Eight members of the Mexican national team set to play in Copa America have been sent home after a scandal involving the players bringing prostitutes to their hotel rooms.
The eight players, one of which was Barcelona defender Jonathan Dos Santos, were accused of bringing prostitutes into their hotel in Quito, Ecuador. The incident came to light after several players reported having items stolen from their hotel rooms, only have hotel security footage show the players letting in the prostitutes, as well as some would-be robbers.
Israel Jimenez, Nestor Vidrio, dos Santos, Marco Fabian, Jorge Hernandez, Javier Cortes, David Cabrera and Nestor Calderon were the eight players, all of which have been suspended from the national team for six months. They have been replaced on the roster by the following eight players: Kristian Alvarez, Antonio Gallardo, Edgar Pacheco, Alan Pulido, Emilio Orrantia, Ulises Davila, Diego de Buen and Oswaldo Alanis.

How come you never hear about this stuff with women’s teams?
Presumably a violation of team rules to have any women (let alone prostitutes) in their rooms while they are in camp with the national team. So the rules a federation imposes on its players while in camp has nothing to do with what is commonplace in American professional sports.
If that turns out to be the case, let’s see if CONMEBOL responds as harshly as they did to the US fielding a weak team in the Copa 4 years ago.

Can someone please explain to me why the CONMEBOL threatens to never invite the United States to Copa America again because we sent a 2nd tier team and Mexico gets a pass. All Football in the Western Hemisphere is a bunch of hypocrites.
because Mexico equals money for Conmebol. Concacaf agreed to let them play along with Costa Rica but only with their U-22 teams. That is also why Mexico stays in Libertadores, Conmebol can’t afford to lose Mexico.
Advertising by Mexican companies and the viewership Mexico’s national team provides in Mexico and US make up a huge portion of Copa America’s revenues.

Didn’t the Tijuana team get promoted to the Mexican 1st league this year. The last time I was in TJ, about a year ago we cruised through the Zona Norte (the redlight district), my friend could have SWORN he saw Dos Santos and another mexican player getting out of a car next to the Hong Kong Club. We razzed him about this all the way home. Turns out he was probably right!!

The hotel has a reputation to defend as well. They are going to look after their interests, and if the players have basically accused the hotel of having lax security, guess what? Exactly….Mexico conceivably would have brought more mixed (Veteran Vs. Youth) team to begin with but the decision came from CONCACAF that they could only play with their U23/Olympic style rules allowing five overrage players….Very disappointing, I was looking forward to seeing guys like Jona, Calderon, and Fabian play in this tournament.
