RSL hire Brown as assistant coach (UPDATED)

When Real Salt Lake lost assistant coach Robin Fraser to Chivas USA, the club figured to find another former MLS player to replace Fraser. RSL has done just that, tapping a 13-year MLS veteran for the job.

Real Salt Lake is set to hire long-time Chicago Fire defender C.J. Brown as the club newest assistant coach, sources with knowledge of the appointment told SBI on Monday evening.

(UPDATE) Real Salt Lake has made the appointment official, annoucing Brown's hiring this morning.

Brown retired from MLS at the end of the 2010 season and joins a coaching staff that includes former MLS players Kreis, Jeff Cassar and Miles Joseph.

Brown, 35, recently finished a 13-year career in MLS that saw him spend his entire career with the Fire. He finished as the career leader in games and minutes played for the Fire, and was a part of the 1998 MLS Cup-winning squad. He also won four U.S. Open Cup titles with the Fire. Brown also made 15 appearances for the U.S. men's national team.

What do you think of Brown joining RSL? Like the hire? Wish he were joining the Fire coaching staff instead?

Doesn’t seem like that was his choice… was it?

On the bright side…. yeah, I got nothing.

  5. I’m sure if there wasn’t friction between CJ and CDLC the Fire would have brought him on board, especially since Chicago was in need of an asst. coach until a week ago as well. I’d rather see him on the sidelines w/ the Fire, but I’m glad a team picked him up and will be utilizing him in a coaching capacity. Good for CJ.

Was this the news you referred to last night during the Live Chat?

(SBI-Yes, was going to run it last night, but wait until morning. Nice work by Real Salt Lake rushing out its announcement before 8am local time. Thought they would wait a bit longer.)

I’d saying spending your whole career with one club pretty much fulfills the unwritten “Fire till I die contract” better than 99 percent of other players.

CJ Brown is a (CA) Bay Area guy! Too bad he never landed at the Earthquakes. I watched him play a match in college vs Univ of San Francisco and he ripped a volley from midfield that beat the keeper.
