The Europa League field will be down to 16 teams Thursday, as a slate of 15 second-leg matches will determine who moves on to the next round of the knockout stage.

Benfica took care of business by eliminating Hertha Berlin 4-0 (5-1 aggregate) on Tuesday.

Landon Donovan, Tim Howard and the rest of Everton will look to hold on to their 2-1 edge at Sporting Lisbon at 3:05 p.m. EST (DirecTV channel 462), hoping that a late penalty that yielded an away goal last week won't make the difference in their tie.

The other matches that kick off at 3:05 are:

  • Fenerbahce vs. Lille (DirecTV 467, Lille leads 2-1)
  • Hapoel Tel Aviv vs. Rubin Kazan (DirecTV 464, Rubin Kazan leads 3-0)
  • Juventus vs. Ajax (GOLTV, Juventus leads 2-1)
  • SV Salzburg vs. Standard Liege (DirecTV 468, Standard Liege leads 3-2)
  • Valencia vs. Club Brugge (DirecTV 465, Club Brugge leads 1-0)
  • VfL Wolfsburg vs. Villarreal (DirecTV 463, teams tied 2-2)
  • Werder Bremen vs. Twente Enschede (DirecTV 466, Twente leads 1-0)

Earlier Thursday, the following teams advanced to the Round of 16:

  • Anderlecht (defeated Athletic Bilbao 4-0, 5-1 aggregate)
  • Panathinaikos (defeated AS Roma 3-2, 6-4 aggregate)
  • Marseille (defeated FC Copenhagen 3-1, 6-2 aggregate)
  • Liverpool (defeated Unirea Uziceni 3-1, 4-1 aggregate)
  • Atletico Madrid (defeated Galatasaray 2-1, 3-2 aggregate)
  • Fulham (drew 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk, 3-2 aggregate)
  • Hamburg SV (lost to PSV Eindhoven 3-2, 3-3 aggregate, advanced on away goals)

Bad start for Everton, their defense is like a sieve early on

  11. Johnny says:

Ha, I can top that. The goalkeeper of Independiente in Argentina is named Fabian Assmann. No Joke.

  22. BBB says:

  23. B1879 says:

translate red direct to spanish and try your luck there.

  24. CaliNick23 says:

    try justin.tv for the game.

  25. ThaDeuce says:

just went out too. is it true that when you type the full address an epl bot takes it down?

  26. Adrian says:

    feeds getting pulled

  27. Ted in MN says:

and Landon switched and all of a sudden the play goes up the left side :P

  28. patriot71 says:

    Guys,

I never have much luck with good Internet feeds but this one seems o.k. for the Everton match:

    link to vexcast.com

  29. Ted in MN says:

neither osman or landon has really been in the game

  30. lneaton says:

Landon hasnt touched the ball . . . maybe once

  31. petaluman says:

feed seems to be back for now…

  32. Ted in MN says:

well defensively Landon has been there, they haven’t made a run up the side he has been on. Oh Landon earned the corner there

  33. Ted in MN says:

not surprising that Saha can’t do much with that, i think that is the first time he has even had a chance to do something

  34. BBB says:

    you da man, senor

  35. lneaton says:

Off topic, because this game is really NOT exciting . . . does anyone know when Bradley will post the roster for the Netherlands game?

  36. Ted in MN says:

well Sporting is clearly winning even though they are getting the calls.

  37. Adrian says:

i’m sitting in a webinar, wish i could watch

  38. Ted in MN says:

    ouch town population you bro

  39. understood says:

there not just bots at this point…there are companies that hire actual human beings to come on websites just like this to ask for links just so they can shut them down…so people need to stop being so liberal with sharing the links even if they switch a and i for @ and !

  40. Adrian says:

is everton just playing poorly or is sporting holding them back

  41. Ted in MN says:

and this is why some people complain soccer is boring.

  42. dinomitedan says:

everton just made it to final 16 in agg.

  43. Ted in MN says:

both and the sporting is failing in the final third

  44. Ted in MN says:

oh close. looked like Landon was going off with it. already he is more in the game

  45. Ted in MN says:

that guy really likes to go down light

  46. scott says:

can we please pick up the commentary for those of us that are stuck at work? thanks

  47. BetaMale says:

    howard saves everton’s ass again

  48. Ted in MN says:

    TIM HOWARD! Save

  49. Adrian says:

i’m with scott, i can’t stream from in here

  50. Ted in MN says:

k but it will not have correct grammer (grammar?)

  51. Ted in MN says:

Rodwell on for Bily. Hasn’t really done much

  52. Ted in MN says:

And landon has space to saha who handles it off to pienaar who pushes it wide. Great work by landon terrible aim by Pienaar had all the time in the world cause the CBs were on the backfoot from chasing Saha

  53. scott says:

im tracking on bbc but i like getting the info here more

  54. BetaMale says:

Everton gets scored on. They’re done

  55. Ted in MN says:

and Sporting comes back the other way and score. Thought he was offside. Ope no. Nobody picked him up. Tragedy for Everton. That being said, Sporting has earned it

  56. Ted in MN says:

nobody even stuck out a foot on the pass to (whoever scored).

  57. Ted in MN says:

Now Everton has picked it up. Pienaar and Baines work down the left but there cross is to Sporting

  58. JSmiley says:

Time for Landy to take matters into his own hands. Or feet.

  59. Jorge says:

Miguel Veloso scored, assisted by Yanick Djalo.

  60. Ted in MN says:

finally they are pushing and osman earns a corner off the throw by kicking it on the defender’s knees. Corner is a bit too long and the header to send it back to the middle is too high and gets picked off by the keeper. Waste

  61. Betinho says:

is it me or is Everton very left handed?

  62. Ted in MN says:

cheap free kick given away by Everton and the header off of it goes straight to Howard comfortable.

  63. Ted in MN says:

and Evertopn lost their fire a bit

  64. Ted in MN says:

    Everton*

  65. lneaton says:

    landon subbed off . . .

  66. Ted in MN says:

beautiful cross by Landon and saha gets pushed down. Landon off right after that. Quiet night for him. Baines gives it up easy and Sporting goes on a run

  67. Jorge says:

    Landon off…

  68. Ted in MN says:

heads back the other way and a couple of crosses go in Saha ends up with the ball 2 yards from goal but it ends up saved. not Everton’s night so far. Nice to see some urgency though, there best run of the game

  69. Bill says:

Donovan got caught ball watching on the goal. The guy he should have marked on the return pass scored

  70. BetaMale says:

Sporting scores again. The dream is over

  71. BetaMale says:

the better team definitely moves on

  72. rob says:

It is hard for me to become a fan of Everton. It does not seem like they want to win. Donvan should be taking the corner kicks and the past few games they are not giving him the chance. The only few opportunities they have had to score have come from Donvan. I think he is going to be happy to be going back to the Galaxy. He should not have been taken out.

  73. Jorge says:

    Everton down now… 2-0

  74. Ted in MN says:

as the game is now, i would be shocked if Everton scored. They have looked slow and out of their league

  75. kyle says:

GOOOOLLLLLLOOOO SPORTING!!! They’re finally playing well… and Bill, Miguel Veloso scored (you can stop calling him “that guy”) because he’s a pretty talented player that most football followers know of.

  76. Patrick says:

Not over just yet if Everton can put one in.

  77. madmax says:

Landon had poor outing, little energy, as did most of the team.

  78. primoone says:

wow…real lazy by LD not chasing his man. Rookie move to stand still with your hand up. He wasn’t even watching the defensive line as the 2 center-backs were clearly not playing the trap.

  79. Ted in MN says:

well good game for Howard. had some bad luck on the goals.

  80. chaco says:

I hope they don’t. I’d hate to see that display again. The one team that came to play should win the game

  81. Ted in MN says:

nice run by Arteta, he (like the rest of the midfield) has been quiet

  82. Tim says:

Agree about being happy to return to the Galaxy.

Who wants to play in the best league in the world when you can play in a mostly empty stadium against old men and second rate footballers.

  83. Bill says:

    my apologies, haha

  84. Ted in MN says:

Time for Tim Howard to come up

  85. Ted in MN says:

    That was just bad.

  86. K1p says:

    that’s all folks!

  87. Ted in MN says:

sure if they follow Portugal… but I think most here are following Landon Donovan and Tim Howard

  88. Andy in Atlanta says:

I watched the entire match and Landon was not bad…just not good either… he played the line right…the CBs should have held their line…

Oh and Landons sub… Jags GOT OWNED HARDCORE at the end.

  89. bf says:

I think Everton’s biggest problem was letting Sporting get into the game. They should have taken it to them earlier, and maybe would have got something to stem their onslaught.

LD played a beautiful ball to Saha that should have resulted in a goal (miss by Pienaar)

Was it just me… or did Sporting get some great no calls and Everton got shafted?

  90. JT says:

What happened with LD? Sounds like it was bad all around if he was subbed out at 63 min.

  91. Jose S. says:

I hope that Dempsey is healthy when Fulham plays Juventus in the next round

  92. chaco says:

The whole team was bad. The 3-0 result is pretty fair. Sporting was that much better.

  93. WonsanUnited says:

    FULHAM ADVANCED! YESSSSSSSS!!! COYW!!!

  94. ThaDeuce says:

thanks buddy, this saved me…until my wife made me leave for a bar that didn’t have the game…
I really wanted to see Donovan’s second half.

  95. ThaDeuce says:

then it was calinick’s fault! argh

  96. ThaDeuce says:

whoever does that for their job is a nuttsack douche and we should string up and cyber kill them from this site.

  97. CA says:

I didn’t watch the game but all the reports I’ve read are saying the same thing, the whole team was horrible. Sky Sports fan ranking gave Donovan a 5.4 which was second best behind Timmy’s 6.4.

I wonder why Moyes pulled LD out so early?
