If the New York Red Bulls are to return to their winning ways, they'll have to do so without their captain.

Thierry Henry did not travel with the team to Houston, the team announced via its official Twitter feed. Henry, who is tied for third in the league with five goals, had been bothered by swelling in his right knee and will be rested this weekend.

Luke Rodgers and Juan Agudelo figure to start up top for the Red Bulls at Robertson Stadium in a rematch of a 1-1 draw between the two teams that took place on April 2.

Here are a couple of other notes from around MLS ahead of this weekend's action:

GALAXY SIGNS DAVIES

The Los Angeles Galaxy is hedging its bets that Kyle Davies can stay healthy and reach his potential.

The club signed the former United States Under-20 defender and captain on Friday just weeks after he was waived by FC Dallas.

Davies, 22, was claimed off waivers by the Galaxy the day after he was cut but officially signed with the team and was added to the roster on Friday. He started FC Dallas' opening game last season but broke his arm and missed almost six months before injuring his ankle and missing the postseason.

BECKHAM, FREI TAKE WEEKLY GOAL, SAVE HONORS

David Beckham's free kick against Sporting Kansas City and Stefan Frei's save against the Chicago Fire both turned out to be award-winning plays.

Beckham's trademark free kick from about 25 yards was the icing on L.A.'s 4-1 victory, while Frei's save denied Chicago's Daniel Paladini of a would-be game-winner in their 2-2 draw.

Here's video of Beckham's goal and Frei's save.

How do you think Henry's injury affects the NY-HOU match? Think Davies will blossom in Los Angeles? Do you think Beckham and Frei were deserved winners?

  1. Jack says:

FC Dallas waived this guy why?

  2. Gary N. says:

Beckham’s goal?? Cmon, Stephenson’s goal was tremendous and if you wanted a freekick, Pappa’s was better.

  3. Paul says:

At least Henry’s not missing a game to go to play in an exhibition somewhere in England . . .

  4. Adrian says:

    Seriously?

Beckham’s goal was a thing of beauty.

  5. JL says:

Because he is never available to play due to some sort of injury. I think in the 3 or 4 years he was around, he was available for less than 25% of games.

  6. Adrian says:

    Greg Oden of MLS.

  7. drew says:

get used to it, Beckham hating is getting as widespread as BB hating on these pages.

  8. nam says:

Even Bob Bradley agrees that Pappa’s freekick was better.

  9. I have to agree that Pappa’s was better. Off the crossbar! Not to mention it sparked Chicago’s come from behind draw. Marco has a wicked left foot.

  10. JoeW says:

I don’t like seeing anyone injured but I’m glad to see Agudelo get minutes. He needs to be playing. This is one of those rare cases where a transfer out of MLS might result in MORE playing time.

  11. Sean says:

Beckham’s goal was world class. His Going England to play at his best friends testamonial has as much to do with getting seen by the England Coach.

  12. Brian says:

Beckham’s was better. Longer distance. Much tougher angle.

BTW though how retarded is the Red Bulls play by play guy to think that Justin Braun is Jorge Flores (see Goals of the week nominees video).

  13. Brian says:

Helluva save by Frei. Talk about quick reflexes and good hand speed

  14. Powderhorn Pops says:

Now off the crossbar is better than not hitting crossbar. Hitting the crossbar is exactly the reason why Beckham’s was better. He was actually more on target and needed no assistance from the woodwork. It’s like saying a free throw that clanks off the rim is better than one that gets nothing but net. The logic fails me.

  15. CJ in OC says:

I agree with you on both points.

  16. aps says:

So u think Capello is going to be evaluating guys based on a testimonial match where guys won’t even be playing hard?

  17. A wise man once says:

    -1 :(

  18. A wise man once says:

Wish they’d say Galaxy signed KYLE Davies. I freaked when I read the headlines, thought they’d signed Charlie Davies!

  19. Rob says:

According to who? Jesus people on this site are way too funny. God forbid an 18 year old gets taken under one of the best modern day strikers ever wings. His development is way more important for him to be successful anywhere he goes, and if that means he is a super-sub on a good red bulls team then so be it.

  20. Rob says:

I am glad Henry is taking this game off. Better to be 100% then risk further injury. Look what a few games rest did for Donovan.

  21. What? That is just crazy talk. Off the woodwork is always better. The award isn’t given for accuracy. Hitting the woodwork makes it that much more dramatic because it could have hit and gone out. Just like Landon’s penalty against Ghana.

  22. Javier says:

Galaxy should be looking for offense not defense…Typical Arena

  23. Benny Dargle says:

Leonardo is out for the season with an injury, Alvarado (former UCLA CB) is out for the season with an injury, Berhalter is only just now returning from an injury and is still not fit to play a full game, and they have been using Jovan Kirovski at center fullback in reserve games. That sounds like good justification for picking up a young center back and they must be satisfied that he is fully recovered from injury.

  24. dan says:

for half a minute i thought it was Charlie Davies. boy the Galaxy would’ve been unstoppable

  25. PetedeLA says:

Thank you. If he had just said it once I could have looked the other way.

  26. Jeremy says:

I’m pretty sure Jesus is not concerned about Agudelo’s playing time and would like to be left out of your arguments. Ditto with God. Since they have no interest, please don’t use their names in vain.

  27. Coop says:

Shouldn’t you have been raptured, Jeremy?
