pity MLS didn’t choose a coach who has actually won a match in the last few months. I guess they were only willing to spring for PATH train fare instead of a few nights in a Holiday Inn Express.

  37. Rex says:

or players from the best teams…Labrocca??? Cmon

  38. Redmond says:

No urgency in attack for MLS, what is this passback crap?????

  39. chupacabra says:

The Chivas stink is fouling up the pitch.

  40. Becks says:

Beckham is in a class all his own. He is phenomenal.

  41. Fred Garvin says:

    turn down the crowd mike

    #dirge

  42. TH says:

Cameron weak… shoulder charge or pancake block wow is he soft. Nice deflection too.

  43. beachbum says:

    looking like a seer

    +1

  44. Emerald_City_Jason says:

It’s not just ignorance, it’s recognizing how absurd y’all are being. You guys sound like members of the Greek system taking offense to the use of “frat,” or OSU folks who insist you’re not being respectful unless you say/write “The” Ohio State University.

  45. Brent McD says:

Why does MLS play EPL teams in an All-Star game? This is a complete embarrassment. Bush League

  46. GSScasual says:

Im pretty sure youre just one of these idiots who has something to say about ANY red bull player… what has he done wrong in this match… god, your jealousy/envy is obvious…. i hope you fall down the stairs.

  47. Emerald_City_Jason says:

4-0 in the 70th minute. Suddenly the Sounders C-side doesn’t look so bad for giving up 6.

  48. Brent McD says:

At least we haven’t seen Cory Arse yet. Talk about a questionable selection!

  49. Brent McD says:

I prefer to call then ManUre

  50. Jim says:

All the SBI comment whores who constantly yell “Eurosnob!” have been shut the ef up tonight. Honestly, a 2nd division english squad would have put up more of a fight tonight. Embarassing.

  51. beachbum says:

Cummings got worked in the first half on the MLS right flank. that was the formation, and he was exposed out there. Bravo did much better on the left flank digging in more defensively

  52. Beuhler, Beuhler...? says:

It’s easier to find Waldo than trying to find Wando tonight…

  53. Union says:

+1. Also love how Backe hasn’t subbed in Agudelo until now, as if to prove a counterpoint to the MLS. Game was a joke. If the MLS keeps on overhyping this kind of stuff, only to dramatically underperform, they aren’t doing themselves any good as they go after this pipe dream of making the MLS a top league in the world. At least they have some more shallow BS lined up (Keller).

  54. Emerald_City_Jason says:

Why exactly has anybody been “shut up”?

  55. Union says:

God. This entire affair is just embarrassing. They have the commentators making excuses for the league and trying to add dramatic effect to this disaster. I look forward to Ives telling all of us “eurosnobs” that we don’t know what we’re talking about. And going on to make ridiculous excuses as per usual.

  56. Fred Garvin says:

I luv it how Harkes makes everyone’s skin crawl

  57. dan says:

I think this MU team is better prepared for the EPL season than last years team! Besides Barca, Real, Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern, and a few other teams, I don’t think too many teams can keep up with MU… I don’t think MLS should feel embarrassed. MU is just that much better than anything MLS has to offer…. $$2.5 million/team vs. $$1.3 billion/team… who do you think is going to win?!?!?!

If anything, it shows the amount of technical (financial) skill that MLS still needs to achieve to compete at the world stage.

MU just made a boat-load of $$ on this US trip!!!

  58. KC says:

Amazing how many people travel all the way from England to see their team play.

  59. Ivan says:

What a pointless pointless game…why does MLS have to copy NBA, MLB, etc.

How can I get excited about this league? Conferences, playoffs, Jabulani, no promo/relegation…Donnie Garber, please go!

  60. GSScasual says:

Glory hunting, rubes who couldnt name 3 people on the club… I dont care if you are free to like whoever you want… at least have SOME sort of connection to the team other than liking the color red, or having so little confidence, you need to support a winning team…. F*** em, thanks for the cash, now piss off.

  61. marco says:

Thank God it’s over. The worst of the MLS games. Becks was the only MLS player with professional skills today. MLS/Garber/Media say so what, this is entertainment, not for me. The score doesn’t bother me, the inability to play with a decent level of proficiency doesn’t turn me on.
Perhaps United against Chelsea for the next AllStar game.

  62. Bob says:

    manUre

  63. Tempura says:

nope…even effort by Man U. Credit has to go to Alex

  64. James says:

good cross…but not the same quality… ever

  65. JJ says:

hes a d-mid out of position. With all the good defenders that MLA has…a joke

  66. Brent McD says:

ManU players not celebrating, basically just laughing at the whole experience. How does this improve American soccer, other than another big sellout? Maybe just answered my own question. I won’t be watching next year.

All-Star Game has become a farce. Go back to East vs. West

  67. Javier says:

They always beat the EPL teams except for Man U…Teams not leagues eurosnob!

  68. hogatroge says:

Haha… I assume a lot of the MUFC fans are ex-pats, 1st generation Americans or bandwagoners who had “revelatory study abroad experiences” back in college

  69. Mitch says:

MLS All Star effort has nothing to do with annoying eurosnobs

  70. hogatroge says:

This game can’t possibly have made more money than last year, and we get an even more embarrassing result to boot.

  71. salim says:

We need to stop these exhibition games, MLS All Stars. It looks really bad for the league. We need to concentrate on the season and win CONCACAF CUPS.

  72. Cooper says:

And Max Bretas with his usual eurodouchy comments

  73. marco says:

Cameron has to initiate the shoulder charge, just slow of mind, to let Berba do it.

  74. FulhamNick says:

Let the excuses flow! I’m sure our hard hitting media and core of sympathizers (ex-players) will really blast this and the rest of the MLS performances this summer. Hooray mediocrity!

  75. Tim says:

MLS needs to avoid scheduling one of the Top 3, beacuse they are virtually unbetable by any team outside of them. (Madrid, Barca, Man U). MLS All STars can beat any other club team.

  76. Union says:

How about no all star games?

  77. Union says:

    + 1,000,000

  78. marco says:

I have a strange feeling the soccer media is going to spin this to back MLS decision, how sad. Yes fans are entertained by United, but they also want some level of competition and proficiency. This format does not work.

  79. Emerald_City_Jason says:

MLS sides did fine until the last two years. No need for all the hand-wringing.

  80. shao2007 says:

These MLS players DO NOT REGULARLY play on the same team or train together.
Almost all of the goals Man U scored were caused by the fact that lapses occurred by guys that don’t play together and don’t have an understanding of what their teammate will or will not do on specific plays.

A powerhouse side like Man U will always pounce on every mistake and take advantage.

MLS still has miles to go, but, I was very happy to see we played kinda the sexy way.

(Too bad MLS is lacking quality “Finishers” just like the national team).

  81. M Dog says:

Yes, but at least manage to get one goal in your own event. The opposition must change. Chicharito is a great draw, but 2 years in a row is silly. After drawing such a big crowd for Real Madrid, LA scheduled them again and it also backfired. Greed is not good…lol.

And there were some quality MLS finishers that didn’t play in this one. It would have been fun to see a guy like Hassli. Donovan, Davies, Shea, Casey. Quality playmakers like Morales and Ferreira also.

  82. Adam M. says:

Football is not a sport where you can throw a bunch of guys together at the last minute, no matter how good they are, and hope to get a good result against a world class side. Lest anyone forget, this similar Manchester United side was obliterated by Barcelona in the Champions League final and they were an actual team made up of superstars that played together all year. This game was fun in many ways, but MLS needs to re-think the idea of bringing in a real team. Maybe pull a Euro All-Star team together from the various World Football Challenge teams? Or maybe go up against the US National team? As for the game, it should serve as a reminder of the massive gulf in individual talent between the better players around the world and what passes off as MLS All-Stars. On the other hand, Beckham looked like he could play for Man Utd right now.

  83. JrDosSantos says:

How is the MLS copying NBA or MLB? How does ANY of them copy one another?

NBA = all NBA players one conference vs the other for nothing

MLB = all MLB players one league vs the other for something

MLS = MLS players vs a club team

  84. Emerald_City_Jason says:

I dunno, they’ve played poorly twice against Man U. No shame in that. They’ve held their own against other “real” teams from Europe in the past. I think much ado is being made of nothing in a lot of circles tonight.

  85. Brent McD. says:

To be fair, Ashe did not look half bad, and against Nani no less. Praise where praise is due.

  86. Brent McD. says:

I drove two hours each way last Saturday night to see my beloved Dynamo get thumped by Chivas USA, so yeah I’m a eurosnob. Why would I comment on this thread if I was a so-called “euro-snob”? Can we just put that term to rest already?
