UCL Rewind: Madrid ties Milan, Arsenal falls to Shakhtar and more

  Pedro Leon

By IAN HOLLIDAY

When Filippo Inzaghi took AC Milan from 1-0 down to a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid in just 10 minutes, it looked like the hosts were destined to claim all three points. A 92nd-minute goal from Pedro Leon changed all that, salvaging a point for Madrid.

The result was probably fair for a Madrid side that outshot its hosts 21-7 and possessed the ball for almost 60 percent of the match. With the draw and Ajax's loss to AJ Auxerre in the other group G match, Real Madrid maintains its five-point lead and has secured passage to the next round.

Wednesday's most surprising result was Arsenal's 2-1 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. Theo Walcott opened the scoring in the 10th minute, but Dmytro Chygrynskiy drew the hosts level in the 28th before former Arsenal man Eduardo gave Shakhtar the lead just before halftime. For Shakhtar, the loss avenges the 5-1 beatdown suffered at the Emirates in October and draws the club level with Arsenal on 9 points in group H.

In other Champions League action on Wednesday:

Big clubs from around Europe earned comfortable wins over less quality opposition. French champions Marseille earned the most lopsided victory, winning 7-0 at Slovakian club MSK Zilina. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich got a hat-trick from Mario Gomez and a goal from Thomas Muller to down CFR Cluj in Romania. English champions Chelsea also took care of business, defeating Spartak Moscow 4-1 at Stamford Bridge. The wins put both Bayern and Chelsea into the round of 16.

Here is a rundown of all the scores from Wednesday's Champions League action:

GROUP E

CFR Cluj 0, Bayern Munich 4

FC Basel 2, AS Roma 3

GROUP F

Chelsea 4, Spartak Moscow 1

MSK Zilina 0, Marseille 7

GROUP G

AC Milan 2, Real Madrid 2

AJ Auxerre 2, Ajax Amsterdam 1

GROUP H

Shaktar Donetsk 2, Arsenal 1

What did you think of today's results? Surprised to see Arsenal lose? Impressed by Marseille, Chelsea, or Bayern? Think the Madrid-Milan result was fair?

  1. Eric says:

Inzaghi was 3 steps offside on the second goal. It was amazing that the linesman missed it.

  2. It’s Italy… they’ve got mafia all over the place. I bet that ref got paid good money. ;)

  3. AQK says:

I think linesmen are intimidated by the fans in the san siro. If you raise your flag and call back a goal you’re liable to get batteries or flares thrown at you. Same thing happened Inter – Barca last year on Sneidjer’s header.

  4. Batteries and flares precisely. So I say we make a phone call to the White House, tell Mr. Obama they’ve got weapons of mass destruction over in the San Siro, and then drop a good ole fashioned A-bomb on their heinies. That might solve the problem.

  5. Roberto says:

Aslan you are an idiot redneck army dude go somewhere else. what do you have against Italians

  6. Nothing. I dated one. I’m neither an idiot, a redneck or an army dude. It’s called humor. Go back to school and get an ejakashion.

  7. CplDaniel says:

that was so incredibly absurd an a suggestion that reasonable person could have taken seriously, and therefore rises to the level of legitimate humor…However it just wasn’t funny. Maybe it’s all in the delivery
Batteries and flares??? PRECISELY!! Call up the White House! Alert NORAD! AC Milan has got WMDs!!

  8. CplDaniel says:

ooops…I forgot a couple very important words in that last post. Here is how it should read:

that was so incredibly absurd of a suggestion that (NO!)reasonable person could have possibly taken it seriously, and therefore rises to the level of legitimate humor…However it just wasn’t funny. Maybe it’s all in the delivery
Batteries and flares??? PRECISELY!! Call up the White House! Alert NORAD! AC Milan has got WMDs!!

  9. DC Josh says:

Real Madrid was dominant. Milan’s defense is so porous, yet Gooch can’t crack the bench. Milan was lucky to get 1 point last night. Now that Madrid is in the knock-out stage, let’s see if they can get to the quarterfinals.

On a side note, I am so sick of Ronaldo’s fluttering feet and monotonous stepovers that take him no where. Use your size and speed you showgirl!

  10. Jay says:

Italians are whiny little girls in the world of soccer. See Pippo Inzaghi, who was born offsides but never gets called for it because of the slime corruption that is Italy.

  11. Smirking Kitten says:

It really was absurd that goal was allowed. I cannot believe that all five officials missed that he was offside…

  12. And you were criticizing my delivery? One word for you: Grammar. And no, I’m talking about the sweet old lady who gave birth to your mother.

  13. Spectra says:

I know, Ronaldo hasn’t scored at all lately. (Sarcasm) And he’s so useless that they usually only triple team the guy.

    Serious note
Ronaldo is too flashy at times and a bit of a whiner but his attitude combined with skill is why teams put so much emphasis on him and then they have no idea what to do with Higuain and Ozil.
