Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

Barcelona and Real Madrid took care of business in the first legs of their respective Copa del Rey semifinal ties, both coming away with victories. If they can do the same on Wednesday, the soccer world will be guaranteed at least a third Clasico this season.

Barcelona is in the driver's seat after securing a 5-0 first-leg win over Almeria. Real Madrid was only able to muster a 1-0 victory at Sevilla and will look to hold on at home to advance to the final.

Outside of Spain there's plenty of action, too, including nearly a full complement of games in Serie A and six games in the Premier League including matches in which Americans Stuart Holden, Clint Dempsey and Jermaine Jones are starting. According to West Ham's team site, Jonathan Spector picked up a minor hamstring injury in training and is out for the match against Blackpool. In Scotland, Maurice Edu will look to build off the goal he scored over the weekend, as Rangers hosts Hearts of Midlothian in a key Scottish Premier League battle.

If you will be watching any or all of Wednesday's games, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. The TV schedule is after the jump:

  1. nbluck89 says:

ESPN3 no longer lists the fulham match or the west ham match or the bolton match. damnit.

  2. Too Strong Jones says:

Dang. That does suck. I had it planned. Scoop a Bolton stream then watch clint after. That sucks.

  3. Jeremy says:

Is the Man City game really on ESPN2? Comcast is telling me that The Scott Van Pelt show is on right now and Outside the Lines is on next.

  4. nbluck89 says:

scratch that..looks like were back in business

  5. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

My guide says ESPN2 – Man City versus Birmingham.

  6. Jeremy says:

Hmm weird. Comcast has this site called Fancast where you can set your DVR to record from the website. The online guide shows Scott Van Pelt and Outside The Lines…I guess I will just tell it to record ESPN2 for the next few hours and find out what actually recorded when I get home tonight.

  7. Nick says:

The ESPN website shows Birmingham and Man City so no worries there.

  8. oncebannedtwiceshy says:

snowday in chi and i can’t decide what to watch. think i’ll go jones v spector.

  9. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

I use TV guide set to my cable provider since I’m always on my laptop.

Time slot starts at 2:30, (kickoff at 2:45 I think), ends at 5.

  10. Old Pueblo FC says:

Is Spector injured? He’s not in the squad. He’s also not playing Jones (‘Burn) – he’s playing the BlackPOOL.

  11. oncebannedtwiceshy says:

well there ya go, thanks! espn3 is acting weird too so we’ll see what i wind up with.

  12. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

Beautiful goal from Adriano for Barca.

  13. ... says:

Hmm, City and City are a little hard to distinguish on TV. Dark blue shirts and white shorts vs light blue shirts and white shorts. When the picture’s zoomed out it can take a couple seconds to figure out what player is on what team.

  14. beckster says:

He wasn’t in the lineup last weekend either…last he played was the 120 minute OT game and he did well so something must be up.

  15. Pistowie says:

Anyone got a stream for the liverpool game?

  16. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

All the balls are heading towards Birmingham’s goal as it is, I just stopped worrying and figured they were all trying to score on it.

  17. jonk says:

I read somewhere that Spector has a hamstring injury…oh yes, it’s in the text directly preceding the comment area.

  18. Too Strong Jones says:

Bolton Link? Or Holden updates would be appreciated.

  19. Kyle says:

Seconded..Bolton link? That the govt hasn’t cancelled.

  20. Spectra says:

the old site that everyone used but .fm instead of .net

  21. RedLine55 says:

Yup, Hammy still from last weekend. Hopefully back soon.

  22. Omar Little says:

Anyone know the deal with Atdhe.net and Rojadirecta? Are those seriously out of commission now?

  23. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

What an undeserved and random goal for Birmingham.

Also, Zigic did not touch that.

  24. Spectra says:

wolves with an amazing chance against Bolton but he missed wide

  25. Spectra says:

try .fm instead of .ne t

  26. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

If you want a legal play by play for most big matches and all EPL games, then you want

    link to live.skysports.com

  27. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

    Oh damn is he dead?

  28. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

    Damn man… damn.

ESPN reporting that the local broadcast company is refusing to show the replay of the accident.

That was the most brutal thing I’ve seen since I watched that one guy die on the pitch.

  29. ThaDeuce says:

Well this is a great problem to have. 3 Americans starting in the Premier League at the same time. Not playing each other, not sure which game cast to watch…. Since I’ve been watching deuce and holden longer, tempted to choose one of those…

  30. ThaDeuce says:

    SPECIFY PLEASE, NOW

  31. KungFuSoccer says:

Explanation of streams shutdown. Blame the Super Bowl. link to sports.yahoo.com

  32. Curt says:

    atdhe.net is now atdhe.me

  33. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

What a free kick goal from Kholorov.

  34. ... says:

Man City’s De Jong and Richards with a really nasty collision. De Jong got stiches + bandage and is back on the field. Richards down for a LONG time, 7-8 minutes, eventually stretchered off w/oxygen mask on. Did not look good. Head injury, neck injury kind of thing. Bad collision and then a bad fall on top of it.

  35. Andy from LA says:

Atdhe.net has been taken down. Anyone know of any other working internet feed websites for matches?

  36. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

Micah Richards launched himself at a ball in the air trying to clear it, went head first into Nigel de Jong’s head which flipped him around. His neck and head bent as he hit Nigel, and then to make matters worse he landed on the side of his neck upside down on the pitch.

His body moved a few times and then he went entirely limp and lay lifeless. Broadcast station refused to replay.

  37. Jamie says:

    Dude, look up two posts.

  38. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

    replace .net with .fm

  39. RedLine55 says:

I’m just taking an educated guess here, but it looked like something similar to what happened to Spector last year… hit his head in the air, went to ground and could move for a second, then went cold and swallowed his tongue. Trainers had to sprint out and turn both on their sides to open up the airways. Both incidents looked identical and pretty scary.

But….. we’ll prob know for sure in a bit.

  40. AME says:

Dempsey is killing it right now. Newcastle can’t get the ball off his feet without fouling. Hopefully he retains this kind of form through the Gold Cup.

  41. fischy says:

    I’m watching Fulham there

  42. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

He will be played out of position as usual and his form will drop.

You have to be used to that by now?

  43. Nick says:

Ok we all know atdhe got shut down. You can use .me, http://88.80.11.29, net.tv, or .fm
I hope this helped some of you.

  44. Brian says:

The signing of the transfer window is going to turn out to be Afellay, dude is killing it today (I know Almeria isn’t that good, but still).

How many more years can Barca dominate La Liga with this squad? They could win the next five, especially if they pick up Cesc.

They are so much fun to watch. It is a shame they don’t produce Tom Emanski style training videos on first-touch, positioning and winning the ball back. Guess it suits them better to keep it a secret.

  45. AME says:

A guy can dream, right? :) Well he looks to be playing out left in the 3 of a 4231. I would think Bob could use him there with Landon on the right.

    I feel a Dempsey goal coming soon….

  46. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

Sometimes McHanaBana needs to realize that he is wrong.

Ben Foster had no chance at saving that free kick goal. No keeper in the world would have been capable of saving that goal.

The goal was THAT good. It was arching outward, around the outside of the wall, and into the side netting. It was incredibly hit, and traveled very fast.

Some incredible goals are just that, incredible goals.

  47. CroCajun says:

Demps is playing the best football of his career right now. He is a menace to opposing defenses and is quietly becoming a world class aerial threat.

  48. Kyle says:

Is the bolton feed on atdhe working for anyone?

  49. jon says:

dempsey has looked pretty decent today, nice shot leads to a duff sitter (of course duff misses), and a nice piece of skill to bring ball down and then great defending by williamson

  50. patrick says:

wasn’t working for me. I had a good fulham feed that i lost at halftime and a good blackburn feed that turned into the Man U game

  51. Alex G says:

who is playing better Holden, Dempsey or Jones??, any updates on Jones overall performance??, thanx

  52. patrick says:

Looks like Blackpool will go the way of many other strong starters… to the Championship. own 3-1 to west ham… oh, Keane scored for WH, and Mr. Adam put one in for Blackpool

  53. patrick says:

when I had the feed in the first half he had just picked up a yellow card for a stumble turned tackle. He’s playing his usual game, lots of energy, strong tackles and some decent passing

  54. jon says:

another great lefty shot by dempsey, great save by harper….starting to look very dangerous

  55. Ben says:

Great job shielding the DF, Duff.

  56. I JIK I RED BULLZ says:

    Suarez scored for Liverpool!!! 2-0

  57. jon says:

another great breakaway for dempsey but harper with the save, hes playing some great football

  58. oncebannedtwiceshy says:

that kakuta (sp?) guy for fulham is excellent, sending some great balls to dempsey.

  59. Tony in Quakleand says:

Oh my god…Bolton gifted a goal in extra time

  60. Ben says:

    Dempsey for USMNT left back.

  61. Eric says:

    Wow Zubar is retarded.

  62. Tony in Quakeland says:

Holden named MothM. Don’t really see it. He played well, but didn’t really influnce the game to that level. (Nothing wrong with his effort – the game just didn’t find him a lot.)

  63. Old Pueblo FC says:

    Explain please . . . ?

  64. timmytwoshoezzz says:

Surely we can find another word to use as an insult?

  65. Eric says:

Sorry 92nd minute of the match Zubar attempts to give a back pass to the keeper and Sturridge puts in the back of the net. The poor keeper was having a wonderful game to.

  66. Jack says:

Good day for the new signings. Sturridge with a goal at Bolton, Suarez for Liverpool.

Bolton’s making me nervous though. After an awesome start to the season, they’re starting to show their weaknesses–namely the depth of their squad. As has become typical, though, good game for Holden.

  67. timmytwoshoezzz says:

hopefully that gets Bolton turned around since their recent form has been miserable.

  68. Dainja says:

Hmmm. Yanks Abroad is saying that Mo Edu played in an attacking midfield role today. I guess that recent goal has the Rangers thinking of possible new roles for him! (but can he be that same role for USMNT? things that make you go….)

  69. GBH says:

Barça – Real Madrid twice in one week.

    Best week ever.

  70. Ben says:

Not really. Playing in the Scotland in an advanced role does not mean he can do it at the international level.

  71. BrianSLO says:

Kinda got my hopes with your 1st sentence and I was hoping it was Nigel De Jong.

  72. timmytwoshoezzz says:

Being a fan of a Scottish Premier League team not named Celtic or Rangers, or being a fan of a La Liga team not named Real or Barca, must be absolutely horrible. The competitive imbalance is so tilted, it’s like having the Red Sox, Yankees, and 14 teams called the Pirates in the National League.

  73. Brett says:

That’s why you have battling for places to earn berths in Champions League or Europa League, fights for relegation and promotion, and cup competitions.

  74. Warren says:

Very seriously – apparently they are a threat to the homeland. Security.

According to the feds; and/or to the copyright holders.

  75. GW says:

That recent goal you saw Edu score; he’s scored goals like that on a fairly regular basis at every level since he was in high school.

It’s not a new thing for him. He has always been a very versatile player. Why do you think BB moved him to CB for a while?

More likwly Rangers are desperately thin and need help everywhere. Eventually they may even line Mo up at CB.
