Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

Oguchi Onyewu will hope to have fully recovered from the hip injury picked up against Argentina, as FC Twente has a colossal match this weekend.

Currently trailing PSV Eindhoven by one point for the top spot in the Eredivisie, Twente has its best chance to unseat the first place team as the two square off in one of Saturday's bigger matches. If Onyewu is deemed fit, and Onyewu told SBI that he is hopeful that he'll be ready, he could earn the start.

The top American goalkeepers in Europe square off this weekend as Tim Howard and Everton takes on Brad Friedel and Aston Villa in a match both teams need to move further away from the relegation zone.

Always a great sign that the weekend is finally close when the Americans Abroad preview comes out.

There is a great segment on Clint Dempsey in the Premier League magazine/preview show (on FSC). It is always interesting to see Yanks through the eyes of the domestic UK/European press.

  2. Jim says:

Didnt Chandler get a red card in his last club game? No way he’s playing this weekend

  3. chris says:

    link?

  4. Don Pelayo says:

That’s probably why it says (serving a red card suspension). My apologies if that was edited after your comment.

  5. David says:

No link, caught it last night

  6. donttreadonme says:

So something I thought about as I watched the replay of US/Argentina…Spector has done so well for West Ham…is it translating to the pitch for the Nats? He seemed to handle the pressure of (I think) Rojo fairly well – I was happy with it. Not impressed quite, and I think he needs to work on getting some long balls up but still…I like him.

  7. soccerroo says:

looking forward to Hannover 96 vs Borussia Dortmund. it should be a really good game and Hopefully Cherundelo is healty enough to play.

  8. Brian says:

I’m sure he’s fine. I mean he had a week to rest.

  9. Supsam says:

Marcus Tracy and Chris Rolfe….forgot about those guys. Come back home!

  10. c00kiem0nster says:

he’ll be on the team for the nats for a while because of being able to play cover at multiple positions

he’s becoming pretty solid, i like him a lot more now than I used to, he used to be very shaky at times, he still is but he seems to improve over time and seems a little more consistent

How many of you feel like you got just what you wanted for christmas when you look at lists like this? I know it’s been said before, but the list of Americans playing abroad is beyond amazing. Look at all of them. Yeah, many are playing in second and third divisions. But I’m sure if this list looked like the Yanks Abroad list did 10-15 years ago, many of our roster that played Argentina wouldn’t be playing in Sam’s Army red.

When I used to walk ten miles in the snow uphill both ways to school every day, before the Big Bang (or it’s US soccer equivalent- WC94 and it’s run-up), finding out how our pioneers in Europe (Mexico wouldn’t put a gringo on one of their teams to save it’s soul) was pret’ near impossible, by cracky.

And who should we thank for our bounty? USSF? MLS? Cable TV? Claudio Reyna? John O’Brian (phhah! he was later anyway. When’s he coming back?)

The nurse is here with my meds. He likes to make me feel better by telling me about the
time he gave that Brazilian who f!!ked up Tab Ramos’ skull syphilis.

  12. ginhumboldt says:

Was that too much? Can I still be mad at that?

Some think I have a social disorder because I’m a US soccer fanatic. Like it’s the cause, not a symptom. If I would just switch to the church of the NFL, I’d be cured.

But I think it’s maybe why I cant find anyone to watch soccer games with, and tend to post inappropriate comments very occasionally on popular, interesting, and entertaining blogs like SBI.

Okay. Only on SBI. But that doesn’t make it any less popular, interesting, and entertaining, Ives.

  13. Hush says:

Anyone know if Agudelo will joing the sub-20 team in Guatemala? I googled, but no luck.

  14. Obviously, you’re not a golfer.

  15. Jim says:

The initial post stated that he would be playing, editing is a lovely thing

  16. JC says:

I agree. Number 3 vs number 1. Hopefully it’s an exciting game with Hannover getting a good result.

  17. abc says:

I’m going to guess not. If he was the Red Bulls probably wouldn’t release him, they can’t afford to have him gone for both national team and U-20.

  18. Hush says:

Yeah, I was thinking the same.

That sub-20 team is amazing, he’s probably going to miss out on a Concacaf trophy.

  19. H-town says:

Onyewu looks like he is ice skating in that photo, lol!

  20. Steve C says:

Ugh. It figures that ESPN3 is finally showing another Nurnberg match, and Chandler won’t be playing. =/

  21. Kevin says:

dude, being a US soccer fanatic is a sign of divine love :D Thank you

  22. Pope Eddie says:

The Ingolstadt game has been exciting so far, Buddle appears in excellent form today. I bet he bags one today, been close already.

  23. Mikey says:

I love the fact that it’s actually hard to keep up with how many Americans are playing abroad.

I remember when you could count it on one hand, haha!
