The third team to reach the quarterfinals will be decided today as England and Germany do battle (10am, ESPN) in a match between two European heavyweights.
England enters the match having struggled in Group C, where it finished second and scored just two goals. Fabio Capello needs to lead the Three Lions to victory here, otherwise he'll feel the wrath of an English media which is pouncing on his every move.
Having won Group D, Germany heads into the game boasting a talented, young team. Led by the crafty Phillip Lahm, the Germans will aim to continue its success against its well known opponent.
This is Franco Panizo and I will be providing commentary throughout this morning's match. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Commentary is after the jump

FINAL- That's all for me for now. Please feel free to leave your post-game thoughts, opinions and analysis in the comments section below. As always, stay tuned to SBI and Foxsoccer.com for more coverage of the World Cup.
——-
FINAL- Germany looks as strong a team as any. Muller, Ozil, Podolski, Klose, all are enjoying strong tournaments. Their runs with and without the ball are superb.
——-
FINAL- England's early exit from the World Cup is sure to come with lots of criticism, especially geared towards Capello, Rooney and Terry and the defense.
——-
FINAL- Germany demolishes England, 4-1. Germany was clearly the better side today, but there is sure to be lots of talk about the goal that wasn't called.
——-
90th minute- Just waiting for the final whistle now.
——-
88th minute- While it wasn't as bad as France or Italy, England was definitely one of the disappointments of this World Cup. Wayne Rooney failed to live up to the hype of being one of the best players on the planet and the team mustered just three goals in four games.
——-
83rd minute- I know U.S. national team fans are disappointed with the loss to Ghana yesterday, but they can at least take pleasure in knowing their team exited the tournament with a hard-fought match, while England has been completely dominated over the course of this game.
——-
79th minute- While the English media will probably point to Lampard's goal that never was, Capello will surely receive a bunch of backlash for this dismantling. Will he stay on as manager through Euro 2012 as his contract says? I don't think so, not with these performances and this result.
——-
75th minute- For everyone picking a Spain-Brazil final, not so fast. While Germany's team has more youth to it than in previous World Cups, it should definitely be considered a favorite.
——-
71st minute- Another example of England getting caught with too many players forward. That's the risk you take when you push most players forward.
Ozil made a strong run down the left side before laying the ball off to the center of the penalty area to a wide open Muller, who scored easily.
——-
70th minute- GOAL GERMANY! 4-1! Muller scores again on another counter attack. WOW.
——-
69th minute- England takes a poor free kick and pays for it as Germany springs a counter that ends with Muller blasting a shot to the near post.
——-
66th minute- GOAL MULLER! 3-1 GERMANY! Muller hits a hard shot past James on an incredible counter attack.
——-
64th minute- Capello makes a change: Joe Cole in for Milner.
——-
63rd minute- Schweinsteiger hits a low shot from the right side of the 18, but it just goes wide. Better there from Germany.
——-
59th minute- Muller gets by a defender with a nice move but his shot is off the mark.
——-
56th minute- Milner hasn't impressed me much. Capello would do his team wonders if he replace Milner, maybe with someone like Aaron Lennon.
——-
53rd minute- If anyone is going to score the equalizer today, it looks to be Lampard. He has come close twice. Well, once. The other time he scored but it was not called in his favor.
——-
52nd minute- Lampard smacks a free kick from distance off the crossbar, and England almost pulls level.
——-
47th minute- Friedrich picks up a silly yellow card for a foul on Defoe near midfield.
——-
46th minute- Second half is underway.
——-
HALFTIME- England needs to keep pressing, while Germany needs to settle things down and get back to its short passing sequences. It has been a wide open affair, in favor of England, since Upson's headed goal.
——-
HALFTIME- Incredible stuff. One moment Germany is dominating, the next England pulls one back and looks to have equalized. Second half should be very open and fun to watch.
——-
HALFTIME- The first 45 comes to a close and Germany leads, 2-1, but what a half.
——-
43rd minute- England is now controlling the tempo of the game. Germany looks a little shaky after giving up a goal.
——-
40th minute- That's sure to spark more of the soccer-needs-replay conversation. How does everyone feel about it? Think it should be used?
——-
39th minute- Wow. Replays show that the ball was clearly inside the goal, but no goal given.
——-
38th minute- WOW! Lampard floats one over Neuer off the restart, and it bounces on the goal line. Referees deem it to not have crossed completely. We'll have to see it on replay.
——-
37th minute- GOAL ENGLAND! Upson heads a Gerrard cross over an oncoming Neuer! Now we have a game on our hands!
——-
36th minute- Klose with some great dribbling inside the corner of England's six yard line and his shot is pushed out by James. Nice individual skill there by Klose, who is knocking on the door for a second.
——-
35th minute- England almost pulls one back, but Lahm makes a clearance after a shot gets past Neuer.
——-
32nd minute- GOAL PODOLSKI! 2-0! Another great passing sequence carves open England's defense, and Podolski nets from the left side of the penalty area. WOW.
——-
30th minute- Sharp passing down the middle puts Klose through on goal, but James saves a would-be goal.
——-
27th minute- Milner tries to dribble by a guy, but he runs into referee Jorge Larrionda, who strips him of the ball.
——-
25th minute- Barry unleashes a shot from distance, but its gobbled up by Neuer.
——-
21st minute- Fabio Capello must be livid with his defense there. They just let the ball bounce towards goal and watched as Klose got onto it. Upson was only nearby defender.
——-
20th minute- GOAL KLOSE! 1-0 GERMANY! Neuer boots a kick upfield, Klose catches England's defense napping and gets on the end of it before slotting the ball home.
——-
18th minute- Khedira and Schweinsteiger get called for a foul on Lampard around 25 yards out. This could be dangerous.
——-
15th minute- Muller and Ozil play a great one-two down the right flank. More of that is sure to unlock the English defense. Neat stuff there.
——-
12th minute- Cole slides into a tackle and Muller is in pain. Looked like a good challenge there.
——-
7th minute- Lahm finds space down the right flank to maneuver. How he fares against Ashley Cole could prove to be vital today.
——-
5th minute- Ozil gets inside the box, takes a shot but its saved well by James.
——-
3rd minute- Is this going to be the game where Rooney steps up and takes charge? He's struggled to impose his will so far in the tournament.
——-
1st minute- And we're underway. Who is everyone taking today?
——-
PRE-GAME- Here is England's starting XI (in a 4-4-2 formation):
James; Johnson, Terry, Upson, A. Cole; Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Milner; Defoe, Rooney.
——-
PRE-GAME- Here is Germany's starting XI (in a 4-4-2 formation):
Neuer; Lahm, Friedrich, Mertesacker, Boateng; Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Podolski, Muller; Ozil, Klose.

really looking forward to this one. anyone else remember their meeting in italy 90? one of the england players was running around the pitch aimlessly with a bandaged head wound. epic
yes, i do, west germany wins 4-3 on penalty kicks in what was a tense game
Only 4 more years
I think England will win this game, but I’m hoping for Germany….
I’ve got Alemania (watching in Cancun…priorities, man!) winning 3-1. Simply outrunning and outclassing the Lions and a wonder strike from Rooney.
Has Frank Lampard even touched the ball yet?
Seems like when something doesn’t go right for England, their players are already very quick to throw up their hands in frustration. Not a good sign….
the ageless Klose, scoring again!
The American defense should feel proud.
And Germany scores…
Klose now surpasses Klinsmann on the WC all time goals list. where were Terry and Upson on that one..?
that Klose goal looked very similar to Ghana’s second goal yesterday. shameful central defending
And Rooney punts it into the stands
Jozy has a defender all over him and hits it wide. Klose has a defender all over him and slots it home. Just sayin =(
Th only difference is that Calamity James commited a blunder here by not coming out earlier.
lol, these ESPN announcers are about to choke on their english tea and crumpets. the bitterness in their voices is coming through loud and clear. hahaha
Terry and Upson are having a nightmare
And Germany scores again…
Whole England squad is now having a nightmare.
Goal again! I’d like to revise my prediction to 6-1 Germany.
England is showing that USA really WAS the best team in that group.
Thank God the USA had won the group. It would have been a massacre agaisnt this German side
Univision announcer: “Inglaterra es una triste imagen”
I thought Rooney was supposed the set the Word Cup on fire… LOL
That was funny… Univision folks call it the way they see it.
Holy sh!t. what a comeback. no goal??!??
that second one was a goal! holy crap!!! revenge for 1966!!!!!
Welcome to the world of instant replay Ladies and Gents.
This is unbelievable
England paying the price for the 1966 final
That was goal..
England complaining about a disputed goal against Germany….Hmmm..Ironic isn’t it?
That doesn’t even need instant replay, that was a clear goal by 2 feet.
Sepp Blatter just crapped his pants.
Interesting game… fast paced one
Maybe not. Ghana had the better of Germany in the last group game I thought.
The US DREAMS of having a player like Rooney.
This is how football is supposed to be played.
Both teams are doubling the quickness we normally play with. Had England played like this against us, we would have been smashed.
think the English will be howling for goal-line technology now?
Video replays? Makes perfect sense unless you’re Sepp Blatter. What. A. Joke.
Funny when Blatter is in the stadium the refs always get a goal call wrong.
English fans singing “The referee’s a wanker…” And indeed he is. Or blind.
yep, that surely has to be the final straw, right?
Linesman out of position. That can happen depending on the speed of play and a too-quick reversal. But if you had one or two human goal judges at either end…
Exciting game. Too many Goal errors in this WC. They’ve gotta consider some sort of replay technology.
Univision digs out video of the 1966 disputed goal to show us for comparison. Impressive
soccer needs at least a ref behind goal. fifa’s stubborness/corruption is sickening.
But Germany didn’t have Klose then.
I love watching games with this type of speed.
When teams play to win, we get to see quick and composed soccer.
Most people in England favour goal-line technology. It’s up to FIFA.
Mexico and Argentina should have played yesterday being that they are in group A and the U.S. should be playing today at 2:30 P.M. . The U.S. was the better side anyway, just could not finish. England looks bad in this one. They will probably get pelted with rotten fruit at the airport like the Italians did.
The German, after this game, should shut their mouth for ever about the 1966 questionable goal.
We may be looking at the best game of the tourney so far. Only one that rivals it in my mind is the US-Slovenia game….
And yet Rooney has failed so far to live up to all the hype…
The US and Britain should bomb Fifa headquarters until Sepp Blatter comes to his senses.
I have always been opposed to video replay, but after the officiating disaster that has been this World Cup, we definitely need reply. This is disgraceful, and it is obvious officials cannot keep up with the fast action of play.
Hopefully this World Cup will make FIFA realize that a replay system for goal-line decisions would be beneficial for the game. In most games, it would have to be used once…maybe twice…maybe not at all. It is a shame that England are down 2-1 when they deserve to be level.
Jozy had that exact same play yesterday except he decided to dive. Klose decided to score.
Fifa is falling part, ref quality sucks, no technology to help the refs, they tell the French government not to ask the Frech Football federation question for the world cup embarassment, and the world cup ball sucks.
I’d have to say that the players who’ve impressed me, and should move to bigger clubs are Ozil,Bradley,Dempsey, Donovan, Howard, Kevin-Prince, and Honda. Arsenal can use at least two of them, in Howard and Bradley/Ozil if Fabregas goes.
All this talk about video technology, but I could see from the TV that it was a goal. Why can’t the ref or assistant ref see that?
If Arsenal is taking any American player, it will be Luis Gil on loan.
Fifa should be praying that England wins now.
Actually, I read about a week ago that Arsenal had inquired about securing Tim Howard and possibly dropping all interest in Fulham’s keeper.
FIFA changed their scheduling method since 2006 to make sure the team that are meeting in the knockout round have similar days of rest before the game. It did so after teams complained that sometimes one team has one day extra rest than the other.
I agree. We should’ve played today. And to England fans, welcome to our world…
Blatter is a joke.
I agree with the exception of FIFA telling the French government not to interfere (they can question, just can’t mandate). Governments do not need to get involved in soccer.
I don’t know about you, folks, but I am really looking forward to the game between Argentina and Mexico.
Seriously? Where did you read this?
7 years younger and a much better ‘keeper. Everton doesn’t want to let him go but they are selling club like it or not, as they don’t have the cash to buy but a player here or there. I would think the asking price will be in the range of 10M + pounds based on what Sunderland paid for Gordon (9M) a few years back and Howard is much better than him.
We’ve bombed countries for less, mate
Yes, I know, but I still think we should have played today.
It is going to be so exciting!
Now we get to really see who the best teams are. No more parking the bus, negative soccer, or playing to not lose.
The games are finally opening up like they should.
Somewhere in Yahoo! I’ll see if I can find it…
Of course it’s easy for us to see. It’s to cover for game changing mistakes, like Dempsey’s offsides and Lampard’s bouncer.
I don’t think, though, that it would have helped on Edu’s goal, because the ref blew the whistle early in the play…kind of like in American football, there will be somethings that can’t be replayed.
This could be a great game now. England riled.
As a half English, American I agree…my family and friends in England are hot right now…its one thing for us to have two dis-allowed goals however, that was a travisty and the English will go after Blatter with a vengence if they lose by a goal.
We’ll see how good the Argentinian backline really is. It hasn’t been tested yet.
Yeah me too….if its half as good as the match in 2006 it will be a doozy…:)
Fabio, pull out the stops! Bring on Joe Cole for flair and push Gerrard into the middle. Bench Defoe!
Stevie G looks like he’s 40.
Call me crazy, but I’d rather not see instant replay in international soccer. It will disrupt the flow of the game and it will become more like American pro sports with the constant stopping and starting and second-guessing. Instead, why not make refs more accountable? Make them declare the actual penalties, at least on plays in the box. Have more serious reviews after games with consequences for egregious blown calls. Maybe even extra linesmen. But once you go with replays, the game changes. Just IMHO.
If England tie this, Germany better bring on Butt for pks.
That’s drawback about instant replay. I mean stopping the flow of the game.
On the subject of instant replay, I think the main question will be:When do you use it? If you use it on every offside, every tackle in the box, this will be like American Football. For the game in the states, even fewer people would be willing to watch a 3 hour soccer game. I say use it only for goal line incidents. The players celebrate for a min or so anyway so if there is a dispute, look it up during that time so that the game runs smoothly.
I was hoping England would lose by one goal to put pressure on FIFA to do something.
So what would replay encompass? A situation where the ball was over the goal line? Would it apply to blown offside calls where a goal was scored and disallowed, too? Anything else? The USA goals against Slovenia and Algeria should be subject to replay just like England’s disallowed goal then. And wouldn’t the incorporation of replay change the game by essentially giving a bunch of potential time outs?
On another note, I think they should retroactively punish simulation with replay. You should be retroactively suspended if you, for example, get hit in the leg and grab your face. This would stop that kind of stuff instantly. It seems a shame that Kaka was suspended for Brazil’s last match (although Dunga might have rested him like Robinho) while Keita got to play.
It seems to me that the German keeper is suspect. He’s not that good.
The only problem is diving. There are some players/ leagues where this is commonplace, so stopping every time for that to book a player for it, take away a wrong booking may be difficult.
I’m kinda hoping for England to score so we can go to penalties, for the maximum tension and angst factor
I dont think it will disrupt the flow of the game. How often are there goal line decisions in a game? Not very often. Replays will disrupt the game as much as team celebrations after a goal.
This is why I have opposed replay, but if you have someone up in the booth, he should be able to immediately view the replay and call down to the referee. Should only take 30 seconds (or about one-fourth the time it takes a Ghana player to stand up after pretending to be injured). The problem is FIFA looks like a joke after what happened to Ireland, USA, Brazil/Ivory Coast and now England.
I’m not an England or Germany fan…Germany has missed an opportunity to make one of the greatest sportsmanship moves in WC history. They should have come out at the beginning of the second half and allowed England to score a goal. The whole world knows it should be 2-2 right now, including the players. What a second half this would be then. It would be a move never forgotten, and Germany would certainly be the darlings of the rest of this tournament. And by the way, they would probably go on to beat England because England would be so stunned, and Germany would be so determined.
Agreed. There are many arguments against technology, including those you mentioned. But Fifa needs to form a committee to thrash it out and figure out the best solution. Do some experiments in the lower leagues, if need be. Find out what works.
It needs to be used on plays where a goal is mistakenly allowed because a player WAS offsides, or like Edu’s where the offsides touch resulted in a goal, and was called off. If there is run of play after the call, it can’t be used.
It could be used on goal line calls like today as wel.
Argentina can be had but I think Argentina will win. Mexico is too offensive minded and leaves too many holes. But Mexico usually gets up for these games. Mexico has to do something in the first 20 min. It should be a fun.
Oh yeah, on dives for penalties and Last-man-back reds, too.
LOL… but true!
This is like a Premier League game… non-stop action. We needed some of this.
If this happened to the US or Ghana or Korea I would feel a lot more sympathy. FIFA is obviously dominated by the Europeans (including the English FA and the German FB) and the terminally corrupt such as Jack Warner in T&T, so you get what you sow. They had the power and didn’t use to, so tough.
Definitely agree about the simulation comment. Card and fine players after the game for diving.
As far as the replay I think all those scenarios are replay worthy. I don’t think it’ll slow the game too much because those events usually don’t happen more than once in a game.
FIFA should also add referees behind each goal.
+1
Joe Cole! Oh yes! Run at ‘em, Joe!
sucram89, if there is replay, I just don’t think it will be limited to goalline plays. Maybe it would start that way, but then people will clamor for replay on penalties in the box. And why not? It makes sense, as PK penalties can change the score as much as goalline calls. Having said all that, it shouldn’t take that much time…but all of a sudden the focus of the game is on some dude in a box at the top of the stadium. I just don’t like it.
Instant replay will effect the flow of the game about as much as players rolling around on the field to disrupt the flow of the game…when they aren’t hurt…so thats a poor excuse in my opinion…
Wow…will Germany make the bad call moot?
That’s why you need Stevie G on those free kicks
That was kicked right at the keeper’s hands, and he fell away to the side!
And another goal…
It would be better as well if they had an extra official behind the line like in the europa league.
All 3 German forwards have scored now. I bet we have at least 1 more in this game.
Heskey coming on. Don’t know whether to smile or cry!
Capello choking on the subs, he is not a very good coach.
Dam. Sign him up Wenger
England is getting smashed!
Oh boy! This is just a slaughter.
wow England just gettin ripped on the counterattack!
clinical counter-attacking soccer from the Germans
Baby, it’s over…
Painful to watch now…
That girl was hot.
HESKEY! The saviour
At least the US went out with dignity….
Englands three weaknesses exploited today…goal keeping, defense and speed….England is looks terrible…
While the defense hasn’t been great, James has been less than stellar in the England net. He probably should have come out on the first goal, stayed in his net for the second, and not guessed which way the shot was going on the third goal….
How do all the Bob Bradley haters like Capello’s decision to put in Heskey… to score goals.
Agree the USA went out fighting…not with a whimper…thsi si on teh players not Capello..
The blond, right!
I guess Australia shouldn’t feel so bad now, huh?
I know this may seem crazy but, England just aren’t that good.
That US draw against England isn’t looking too impressive now. Of course, you really can’t forget that disallowed goal because that is why England was forced to push forward and leave space in the back.
he’s scored more than Findley
I don’t think there is much question anymore that the United States is actually a ways down on the ladder in terms of fitness.
The English Altidore.
not just the WC I mean. Heskey did set up Gerrard against us, and has had more shots on goal than our forwards. Findley only had one all tournament.
Several of these English players will be too old for 2014. There’s gonna be some guys really emotional at the end – Gerrard, Terry, Lampard, Cole(A), James, Barry, are all done.
Altidore had 2 assits for the US, Rooney 0 goals and 0 assits, step of your soap box son.
off
What are you talking about? That is one area we are the very top.
Damn! The US needs some of that German engineering, precision and efficiency!! No more “General Motors” coaching, hire Klinsmann!!!
England’s biggest issue is they don’t have a group of good to great players coming up and they could be in the wilderness for quite sometime.
I was under the impression that yellow cards did not carry over from the group stage. Why has a number of players been booked and then said to miss the quarterfinals because of the accumulation?
Oezil is a damn good player.
Ozil – player of the tournament so far. Hard to believe Werder Bremen bought him for $5M, they are about to make a lot of money selling him soon.
Klinsmann is not the answer. Its easy to coach a team like Germany with the talent they have. Peopel forget the talent void sometimes.
We have shown nothing to support this conclusion, ever.
In fact, we were gassed at the end of the England game.
Germany is just rolling over them like it was nothing. Still outpacing them in the final 10 minutes.
Hate to say it: Rooney is having a terrible world cup!
yeah, with the maroonish nail polish. She was awesome.
Germany doesn’t have that great of talent. It is well-documented how poorly some of their players do at the club level. When they come together, they are a machine.
John Terry and Matthew Upson have been god-awful today. Plus Rooney and Gerrard have been no-shows for most if not the whole competition.
Yellow cards carry over through the quarterfinals.
Please. England will react with shock if Heskey scores.
And at least Bradley didn’t hold on to a sub until he needed 3 goals in 3 minutes.
They changed it once the competition began they don’t carry over after the Qtr Final.
they do it so you can’t miss the final by accumulation. They wipe them for the quarters so you can only get rebooked in the semis and not miss it by getting two yellows in two games
ENGLAND IS IN ROOINS
Oh really…you could have fooled me.
To the person who attributed Germany’s success to the talent, I say pay Loew and the head of the german soccer federation what they want and bring them in. I do not care what it takes. They play like a machine and are always successful at the world cup. They know how to get it done.
Are you even watching the games?!?!
Gerrard has scored 2 of their 3 goals. I am counting the on they scored but didn’t count.
They said: “Soccer is a sport where 22 players chasing a round ball and at the end Germany wins”
In South Africa: “Soccer is a sport where 22 players chasing a JABULANI ball with the VUVUZELA background and at the end Germany wins
You kidding? Sunil is a power freak. They wouldn’t surrender any power.
He’s right. Both Podolski and Klose underperform for their clubs but when put in a system that allows them to perform efficiently that plays to their strengths, they excel. THAT IS what the US needs.
They ran the risk of getting knocked out like this when they finish second in the group. Only have themselves to blame, not the goal not given.
Klose has 100 caps and has played in 3 world cups Altidore is 20.
This is ironic on so many levels.
Bismark sinks the Hood!! Bye bye England!
Gerrard bagged a couple goals, but hardly was able to dominate possession, which is his main job. England rarely controlled the midfield in this tournament.
Is it okay that seeing England lose like this makes me feel much better about USA’s efforts?
It may not have anything to do with US, but I just like seeing England lose
And just like that, there goes Group C.
Funny to thnk he is Turkish… the German team isn’t even German anymore.
Before the game,Klinsmann was talking about his goal with Loew that they tried to take the playing style for Barcalona and the prem too. Klinsmann got this team playing and Loew is continuing it. I’d rather have a coach like that that encourages a team to fight with spirit, rather than a coach who stands motionless as his team is hoofing the ball long after his favoritism for trash put the team down early.
Great stuff on ESPN with McManaman and Klinnsman dissecting the match post-game
If people on this site were England fans, they would be ripping Capello for choosing Upson and probably sticking with Terry (who had a bad WC). Instead, it’s obvious their players didn’t get it done.
Curse of Write the Future. Only Brazil and Portugal left.
The solution to diving isn’t to review the plays in-game. It’s to have a review following every game and retroactively apply suspensions for upcoming matches. Diving would go away very fast if they did that.
And I know they’ve occasionally done this, like with Eduardo this past year but it’s very rare. They should start hammering down on diving. It’s so preventable.
I have heard ESPN and Univision analysts make similar comments about England: No heart and not enough team effort.
scratch that…England decided that not to show up for the 2nd half….
Klose and Polsoki underperforma at Bayern Munich one of the best teams in the world. Hell Brazil’s best striker couldn’t hack it at Manchester City.
His save on Gerrard was big, but he totally misjudged that Lampard shot that hit off the crossbar. This is the bizarro Germany team.
But they have a lot more talent than us.
We learned today that it’s hard to stop goals when you have to get from one side of the net to the other on your Hoveround.
I am saying replace Sunil with him. Someone had to hire Sunil, they can fire him too. Not saying their need to be changes but the German contingent is who I want.
Go Argentina!!! Germany – Arg in the quarters would be so much fun.
This is what the US lacks. The instinct to punish, punish, punish. Germany buries their chances.
Oh I see. I do agree that Sunil needs to go.
I agree.
Terry was the game’s ultimate goat–a total nightmare and shambles on defense. Slow and out of position at every key moment. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
That said, the Germans put on a clinic. That’s how you play winning football.
And passing… composure… quickness… speed of play…
Also, players who can get the job done.
This is to all the people throwing shade towards Altidore. How many goals did Rooney score? He is the best striker in the world and scored 0 goals. I guess Rooney isnt good enough and shouldnt start for England. (sarcasm)
‘Germany doesn’t have that great of talent?’…
but still much more talent than good old USA!!!
Muller just got 2 today and he’s 20.
He did keep the team very tight. I think when you coach a team that is carrying that much pressure, you have to help them relax which he completely did not do.
But all that raises the question of how Bradley did do for us, when we’ve seen so many of the big coaches screw up too.
On to another exciting game in 2 hours… Argentina-Mexico.
Good for him. My point is Altidore didn’t score a goal but he was effective and threatening. He still set players up. Our guys just couldn’t finish. ie (Feihalber v Ghana)
What did Rooney do?
If Mexico gets a lead, we will see if Maradona can actually coach. Should be a great game regardless. Looking forward to it
Ozil 21, Podolski 25, Schweinsteiger 25, Boateng 21, Khedira 23, Lahm 26…
Klose and Friedrich are the only starters today that will be past their primes in ’14. Yikes. But it would be a towering achievement to beat Brazil on their home turf.
Podolski was benched and so was Klose. They stink at the club level. It is about unity. They become good players when they jell together but Germany can be had. Ghana had the better play against Germany and Germany was lucky because Ghana could not finish.Ghana just had to do it against us. I think Klinsmann would fine because he understands the American player. For the talent the U.S. has, they play well as a team. Klinsmann should get an interview.
The assistant was correctly positioned to call offside, which is his primary responsibility. The problem is that he cannot be in place to call that, and be in position to be looking down the line to see if the ball has crossed the line.
You know what? Here’s the lesson of this world cup: reputation doesn’t make a team. France, Italy, and now England weren’t as good as Ghana, Uruguay or the US.
May be, but the U.S. can beat them on any given day and should have beaten germany in 2002. Does Germany have better individual players than England? No, but they work better as a team.
+1
But once again stinking at a team like Bayern Munich doesn’t make a player rubbish. The best striker of the tournament so far Diego Forlan was benched at Manchester United.
4-1 4-1 4-1, 4-1 4-1 4-onnne
EPL is my favorite Football League in the world to watch and I think they are the best league overall but, English national team is definitely overrated they don’t deserve the high regard they have going into every World Cup.
oh come on he was born in germany .. what kind of racist s*it is that to say he isn’t german?
Oh yes, I’m racist because the German team is now full of players of Turkish, Brazilian and Polish descent.
Think of what Poland would look like with Podolski, Klose and Trachowski in the starting 11…
So tired of the racist remark nonsense on this forum. Some of you have a very limited worldview and limited knowledge of what racism actually means.
Mexico going on the offensive Juarez, Guardado,Gio, Boffo, Chicharito… It’s do or die time.
The current state of the EPL is the biggest part of England’s problem. It is chalk full of foreign stars who keep up and coming English players on the bench.
Also, people thought I was nuts to think Germany would go far this world cup. Most of their players play on the same team year in and year out and it has been like that for decades.
English football is a joke really and relies on foreign stars and investment to be what it is. Nothing wrong with that in a capitalism sense, but it hampers the game for the English.
he needs valencia to send crosses…
Argentina is going to knock the stuffing out of Mexico today. They are too small and too young.
I’m not surprised that England was beaten today. The English believe their press clippings. For the most part, the English are overrated. Today was a clash of contrasting styles; the English are like bulldogs, rather stocky and slow, whereas the Germans are like greyhounds, sleek and fast. This has to do with the training philosophies of the two nations. The German one seems to work much better. Also, the Germans have that octopus. That can predict games. We should get one and a new coach. The coach we have now doesn’t have a clue about tactics or man management. Oh BTW, us and the English both went out at the same spot, but at least we didn’t spend $9 million on a coach just a have million…..
that should be half million not have, sorry.
Yeah. But Germany doesn’t have players with as much composure on the ball as, say, Spain, Brazil or Portugal.
But, they do lack quick decision making (resulting in getting caught in possession a la Clark). That covers all the others (quickness, speed of play, and passing).
Aguirre has no choice but to test Argentinas defense. If Mexico can crack it, then we’re going to see a great game.
