U.S. national team defender Steve Cherundolo has been ruled out of action for up to a month with a shoulder injury he picked up in practice, revealed club Hannover 96 on its website on Sunday.
Cherundolo's injury likely rules him out of action for the U.S. team's upcoming friendly against the Netherlands on March 3, and comes at a time when Hannover 96 are battling to get out of the relegation zone.
Cherundolo's injury adds to the laundry list of potential U.S. World Cup players sidelined with injuries. DaMarcus Beasley (thigh), Charlie Davies (knee, elbow), Clint Dempsey (knee), Maurice Edu (ankle), Jermaine Jones (leg) and Oguchi Onyewu (knee) are all currently on the shelves.
What do you think of Cherundolo's injury? Worried about how this will affect his form? Just happy to hear the injury is not too severe? Which other right backs would you like to see called in for the Netherlands friendly?

boom whatcya say
We should not play against Holland. (Saying this half kiddingly.) But honestly, who do we have standing right now? Bradely, Howard, Donovan, Spector…. Our depth is going to be really tested.
Doesn’t sound too bad. Who knows.
Bring in Kevin Alston!
while it’s never good to see someone get hurt, cherundolo is much more replaceable compared to our other injuries
Our back line is hurting. In addition to Gooch and now ‘Dolo being injured, Bocanegra has gotten limited playing time.
We have others who can play the defensive positions, but I would much rather have a solid line of veterans who have played together healthy and sharp for SA.
Bring in Kevin Alston..I second that
Dolo is going to S.A. 100% if healthy…all these injuries right now may be a blessing in disguise. They’ll be resting while our opposition’s players will be risking injury week in and week out. Hopefully our key guys will be fresh come June and England’s ,Alg, Slov will be run down.
I heard the announcers in the sc freiburg game say that their right back Daniel williams is an american. he is currently starting in the bundesliga.
Can we now officially call him the “oft-injured” Steve Cherundolo?
Dan Williams is a viable choice
Steve needs to come back to MLS Ayer south Africa, especially if hannover gets relegated
Lock Williams in to the US team – he has dual citizenship (Germany)
They will all be back in time so I’m not concerned. I’m really loving the impressive form from all the other Americans this weekend. Seems like everyone is jumping on this Dan Williams bandwagon. It’s the first ive heard of him but i guess we can try to woo him away from Germany.
we want daniel williams!!! another option could be alston or sean franklin
A month out is no big deal.
Also, whatever injuries Edu and Beasley have will be healed long before SA. In fact, I’m sure they will both be injured and healed several more times before then.
Gooch is almost back with Milan, Davies is making a miraculous recovery, Dempsey’s injury will be healed soon — everything is fine, dammit! Just fine!
For those who don’t know Williamm, he is a defender/defensive MF/ playing for Freiburg….only 20 years old….dual US/German citizenship
* Williams
I third that. As well as a call to Bundesliga starter Daniel Williams (right back)!!!!
Who is Daniel Williams?

never heard of williams but if he starts in the bundesliga he must be a decent defender. he might even be better than bornstein, who bradley thinks is the world’s best outside back.
the worst part of this injury to cherundolo is that bradley will just start bornstein and spector at outside back vs. the dutch instead of trying spector and cherundolo. not like he was going to try that anyways but it would have been nice… if bornstein is at left back vs. england we are in trouble.
How many more injuries can the US have. At least it is not overly serious. Hope everyone gets well and stays well.
Sucks, because our best backline would clearly consist of: Dolo at RB, Gooch and Bocanegra at CBs, and Spector at LB.
FOURTHED!
Man, these Nats remind me of the 09 Mets.
The American-German connection could be a factory for the US NAtional team, thanks to Ramstein Airbase and the like.
Jermaine Jones
Daniel Williams
David Yedell
Fabian johnson
even past players: thomas Dooley
and The best striker and one of the best playmakers at the U-17 german level are Shawn parker and Fabien Hurzeler……two American-german kids.
Never thought of that. Very interesting.
Frank Simek (seeing some time at wednesday) for cover but Spector should be the starter against The Orange. Play Jay and Goodson or Boca in middle then maybe Boca or Bornstein or Castillo at LB. Depending on the CB pairing. It ain’t great but better than nothing.
Now if the Williams kid wants to get an opportunity to play in a WC at a young age maybe we see what he has. Just coming to camp would not ruin his Germany future right? Maybe Bob falls in love and the kid does to and we see Williams on the right with Jay or Boca or Spector in the middle and Bornstein or Boca or Castillo at LB.
My prediction is Spector, Jay, Boca, Bornstein line up against the The Orange. Williams becomes a Jermaine Jones type scenario.
Why hasn’t Williams been called into a US camp before? Is he still hoping to play for Germany?
Guys the answer here is easy on who should start for us against the Netherlands…..It’s Marvell Wynne haha jk
He hasn’t committed to either…we need to get in first (for a change)
With the amount of young talent the Americans have, they will be a force in international soccer, especially if the dual nationalities choose the Americans
Agreed…but the US needs to improve scouting and start looking to the future…I don’t blame Bradley for his choices..I don’t much care for him as coach..that said he has done a pretty good job. There is a pool of young talent here and all over the world that is not being tapped…the reason that we are all here talking about a “replacement” and have no real idea is because there is a lack of depth in the squad…pre world cup is not the time to make the change – but it better happen soon – then we can all discuss winning a world cup with some real/honest expectations at success.
He’ll be back by early March, 3 and 1/2 months ahead of the WC. Not worried at all.
You are German-born American citizen. If you had a choice: Which country would you play and why?
Daniel Williams: So far, there is a question. But I feel very connected to Germany. I was born and raised.
I take that as an opening…USSF, get in there and see what he says. It certainly won’t hurt.
There is something to be said in terms of all these injuries actually being in good fortune for our world cup chances. A. The recovery process is therapudic in more ways than just recovering from an injury. The ability to reflect upon past successes and failures allows the brain to refocus energy. B. With all the injuries hitting up to now there has been plenty of time for them to really get back into a groove. As a former athlete I know that my best times were after coming back from that ankle injury or being fully recovered from the cartilege in my knee being shredded. Here’s to the good fortune of all the American athletes coming back in good form and playing a solid world cup.
As long as he’s back in time for the World Cup…
Frankie Hedjuk back in the mix.
I rather hope we get Daniel Williams. Bayer leverkusen whooped Freiburg today- but from my understanding, Williams had his side of the field covered all day and went the full 90 as a reward.
Only 20, so it probally means something.
Everyone calm down, I know this might sound ridiculous. I just went on Facebook and I sent a message to Kerry Bob Bradley daughter about Daniel Williams hopefully she will deliver my message to Bob I hope so, fingers crossed. I want him on the USA national team. I don’t think he will cut it for Germany, if he does he will be like Jones. Germany has too much depth.
Wrong Frankie. I think Simek gets the call. He may have even without the injury to Dolo.
Interesting that another german american has surfaced…next question, noting that the USMNT scouting team does have logistical challenges discovering players, how does the USMNT find out about such players? Is there someone dedicated to following these blog sites?…the Yanks Abroad site mentioned Michael Hoyos, playing at Estudiantes in Argetina….anyone got any ideas???
Ugh. Don’t say that.
very good initiative, maybe we need to help USMNT scount too, the US alone is geographically impossible to cover…
*scout
We got Picult who plays for Cagliari Calcio reserves an Serie A team. We have Anton Peterlin and Cody Arnoux who plays for Everton reserves. I just don’t want to lose any more good players. We missed out on Rossi and Subotic, it was Rongen’s fault Subotic changed nationalities.
This is very funny stuff.
Besides Spector what other US right back even comes close to Dolo?
And both have a history of injury problems.
Send another one about Michael Hoyos. He is playing for the best team in South America currenltly, Estudiantes(Argentina). He is an 18-year old American who was a starter during pre-season( scored a golazo, i think) and might have played in the first Clausura game……not sure.
This is the best news I heard all week…Hejduk get your boots on and start practicing your flying two footed tackles cause you might get a phone call for March!
actually, we never had a chance with rossi, he grew up wanting to play for italy but yes, subotic we had a chance until rongen….but i’m with you, don’t want to lose opportunities to get players…..
Can’t get rid of him, can we?! Next it’ll be Lalas….
Better to get injured now than two weeks before the tournament….
The point is not if these guys will be at the WC it’s how in form will they all be not having played due to injuries and manager decisions. I think everyone but Davies will be in SA and play but will lkiely suck due to rust. BB will play Gooch, Boca, Dolo (who wasn’t playing before injury), and Dempsey it they are able to stand upright but how effective will they be?
I almost feel lucky these injuries are happening now. Rather than feeling unlucky they’re occurring at all.
Or Frankie Simek, in a pinch.
Maybe another Jermaine Jones in the making? Intriguing…!
Also, Demerit can play RB, he has before and he could in a pinch. But I don’t think there will be a pinch, Spector would due just fine if Dolo was out, but I think that he (Dolo) will be fine.
Yeah, but who are England’s wingers? I’m more worried about Bocanegra having to defend Rooney.
(SBI-At this point, there isn’t a team or defenders who wouldn’t be worried about having to defend Rooney. And to be fair, Bocanegra and Onyewu defended Rooney pretty well the last time they met.)
That is a good connection. Gotta love American-Military bases abroad…now if we could only get one in Brazil or Argentina…but there are a few Air Force bases in Netherlands, Spain and Portugal.
Another who would be a decent pick, just for a look is Sheanan (sp?) Williams who I believed played RB for the U-20 in the WC.
Ok. I didn’t see that game. Fair enough.
Where have you heard that Dolo wasn’t playing?
I fifth the bring in Kevin Alston campaign. He’s our right back of the future.
Dolo’s been playing. He didn’t play Saturday because he got his 5th yellow card the weekend before and had to sit out a game. Boca played this weekend the first times in weeks.
Anyways Hannover is saying it’s a shoulder break and he should be back in 6 weeks. Sucks about the Dutch game, would have been ideal for Spector to play LB, but as someone else said, at least some of our guys won’t be worn ragged when the WC comes around.
*Boca played last weekend for the first time in a while.
i like how someone here remembered edgar castillo!, the kids got talent, bradley just over looks him because he plays in mexico, like he does orozco whose clearly capable of playing for the senior USMNT and paco torres …bradley just seems a little unfair in terms of giving others a look sometimes.
