The third team to reach the quarterfinals will be decided today as England and Germany do battle (10am, ESPN) in a match between two European heavyweights.
England enters the match having struggled in Group C, where it finished second and scored just two goals. Fabio Capello needs to lead the Three Lions to victory here, otherwise he'll feel the wrath of an English media which is pouncing on his every move.
Having won Group D, Germany heads into the game boasting a talented, young team. Led by the crafty Phillip Lahm, the Germans will aim to continue its success against its well known opponent.

FINAL- Germany looks as strong a team as any. Muller, Ozil, Podolski, Klose, all are enjoying strong tournaments. Their runs with and without the ball are superb.

88th minute- While it wasn't as bad as France or Italy, England was definitely one of the disappointments of this World Cup. Wayne Rooney failed to live up to the hype of being one of the best players on the planet and the team mustered just three goals in four games.

83rd minute- I know U.S. national team fans are disappointed with the loss to Ghana yesterday, but they can at least take pleasure in knowing their team exited the tournament with a hard-fought match, while England has been completely dominated over the course of this game.

79th minute- While the English media will probably point to Lampard's goal that never was, Capello will surely receive a bunch of backlash for this dismantling. Will he stay on as manager through Euro 2012 as his contract says? I don't think so, not with these performances and this result.

75th minute- For everyone picking a Spain-Brazil final, not so fast. While Germany's team has more youth to it than in previous World Cups, it should definitely be considered a favorite.

71st minute- Another example of England getting caught with too many players forward. That's the risk you take when you push most players forward.
Ozil made a strong run down the left side before laying the ball off to the center of the penalty area to a wide open Muller, who scored easily.

70th minute- GOAL GERMANY! 4-1! Muller scores again on another counter attack. WOW.

69th minute- England takes a poor free kick and pays for it as Germany springs a counter that ends with Muller blasting a shot to the near post.

66th minute- GOAL MULLER! 3-1 GERMANY! Muller hits a hard shot past James on an incredible counter attack.

63rd minute- Schweinsteiger hits a low shot from the right side of the 18, but it just goes wide. Better there from Germany.

38th minute- WOW! Lampard floats one over Neuer off the restart, and it bounces on the goal line. Referees deem it to not have crossed completely. We'll have to see it on replay.

21st minute- Fabio Capello must be livid with his defense there. They just let the ball bounce towards goal and watched as Klose got onto it. Upson was only nearby defender.

I have always been opposed to video replay, but after the officiating disaster that has been this World Cup, we definitely need reply. This is disgraceful, and it is obvious officials cannot keep up with the fast action of play.
Hopefully this World Cup will make FIFA realize that a replay system for goal-line decisions would be beneficial for the game. In most games, it would have to be used once…maybe twice…maybe not at all. It is a shame that England are down 2-1 when they deserve to be level.

I’d have to say that the players who’ve impressed me, and should move to bigger clubs are Ozil,Bradley,Dempsey, Donovan, Howard, Kevin-Prince, and Honda. Arsenal can use at least two of them, in Howard and Bradley/Ozil if Fabregas goes.

Actually, I read about a week ago that Arsenal had inquired about securing Tim Howard and possibly dropping all interest in Fulham’s keeper.
FIFA changed their scheduling method since 2006 to make sure the team that are meeting in the knockout round have similar days of rest before the game. It did so after teams complained that sometimes one team has one day extra rest than the other.

Call me crazy, but I’d rather not see instant replay in international soccer. It will disrupt the flow of the game and it will become more like American pro sports with the constant stopping and starting and second-guessing. Instead, why not make refs more accountable? Make them declare the actual penalties, at least on plays in the box. Have more serious reviews after games with consequences for egregious blown calls. Maybe even extra linesmen. But once you go with replays, the game changes. Just IMHO.
If England tie this, Germany better bring on Butt for pks.

On the subject of instant replay, I think the main question will be:When do you use it? If you use it on every offside, every tackle in the box, this will be like American Football. For the game in the states, even fewer people would be willing to watch a 3 hour soccer game. I say use it only for goal line incidents. The players celebrate for a min or so anyway so if there is a dispute, look it up during that time so that the game runs smoothly.
I was hoping England would lose by one goal to put pressure on FIFA to do something.
So what would replay encompass? A situation where the ball was over the goal line? Would it apply to blown offside calls where a goal was scored and disallowed, too? Anything else? The USA goals against Slovenia and Algeria should be subject to replay just like England’s disallowed goal then. And wouldn’t the incorporation of replay change the game by essentially giving a bunch of potential time outs?
On another note, I think they should retroactively punish simulation with replay. You should be retroactively suspended if you, for example, get hit in the leg and grab your face. This would stop that kind of stuff instantly. It seems a shame that Kaka was suspended for Brazil’s last match (although Dunga might have rested him like Robinho) while Keita got to play.
It seems to me that the German keeper is suspect. He’s not that good.
The only problem is diving. There are some players/ leagues where this is commonplace, so stopping every time for that to book a player for it, take away a wrong booking may be difficult.

I dont think it will disrupt the flow of the game. How often are there goal line decisions in a game? Not very often. Replays will disrupt the game as much as team celebrations after a goal.
This is why I have opposed replay, but if you have someone up in the booth, he should be able to immediately view the replay and call down to the referee. Should only take 30 seconds (or about one-fourth the time it takes a Ghana player to stand up after pretending to be injured). The problem is FIFA looks like a joke after what happened to Ireland, USA, Brazil/Ivory Coast and now England.
I’m not an England or Germany fan…Germany has missed an opportunity to make one of the greatest sportsmanship moves in WC history. They should have come out at the beginning of the second half and allowed England to score a goal. The whole world knows it should be 2-2 right now, including the players. What a second half this would be then. It would be a move never forgotten, and Germany would certainly be the darlings of the rest of this tournament. And by the way, they would probably go on to beat England because England would be so stunned, and Germany would be so determined.
Agreed. There are many arguments against technology, including those you mentioned. But Fifa needs to form a committee to thrash it out and figure out the best solution. Do some experiments in the lower leagues, if need be. Find out what works.
It needs to be used on plays where a goal is mistakenly allowed because a player WAS offsides, or like Edu’s where the offsides touch resulted in a goal, and was called off. If there is run of play after the call, it can’t be used.

Argentina can be had but I think Argentina will win. Mexico is too offensive minded and leaves too many holes. But Mexico usually gets up for these games. Mexico has to do something in the first 20 min. It should be a fun.

If this happened to the US or Ghana or Korea I would feel a lot more sympathy. FIFA is obviously dominated by the Europeans (including the English FA and the German FB) and the terminally corrupt such as Jack Warner in T&T, so you get what you sow. They had the power and didn’t use to, so tough.

As far as the replay I think all those scenarios are replay worthy. I don’t think it’ll slow the game too much because those events usually don’t happen more than once in a game.
FIFA should also add referees behind each goal.

sucram89, if there is replay, I just don’t think it will be limited to goalline plays. Maybe it would start that way, but then people will clamor for replay on penalties in the box. And why not? It makes sense, as PK penalties can change the score as much as goalline calls. Having said all that, it shouldn’t take that much time…but all of a sudden the focus of the game is on some dude in a box at the top of the stadium. I just don’t like it.
Instant replay will effect the flow of the game about as much as players rolling around on the field to disrupt the flow of the game…when they aren’t hurt…so thats a poor excuse in my opinion…

Before the game,Klinsmann was talking about his goal with Loew that they tried to take the playing style for Barcalona and the prem too. Klinsmann got this team playing and Loew is continuing it. I’d rather have a coach like that that encourages a team to fight with spirit, rather than a coach who stands motionless as his team is hoofing the ball long after his favoritism for trash put the team down early.

If people on this site were England fans, they would be ripping Capello for choosing Upson and probably sticking with Terry (who had a bad WC). Instead, it’s obvious their players didn’t get it done.

The solution to diving isn’t to review the plays in-game. It’s to have a review following every game and retroactively apply suspensions for upcoming matches. Diving would go away very fast if they did that.
And I know they’ve occasionally done this, like with Eduardo this past year but it’s very rare. They should start hammering down on diving. It’s so preventable.

Klose and Polsoki underperforma at Bayern Munich one of the best teams in the world. Hell Brazil’s best striker couldn’t hack it at Manchester City.

Terry was the game’s ultimate goat–a total nightmare and shambles on defense. Slow and out of position at every key moment. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

He did keep the team very tight. I think when you coach a team that is carrying that much pressure, you have to help them relax which he completely did not do.

EPL is my favorite Football League in the world to watch and I think they are the best league overall but, English national team is definitely overrated they don’t deserve the high regard they have going into every World Cup.

The current state of the EPL is the biggest part of England’s problem. It is chalk full of foreign stars who keep up and coming English players on the bench.
Also, people thought I was nuts to think Germany would go far this world cup. Most of their players play on the same team year in and year out and it has been like that for decades.
English football is a joke really and relies on foreign stars and investment to be what it is. Nothing wrong with that in a capitalism sense, but it hampers the game for the English.

I’m not surprised that England was beaten today. The English believe their press clippings. For the most part, the English are overrated. Today was a clash of contrasting styles; the English are like bulldogs, rather stocky and slow, whereas the Germans are like greyhounds, sleek and fast. This has to do with the training philosophies of the two nations. The German one seems to work much better. Also, the Germans have that octopus. That can predict games. We should get one and a new coach. The coach we have now doesn’t have a clue about tactics or man management. Oh BTW, us and the English both went out at the same spot, but at least we didn’t spend $9 million on a coach just a have million…..

Yeah. But Germany doesn’t have players with as much composure on the ball as, say, Spain, Brazil or Portugal.
But, they do lack quick decision making (resulting in getting caught in possession a la Clark). That covers all the others (quickness, speed of play, and passing).
