In the same month that the New York Red Bulls signed Maryland standout Matt Kassel to a Homegrown Player contract, the club has now added the first defender from its academy to the senior team.

The Red Bulls have signed U.S. Under-20 national team defender Sacir Hot to a Homegrown Player contract, sources told SBI on Friday. Hot becomes the fourth Homegrown Player signed by New York since the Homegrown Player system was started by Major League Soccer.

Hot was regarded as one of the top defensive prospects in college soccer, and left Boston College after two seasons. He had recently been on trials in Germany with Borussia Moenchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund, but the 19-year-old Fair Lawn, New Jersey native ultimately settled on the club who's academy he had developed in.

What do you think of this development? Excited to see a talented young defender added to the squad?

I guess BD and BMG weren’t interested or didn’t offer enough money. Hope he works out for the MetroBulls.

  2. dman says:

Sacir Hot….so hot….so hot right now

  3. jspech says:

Best news ever! Yoohoo! I might make it to some reserve games now. On a seperate issue can any speak to maybe now that D2 have lost sanction, is there a partner maybe in the works with MLS team and some of these D2 teams.

  4. otergod says:

I thought i read it somewhere but i think he was only there a couple days and then went home. Makes me think Red Bulls offered him a contract and he took it.

  5. otergod says:

to me it seems obvious that MLS will simply pick NASL and USL of all their top teams and (IMO) start a MLS.2 at some point in the near future (near meaning we are expanding 1 team a year or so).

  6. over-it says:

From his comments earlier on MLSSoccer, it appears that his heart was with playing for the Red Bulls and NY. Not certain he even had the chops for BMG or Dortmund. But no biggie, as he appeared to have a strong desire to play in front of his hometown fans anyways.

  7. The Dude says:

Yes! Good news. I’ve liked all the offseason moves that NY has made EXCEPT Luke Rodgers coming in. We need another world-class striker.

  8. otergod says:

guy on BS said a friend of his said that he left after 1 training day with BD. Guessing that’s when he accepted the Redbulls offer

  9. otergod says:

not accepted, but was offered and he was going to accept

  10. Ben says:

    umm…yes, I do like it.

  11. RBNY4Life says:

    No worries… we have Agudelo

  12. Paul, North Jersey says:

We don’t need a “world-class” striker. I’m sure you don’t think that the only way we can win the league is by signing Carlos Tevez or someone of that caliber. League One isn’t as terrible as people make it out to be. Give Rodgers a chance.

  13. Scott A says:

Nice to see NY doing things the right way. Provides cover in a position in which it’s not desperately needed but is really nice.

  14. Jeff says:

Between Mendes, Lassiter, and Hot, I don’t see why they can’t use Marquez in the Midfield.

  15. GSScasual says:

    YESSSSSSS

  16. chris says:

yes! now the Red Bulls can stop signing washed up League one strikers and worthless scandinavians. Plus they need to get rid of Miller, hes garbage.

If the Red Bulls would have signed Duka they could of actually been close to having a strong team made up of homegrown players. This is how a MLS should operate with academy players.

  17. Paris Hilton says:

    That’s Hot!

  18. JayMah says:

…so, when are they signing a better Goal Keeper??? When that day happens, I can feel very comfortable that we win the Cup…

  19. Lil Wayne says:

Drop it like it’s Hot, drop drop it like its Hot.

  20. GSScasual says:

Much to your surprise, goalkeeping was not the reason we did not get the cup… making us nervous? yes, BuonaTime was legendary at giving us all a scare, but he was ultimately a revelation between the sticks last season.

  21. pete says:

Hopefully Hot is as good of a soccer player as he is a poker player!

  22. mom says about the stove says:

    Don’t touch that, it’s HOT!

  23. an engine after a cross-country trip says:

    is HOT!

  24. Colin says:

is this kid a centerback or fullback?

  25. Steve McSteve says:

Looks like our center backs can look forward to years of Hot-Reaming.

  26. JoeW says:

I don’t know what he’s like as a player and how he’d fit in–I can’t comment on that. But it’s a good thing when teams are adding talent from their academies.

  27. Scott A says:

Sounds like that will Hertzog. That’s Albright though.

  28. john.q says:

ouch! it could leave a Marquez.

  29. Hutskizzle says:

worthless Scandinavians? technically they haven’t signed any Scandinavians except Solli. but im going to assume u mean Lindpere. so if ure calling Lindpere a worthless scandinavian then u have absolutely ZERO idea what ur talking about. and im just gonna end that discussion right there.

also, Solli and Rodgers have yet to play a second of soccer with NY. how are they worthless? bc u read rodger’s wiki page and his stats werent that exciting for ur preference of a league 1 striker? neither were Joel’s when he signed. meanwhile Solli has 40 caps for the 12th ranked country in the world in the toughest confederation. still say hes worthless?

and we couldn’t sign Duke even though we tried, but i still think Tchani was the better choice and hes worked out well for us instead.

  30. Hutskizzle says:

kinda upset theres not any haters on here crying that we signed 3 top 10 draft picks to HG deals

  31. Hutskizzle says:

oh wait, forgot about Nielsen. hes been hurt though, so i guess u can sorta/kinda make an argument with him. so have it

  32. Dinho says:

    hotter than Hansel?

  33. b says:

Some of these jokes are saciriously bad…

  34. b says:

In what alternate reality is Sacir Hot a top ten draft pick?

  35. Hutskizzle says:

blahh dont feel like looking for them tonight. lemme check tomorrow. ill get back at u
