  1. Shane says:

Holden back in the starting line up for Bolton according to BBC. That’s good news.

  2. DC Josh says:

Bayern Munich 1-0 over Wolfsburg. Thomas Mueller with a goal after the goalie kicks the ball off him. The game is wide open. Mario Gomes hit the crossbar in the first 5 minutes. I love German football.

  3. kevin says:

Agreed. Hoping Dempsey bags a brace today.

  4. NATO says:

Spector is in an interesting position. WH have a great chance of reaching the League Cup final and thus perhaps a trophy, something they have not had in years. Plus a great chance they will survive relegation. But I doubt they offer him another new contract at least not which he would like. He could leave for Germany now or on a freebie come summer.

  5. Beckster says:

BBC had an article on Specs open to leaving yesterday. I’d love to see him head out to Germany where the game is just a little slower and I think he’d do well. West Ham in turmoil and Spec’s stock has risen so good time to go.

  6. DC Josh says:

The good news for Bayern: Robben is coming on.

The bad news: Ribery is coming off with an injured ankle/foot.

  7. Beckster says:

Strong rumors of Jones getting loaned to Blackburn. I like that. Clearly not going to play at Schalke and Blackburn a very physical team. Love to see him playing in front of Ryan Nelson – a little intimidating!

  8. DC Josh says:

This Wolfsburg/Bayern game is electric. In the 1st 20 minutes there has been a shot off the crossbar, a goal, Ribery injury, and now a Lahm penalty off the post.

  9. Shane says:

Even with Holden back, Bolton can only name six to the bench. Still, two more than their last outing! Don’t they have any youth players at all?

Agreed about Jones. Would like to be able to see him play week in/week out in the EPL.

  10. DC Josh says:

Does anyone know why Michael Bradley is NOT in the starting lineup today?

  11. MSnats says:

Gotta love that neither espn 1 or 2 are showing epl games on saturday mornings now. Reruns of sportscenter much more important I guess. No soccer on tv for me.

I guess I’m still bitter from my boss not letting me off to go see the nats play in nashville.

  12. B16 says:

Are they carried on ESPN-3 online?

  13. hmmm says:

wait wait wait so Jermaine Jones can’t speak English? Can he understand it at least? His dad is American and wikipedia claims he spent some of his childhood visiting family. Surely he knew english then.

  14. MSnats says:

I think so, but Comcast doesn’t offer espn3. At least not where I live. I’ve actually considered moving to a different area of the country just so I could watch more soccer. Mississippi is not the place to live if you like soccer.

  15. zawick says:

agreed. they definitely dropped the ball on this.

shame they can’t play 2 PL games every saturday or at least 2 La Liga games every sunday. The ratings have to be growing.

and perhaps sooner or later, Bundesliga

  16. NATO says:

Great point. If WH get a good offer, they should take it and hopefully Spector establishes himself in the Bundesliga.

  17. DC Josh says:

Wolfsburg/Bayern: 1 half of soccer, 1 goal, 1 disallowed goal, 2 penalties, and 4 shots off the woodwork. All that’s missing is an elephant balancing on a ball.

  18. Beckster says:

Wolves are proving difficult for City. Deserve to be up by 1. Very entertaining attacking football.

  19. Thorpinski says:

No Mo Edu today. Will the injury bug ever go away for him.

  20. Franky J says:

Bolton about to turn it up

  21. Turgid Jacobian says:

    Truth.

  22. Turgid Jacobian says:

Some people were worried that Edin Dzeko wouldn’t be up to the speed of EPL, too. Pfft.

  23. Franky J says:

Matty taylor has quality but he wastes so many balls… need Chung Lee

  24. Andrew H. says:

Does the likely sale of Pienaar from Everton open the door for them to buy Landon Donovan outright?

  25. brian says:

would also like to point out that villareal vs osasuna will be on gol tv at noon et/11 ct…maybe jozy can get some pt in this one as osasuna are terrible

  26. Nick says:

Not as long as he stays in Scotland…

  27. Artie says:

He’s about to sub in, but I had the same question…

  28. devin says:

    true that

  29. BigB says:

Just read on twitter that American youngster Timothy Chandler is on the bench for Nurnberg. First time he has ever made the bench for Nurnberg and he is looking for his first ever Bundesliga apperance.

  30. Andrew H. says:

    Carlos Tevez just abused Wolverhampton!

  31. Beckster says:

Yep..all over for Wolve I think. They held tight the first half and played some great football but City just destroying them early on in the second.

  32. Stephen says:

Pretty sure he speaks English. he spent some of his childhood in Mississippi and Chicago. So, it may be broken and rusty, but I’m pretty sure he speaks it more than people realize.

  33. Stephen says:

Yeah. And supposedly the Galaxy have a “big anouncement.”

  34. Beckster says:

Credit Wolves coming back from 4 to 1 and giving it a real go. This team can’t go down. What spirit!

  35. AC says:

Maurice Edu with a goal!…Welcome back!

  36. Kelly says:

Dempsey with the assist on the Andy Johnson equaliser.

  37. Beckster says:

Spector starting for West Ham in which is apparently Grant’s last game

  38. Tim F. says:

Ives, Do you have your top ten list of games for the weekend? I can’t seem to find it.

(SBI-Didn’t do one this week. MLS Draft/Combine wiped me out so I couldn’t get to it Friday. Sorry.)

  39. Kelly says:

Spector appears to be starting…good chance to impress potential suitors.

  40. Mustafa says:

Hennessy was really weak for Wolves today. I’m betting Hahnemann gets another shot before the end of the season. McCarthy wanted to give the kid experience but if Marcus is better than Henny (and he has been in the games I’ve seen), and with Wolves flirting with relegation, you wonder how long Mick can continue the experiment.

  41. Brent McD says:

Don’t blow no bubbles. C’mon you Gooners!

  42. Timmy3030 says:

Video of the goal was just posted on yanks abroad videos

  43. Brent McD says:

RVP has a right foot. shocking ;)

  44. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

So far today we have a Mo Edu goal in his comeback, another Dempsey assist, and Spector starting.

    Business as usual.

  45. jonk says:

Sheesh, Wayne Bridge looks worse at LB for West Ham than I imagine Specs would be.

  46. Nick says:

Do you think that Avram Grant sometimes wakes up and curses John Terry?

  47. Brent McD says:

Walcott is just too quick for him

  48. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

Wayne Bridge is horrific right now, unbelievable. He is losing this game on his own.

  49. Fred says:

Also a Gladbach win, tho MB didnt start

  50. Beckster says:

The Hammers look horrific. Specs is not doing well in midfield. Thank god it’s half time. Ugly.

  51. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

I am always one to keep it unbiased, but it would be impossible to look good right now.

Their defense is just… words cannot describe how bad they are. A little tough to swallow that this is a top-class professional squad.

  52. Chris says:

He speaks English, just not very well. There are some interviews with him from the USMNT camp on the ussoccer website.

  53. kev says:

Isn’t Hennessy also the Wales no1?

I agree. I believe Marcus will get a few starts soon or by Feb I can imagine because Hennessy is not up to saving them from relegation.

  54. Antonio says:

    Videos of any of those?

  55. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

Spector has been West Ham’s best attacking player.

How many times have I said or read that in my life? Probably once, and that happened 10 seconds ago as I typed it.

  56. Red says:

    People need to understand something:
-Fox has the EPL games (almost all of the non-early games)
-ESPN bought some games from Fox. More this year than last year. Most of them are early morning games and midweek games.
-ESPN3.com would broadcast games they either bought and cannot fit in their schedule or games already aired on ESPN2.
-Foxsoccer.tv might be your best bet for legal online games
-ESPN can’t just broadcast a game it doesn’t own when they have nothing on (unless it wants to spend more money).

  57. Red says:

    He scored today.

  58. Nick says:

Wayne Bridge, thanks for coming today.

  59. Doc says:

Anyone see Cani’s long range goal for Villarreal?

  60. Brent McD says:

Avram Grant looks like a man who knows the axe is about to fall

  61. Eric says:

Guzan kept a clean sheet today for Hull City. I didnt watch it because I refuse to ever watch Hull City games again but good news for Brad.

  62. Plebian says:

    news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/b/blackburn_rovers/9363048.stm

The very end is when the manager talks about Jermaine Jones moving to Blackburn

  63. Brett says:

Why do people say this? As long as you’re “hoping”, why not just go for the gold and hope for a hat trick? Are people that eager to show people they know what a ‘brace’ is?

  64. ThaDeuce says:

Holden got the start and went the full 90 and Dempsey bags an assist and is even highlighted here on the fulhamfc website. Pad those states Deuce!
    link to fulhamfc.com

  65. f’in A man, looks like you need something to take your anger and frustration out.

Might as well ask why is a tree good? Why is the sunset good? Why are boobs good?

  66. ThaDeuce says:

maybe a hat trick is just too much to hope for, and so we hope for a brace!

I always hope for a brace, its just the max I will allow myself to hope for. Its always possible with Deuce as well, who tends to score in pairs in big games.

  67. StevenG says:

    connection?

  68. Jack says:

I remember on the MNT Blog during the October friendlies, they mentioned that he was having some trouble understanding the coaching staff and players at the camp, and that Michael Bradley was kind of helping him out and explaining the direction. I’d imagine that if he doesn’t fully understand soccer words, his grasp of the language can’t be that good.

  69. Jack says:

West Ham was absolutely painful. Specs didn’t look as terrible as most of the other Hammers, actually. Don’t know if that’s much of a complement, but there you have it.

Tough loss for Bolton. They could have used that. Glad to see Holden on the field again, though.

  70. Mattmatumbo says:

    Findley didn’t dress for Forest.

  71. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

Don’t jump on me for this, but as someone pointed out above, Michael Bradley does not start and Gladbach wins.

For his sake, hopefully the manager didn’t notice.

  72. jonk says:

He has to get a visa now that his work permit was finally granted…and that might require a trip back to the US. Hopefully he was training with Forest while he waited for a work permit and we can expect him once the visa is sorted.

  73. jonk says:

Pretty sure Bradley doesn’t have to worry about playing time. Via a secondhand account, Bradley’s manager is reported to have said (in response to bids for Bradley) something akin to “If he goes, we don’t have a chance to stay up”

  74. A Chicago Fire Fan says:

They are in a desperate position. I wouldn’t count anything out really. If the manager thinks switching up the lineup will help, then it very well might happen.

You have nothing to lose at this point.

  75. 20 says:

should have been 2 Dempsey assists. Poor finish by Damien Duff on a breakaway

  76. Ricky B. Free says:

The big anouncement is not about Landon Donovan, its about the Galaxy signing a big name.

  77. 20 says:

Dempsey was brilliant today, Etuhu was good as well. Fulham should have won but for a really bad error by Stockdale.

  78. 20 says:

Russell Brand did not look happy today lol

  79. b says:

I’ve never even heard of this guy and I keep up with our young players abroad.

  80. b says:

ESPN lists him as born in Germany… has he ever played for the US team at any level?

  81. Jamie Z. says:

Yeah, their recent form must be getting to him. Whenever I see him, he looks frazzled, unkempt, and out of sorts.

  82. jackie says:

So what does Altidore exactly do at Villreal?

  83. Glaing says:

He gets valuable training, however there are enough teams needing a striker. I think its time to go out on loan.

  84. Ryan says:

Castillo started for Puebla tonight, they lost. Bornstein is starting and playing now for Tigres on Telemundo, and Torres and Gomez start on the bench for Pachuca!!!

  85. Second City says:

Bornstein starting as a withdrawn midfielder.

    Interesting.

  86. Isaac says:

You mean he’s playing off the main forward?(Sorry I don’t mean to sound stupid :])

  87. Peter says:

He’s listed on Tigres roster wikipedia page as a midfielder.

  88. Second City says:

Not really a holding midfielder but definitely favoring the defensive play.

Truth be told he’s playing extremely passive and shying away from receiving the ball.

    Looks nervous and lacking confidence.

  89. Isaac says:

Interesting. Not national team implication interesting, but intersting nontheless…

  90. oncebannedtwiceshy says:

    anybody know bornstein’s number?

  91. SwerveZ says:

I agree. There’s only so much “valuable training” that one can endure without getting actual game time…and he’s at that limit.

  92. Peter says:

    Nice pk for Tigres.

  93. oncebannedtwiceshy says:

i watched for 20 minutes, didn’t even see him (crappy stream, hard to make out diff players)

  94. Mattmatumbo says:

Thanks for the info, i forgot about visas.

  95. Kenny_B says:

Yes, positively amazing. Just a phenomenal goal.

  96. Kenny_B says:

    Sorry,

I disagree. He is playing for a very good coach and is learning from some very good strikers. Villarreal is a very good club. He needs to be patient. His time last year was wasted at Hull. Bad Club, Bad Coach, Bad results.

  97. Kenny_B says:

Galaxy are supposedly signing Claude Makelele.

  98. b says:

If you are suggesting they would bench their second or third best player based on wining once when he came in as a sub instead of starting, then they do have something to lose at this point if they bench him: one of the few decent players they have. And (as even their manager realizes) their chance to stay up.

  99. smokeminside says:

Brett, why do you think they call him Deuce? If his nickname were Trey, then we’d all go for the hat trick hope. But if I were an excellent soccer player, I would like my nickname to be “Pele to the second power” and I’d be thrilled if someone hoped I scored a brace.

When I was a kid at Shriner’s Hospital, that phrase had a whole different meaning. And I really was a kid at Shriner’s hospital. We all wished we didn’t need to score a brace, and we’d be pissed if someone hoped we did.
