BY ADAM SERRANO

It's a battle of a pair of teams at the bottom of the table at the Home Depot Center as D.C. United visits Chivas USA (ESPN2, 7pm PST).

Both clubs come into the match looking to salvage something from seasons that quickly gone awry. For United, the club will look to build on a satisfying win at home against expansion Philadelphia while Chivas USA looks for their first win since July 31st. This week's match comes as both clubs prepare for midweek fixtures in the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals.

I will be providing commentary throughout the match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

FINAL – 1-0. Chivas USA earns a 1-0 lead to pull to within one point of climbing out of the Western Conference cellar. In the end a 13th minute goal by Justin Braun was the difference in the Rojiblancos sixth win of the season. Both clubs will now prepare for the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup with D.C. United hosting Columbus and Chivas USA traveling to Seattle to take on the Sounders. That's all from me, check back later for more coverage of tonight's game on Soccer By Ives.

This has been Adam Serrano, thank you for following along.

———

91st Minute – Braun gets his curtain call as Zemanski enters the field.

———

90th Minute – Four minutes of stoppage time. Zemanski about to come onto the field as the fans take part in the time tested LA tradition of leaving before the match ends to beat traffic.

———-

89th Minute – D.C. United getting a bit of pressure, but Thornton is a bit too big to allow anything to get by him.

———–

84th Minute – YIKES. Najar picks up a yellow after hacking down Michael Lahoud. A little bit of youthful exuberance right there from the Honduran.

———–

81st Minute –  In addition to the Barra Brava and the Pontius family, I have to admit there is a fair number of D.C. United fans in this stadium. Surprising.

———

78th Minute – Local boy Chris Pontius comes into the game for Zayner. Big cheer comes up from his family members.

————

75th Minute – Poor corner and a goal kick for D.C.

————

74th Minute – SAVE!! Perkins with a finger tip save on the Braun break away. Corner for Chivas.

————-

73rd Minute – Braun picks up a yellow for bringing down James.

————-

71st Minute – CHIVAS USA Sub: Michael Lahoud comes on for Rodolfo Espinoza.

————

69th Minute – SAVE! Thornton comes up big on a the Moreno header to preserve the lead for the Rojilblancos.

————

67th Minute – Quaranta bfires a shot that brings down Saragosa. The Brazilian is helped off but will likely be right back in the game momentarily.

————

64th Minute – Najar gets behind the defense again. The teenager has looked incredibly active since coming in and is just laying waste to Mariano Trujillo.

————

62nd Minute – D.C. United putting a bit of pressure as Thornton nearly muffs the corner, but Chivas USA clears.

————-

61st Minute – SAVE THORNTON! Najar breaks free and fires a shot that forces Thornton to come up big. Nice little play right there by the teenager.

————

58th Minute – Najar playing just to the left of Moreno. He's immediately fouled by Saragosa as a bit of a welcome to the match.

————-
 57th Minute –
D.C. United SUB: Andy Najar comes into the match for Adam Cristman.

————–

56th Minute – James tries to dispossess Gordon who plays it Nagamura. James comes back and brings down the Brazilian, who will now walk off the field limping. He quickly returns however.

————-

54th Minute – Nagamura gets clipped and is brought down. He looks like he is in some pain right now. He's still on the ground.

————–

50th Minute – Poor effort and the header goes out for a goal kick. Look for Chivas to try and spread the possession around. Alan Gordon now in for Maldonado.

————–

49th Minute – D.C. United with a corner.

————-

47th Minute – For all curious minds: Najar, Hamid, and Pontius were all kept off the roster due to the Open Cup match against Columbus on Wednesday.

————

46th Minute – We're back. Subs at the half for D.C.: Barry Rice gives way for Julius James.

———-

HALFTIME- There's the whistle. Chivas USA up 1-0 in what was a dull half despite some crazy moments toward the end. The Rojiblancos have dominated possession and are unlucky not to be up by more than just a Justin Braun header. At the half, it's 1-0 Chivas USA.

———

45th Minute – Looks like it was Saragosa and Rice on the collision.

———

45th Minute – WOW!! Another crazy segment for D.C. and Chivas. Quaranta fires a ball that goes off the cross bar and bounces off Thornton and nearly goes into the net forcing a corner. On the corner, Moreno sends in a header that Thornton saves off the line, but a United player and a Chivas defender collide. Both are down but are now being helped off.

————

44th Minute – WOW! Braun breaks free of the defenders and gets an open try and net. Instead of taking it on goal, he fires from just outside the box. An effort that sails way over the bar. Poor effort by the striker.

———-

42nd Minute – Espinoza sends in a nice cross, but Braun is unable to get a head to it. Just missed nearly making the score 2-0.

———-

37th Minute – Maldonado gets the ball in a forward position, but his feet fail him and he is unable to get a shot off.

———-

35th Minute – SAVE! Braun with a nice give and go with Espinoza. The burly striker cuts through the defense, but Perkins comes up big for the save and United clear the danger.

———–

34th Minute – D.C. starting to generate a bit more pressure, but unfortunately for Ben Olsen's men, Jaime Moreno and Adam Cristman are not causing any havoc in the Chivas back line.

———–

33rd Minute – United gets a shot off, but the effort by Barry Rice is over the bar.

———-

32nd Minute – United earn a corner. They've come alive the last five minutes and are pressing the Chivas USA backline.

———-

28th Minute – It's a very consistent narrative for Chivas USA at home. Getting a lot of possession, but few goal scoring opportunities.

———–

27th Minute – JUST WIDE! Braun beats the Chivas defense and plays a nice ball into Maldonado, but the forward sends the shot just wide of Perkins.

———–

24th Minute – Match has slowed considerably as Chivas looks to spray the ball around the park and keep possession from United.

———–

20th Minute – Moreno with ANOTHER big foul has he chops down Trujillo while going for the ball. The Veteran was lucky to not be booked right there.

———–

19th Minute – Moreno picks up  foul after throwing Nagamura to the ground. Yikes. Looks like the older gentleman still has a bit of that fire in him.

———–

16th Minute – D.C. United will need to come back for the second time while down to Chivas USA. They are 1-14-1 when going down a goal first. That one victory however was against Chivas USA.

————

14th Minute – Jazic plays a great ball into Braun who shakes off Jakovic and heads the ball past Troy Perkins. It's 1-0 to Chivas USA.

————

13th Minute – GOAL!!!!!! JUSTIN BRAUN FOR CHIVAS USA!

————

11th Minute – Very nice atmosphere right now. Four Supporters Groups are present. Three for Chivas USA and also the Barra Brava making the long trip from the Capitol. Very impressive.

————

8th Minute – D.C. earn the corner, but Chivas clear. The effort comes bck to Rice, who buries it into the crowd. Poor effort by the defender.

———–

7th Minute – Both coaches will be wise to try for the early lead. D.C. is undefeated (3-0) when scoring first while Chivas USA is 5-1 when scoring first. That one loss? to D.C. United on May 29th

———–

5th Minute –  D.C. United trying to pile on some pressure as they win the ball back from Chivas. D.C. is trying to get on Chivas USA early as they are unbeaten when scoring first.

————

3rd Minute – SAVE! Quaranta with a shot from distance straight into the safe hands of Thornton.

————

2nd Minute – Early corner for United in front of the traveling Barra Brava fan group. The initial effort is cleared, but Thornton comes u big with a save to force a second corner.

————-

1st Minute – And we're off at the Home Depot Center!

————-

PREGAME: Classy move by Chivas USA to honor Jaime Moreno before the game.

————-

PREGAME: It will be important for both clubs to go into the lead into the half. When the two clubs are leading at the end of the first 45, they are a combined 5-0. Two wins for Chivas and three for D.C. United. However, when the clubs trail at the half, they are a nightmarish 0-14-1. Both clubs falling seven times each with D.C. earning the only draw.

—————

PREGAME: Chivas USA will be without the services of Blair Gavin who aggravated his hamstring strain in practice this week. It is unknown yet if he'll be available for Chivas USA's Open Cup match against Seattle.

—————-

Oh look, 1:40 left in the WNBA game. Which means 10 minutes of real time.

Of all the sports, MLS seems to get screwed over by WNBA broadcasts more than anything else…

  2. Frank says:

It seems like Perkins starts every time I watch a United game specifically to see Hamid

  3. anon says:

Any particular reason why Andy Najar didn’t get the start?

  4. irishapple21 says:

And DC continue their downward death spiral. Hopefully, they’ll be able to go the distance and earn the worst record in MLS history. You can do it! Believe!

  5. Zorbthegeek says:

How is it decided which matchups are the ESPN game of the week? Two last place teams are not how I’d want to market my league. This is about the fifth best fixture of the weekend. MLB shoves Sox v. Yanks down our throats everytime they play; I don’t want that but teams like FC Dallas w/ their empty stadium and last place teams like these two should not be our showcase matches. It’s like Lions v. Rams on MNF–the NFL would never let that happen!

  6. Thor says:

I Know… Think Hamid would have stopped the Goal?

3 games in 7 days so Najar was rested 1st half

  7. DR says:

Open Cup Semi vs Columbus on Wednesday and I’m guessing Benny was trying to give some starting XI guys a bit of rest for the clubs last shot at some sort of glory this season.

  8. DR says:

We’ll still be light years behind Red Bull in terms of complete and total FAILURE.

  9. Scott A says:

I look forward to seeing you guys come up with more lame promotions like “We Win Trophies” and subsequently making fools of yourselves
