about time Ives with the saturday commentary. Did you just wake up? =)
(SBI-Post was set to be up at 10am, but didn’t happen.)
Jozy dressed but did not enter in Hully City’s win.
I’m a left coaster, just waking up, too. Any word on Jozy’s form in their win over Wigan?
jozy dressed but did not play
did not play
Jan Vennegoor scored a goal, played until the 90th min, and they subbed a defender for him.
No Jozy.
boo!
Benny’s playing at the moment.
Michael Bradley is listed in the starting lineup for BMB. Glad to see he worked his way off the bench, and hopeful that he manages a long, successful spell on the field today.
The implications for the World Cup qualifier: this nixes the ‘playing time’ argument for not “seeing” him in the starting lineup against Honduras.
Gosh… this Danish game sucks. Empty stadium, crappy weather, big fair haired guys falling on you left, right, and center. Who the heck would want to play there?
Sunderland up 1-nil, Man unt off to a slow start.
Anyone have a feed for Aarhus or Gladbach?
link to atdhe.net
best I could find…
never mind, it died.
link to iraqgoals.net
better one….
hull was so lucky…..phil brown is an idiot
it was comical to see how lucky hull city got with goals
he played hesselink up top by himself who is not known for his speed
you cant do that….when they got him the ball there was no fast pplayer to help him out and support
brown said he was going to do altidore/hesselink partnership and hes not
i wish they didnt win b/c now brown probably wont realize they need jozy to help jan the man…..they scored on a lucky coorner and cheep break away, Wigan deserved the game more
The u20 team doens’t deserve to go to the next round.
Nani is terrible
somebody get afc a lollypop.
so what scenario must happen for the USA to go on?
Sir Alex Ferguson is passing gas better than Manchester United are passing the ball.
Does anyone have a Sochaux link?
GOAL Manchester United! Berbatov bicycles a John O’Shea cross and curls it to the far post past the keeper. 1-1
Bocanegra Red Card in the 13th Minute
any luck with a Sochaux link?
I’m starting to take a liking to sunderland, what a good team they are.
Marquez starting for Barca!
Jones utterly destroyed Foster, great play from Sunderland…
I find it funny if Benitez had made some of the team selections that Ferguson made, he would get lambasted as a tinker-man…
Austin – That was a great header by Jan to put Hull 1-0 up. Hull were the better team today
I agree Ted. Before the season started, I said they would be playing in Europe next season and it seems like they are capable of achieving that. The only problem I see is that Bent goes on streaks of games where he scores tons like now and streaks of games where he never scores. Cattermore and Cana are both quality. How Bruce got both of them for the money they spent is beyond me. He is a really good manager as well and I see him taking over Man Utd once Freguson is gone.
Sunderland 2 United 1
Oh to be SAF.
Berbatov stumbles, falls, then gathers in ball with his arm to stop counter. Sunderland Ferdinan kicks ball away. Berbatov gets nothing and Ferdinan a yellow.
Oh to be SAF
There’s a 50/50 chance the official will get involved for United.
Here we go with the Old Trafford home cooking…
Official just red carded a Sunderland chap, with 3 minutes to go. I expect many minute added on if United still in arrears.
Richardson is an idiot. Come on Sunderland please hang on
How was Valencia onside in the leadup to that goal?
Bah, Sunderland almost pulled it off. =\
Idiocy from Richardson and Anton Ferdinand cost Sunderland the win, but still huge points dropped for Man United who could have really taken advantage of the Liverpool-Chelsea game…
jackie…..did you watch the game?
it was a superb header from Jan, but that doesnt mean they were better
they never built up an attack and actually threatened Wigans back line….you obviously have no idea about tactics
they started with venegoor up top BY
HIMSELF and hes slow…..they had nobody to support him and altidore should have been the man to do that
Wigan came back at the end and should have tied it…..Wigan passed and kept the ball much more than Hull and looked the more dangerous side…..when Hull got that lucky corner, Wigan were the ones looking like they would score….hull had barely had the ball
Im not a Wigan fan, im just making the point that Wigan should have punished them and it would have been phil browns fault because he did not start the likes of Ghilas and Altidore……if Hull plays any CONSISTENT team in the top half next week and they have the same line up with hesselink up front they will get killed just like they did against liverpool
typical Man Utd. Every single one of the players on that team have a winning mentality only Chelsea can match. Thank god the ref didn’t add another minute or they probably would have grabed a winner
How sad that an official once again inserted himself into an Old Traford tie for United.
Berbatov should have been carded for grabbing the ball, instead Sunderland goes down a man for the last 8 minutes.
Only Chelsea can match? Do you remember who finished 2nd last year and beat you both times in the league?
Why can there never be a straightforward match at Old Trafford? It’s two points dropped, but for crying out loud…
For all the optimism surrounding Davies/Jozy in the first few weeks, it’s hasn’t really turned out great for them, has it? When can an American get regular time on a squad NOT in danger of relegation in Europe? It’s the chicken and the egg debate: do teams lose when American join, or do Americans join losers?
Liverpool does not have a winning mentality like Man Utd and Chelsea have. When things are not going well or they are not playing well, Liverpool does not score in the 90th minute consistantly.
They did score late last season, Japan. Lots of last-gasp winners. Portsmouth and Man City and Wigan come to mind. And they also got 14 points (out of 18) from United/Chelsea/Arsenal.
Americans join losers,
Jozy went to Hull, they suck
Davies went to Sochaux, but they’re alright
Onyewu went to Milan, they suck too
Bradley M’Gladbach, they’re alright
Dempsey Fulham, Succesful
Howard Everton, Succesful
so its not all americans
You know, Jan’s a decent target man. He wins 50-50 balls, has a pretty good first touch, is able to hold onto the ball and combine with those around. Jozy could learn a thing or two, and I think his weakness in those areas is keeping him off the field.
Yes, when they are playing well and are losing/tying, Gerrard and Kuyjt pops up in the 90th minute but when they are not playing well and are losing/tying, they don’t. The reason Liverpool didn’t win the league last year was because they tied the taems they should have beat because they don’t play well against those kinds of teams and they don’t score late in the game when they are not playing well.
Having a winners mentality is more than beating the other top 4 sides.
“they don’t score late in the game when they are not playing well.” Not sure what exactly that means.
They didn’t win last year because their two best players — by a country mile (and two of the top 5 players in the world IMO) — went through sustained periods of injury. It killed them.
What did Bocanegra do to get a red?
Don’t forget Boca plays for a Borderline champions league team in France.
I love it when Charlie/Jozy/Adu post on their Twitter stuff like “Bout to do it big time tomorrow!!!!” and then their team goes scoreless or they don’t even play. Also, Freddy needs to stop telling us whenever he lifts weights…
When Liverpool has a bad game(similar to how Man Utd had a bad game today), Liverpool does not score late in the game. When Liverpool is having a good game but are losing/tying for some reason, than yes, usually Gerrard or Kuyjt pops up to score the winner.
Liverpool should be beating midtable teams without Gerrard/Torres.
I’m not a Liverpool fan but I am really excited about seeing Aquilini play. I’m assumng you are a Liverpool fan(sorry if I’m wrong). If you are, do you see him helping the team right away?
Boca lost and got red carded, Bradley lost, Davies lost, Jozy didn’t play. South Africa here we come.
“Also, Freddy needs to stop telling us whenever he lifts weights…”
Or you can stop reading their twitters.. dumbest thing to hit the internet in years.. the twitters and the people that follow that boring garbage need to get a life.
Actually, Davies and Sochaux won. But yeah Omar, you’re so spot on. If our players aren’t playing for ManU or Barca then we’re guaranteed to lose all our games in South Africa.
On a side note, it looks like if Costa Rica lose 1-0 or by 2 goals, US U-20s go through. Since we all know Rongen will never get fired, might as well hope for a chance for some of our guys to prove themselves in another game.
Barcelona off form, 1-0 over Almeria.
First time I’ve seen both Messi and Iniesta make a series of bad touches, yes they did. I don’t believe it either.
Actually, Davies and Sochaux won. But yeah Omar, you’re so spot on. If our players aren’t playing for ManU or Barca then we’re guaranteed to lose all our games in South Africa.

Oops, you’re right about Sochaux; they did win in the end. Listen, I don’t expect a squad of Real Madrid or Inter players, but it’d be nice to have a guy contribute on a consistent basis for a top, top club. Everton and Fulham are struggling, and sorry, Rennes is nice and all, but hardly would cause Arsenal or Liverpool much worry. Hopefully Gooch can work his way into Milan’s everyday squad.
Soccer has been a major part of the youth sport landscape in the US since the ’70s, and yet Tim Howard at Man United remains the only key cog of one of the world’s top clubs. Unless I’m missing someone. It just baffles me.
I propose a new rule: No one can say “mentality” unless they are from England.
Same goes for “pitch” and “nil”. I’ll accept “gaffer” however. That word’s fun to say
Suazo subbed in for Muntari? (those Inter fans should give Muntari a break he was visibly shaken) . Will Suazo dress for Honduras?
I would like to point out that if the current U-20 world cup results remain the same the USA somehow advances to the round of 16.
Same goes for “pitch” and “nil”.
—-
Agree whole-heartedly. And any American who calls soccer “proper football” should have their citizenship revoked.
never mind costa rica just scored
It is pretty much over for the U-20s as they need The Czech republic to score 3 goals against the costa ricans in 1 half.
USA suddenly has hope as the czech only need to score 2 goals now.
Agree with “pitch, nil, and football” but what’s the American way of saying mentality?
Any other rules I should be following Tony since this is now your site.
Could this be another miracle? Czech need to score only once more for the USA to advance. This has just gotten very interesting.
“Liverpool does not have a winning mentality like Man Utd and Chelsea have. When things are not going well or they are not playing well, Liverpool does not score in the 90th minute consistantly.”
What in the world are you talking about Japan? Did you watch any of the 2008-09 Premier League season? Liverpool scored a number of late winners against Middlesbrough, Man City, Portsmouth, Fulham, and even your beloved Chelsea.
Granted they weren’t all in the 90th minute (which is a pretty steep standard to set), but they were all late on past the 80th.
Waaaaamp waaaah.
A well earned three and out for the U-20s.
Costa rica advances the the USA goes home.
David Suazo dressed and started for Honduras in their last qualifier. I’m pretty sure Suazo is in the plans to get playing against the US.
how did costa rica advance? we had the same goal differential?
@OmarVizquel
I must disagree. Everton had their typical slow start, but are rebounding nicely and are still waiting on three of their best players to fully recover. Fulham just had their best finish ever in a the premier league, and they’re slow start is due to the extra games they have been playing, but they are more than likely to rebound.
Also, although, many kids play soccer, it doesn’t mean they take it seriously like those playing in other countries do. Serious athletes play other sports.
The only game I can remember when they played badly and still scored late is Gerrard vs Middlesbrough. All the other games you mentioned, Liverpool were playing well and deserved to be winning. Also, I didn’t mean just 90th minute and beyond. Anything past 80th is fine. That’s my bad.
My main point is that when Liverpool has a bad game(similar to how Man Utd had a bad game today), Liverpool does not score late in the game. When Liverpool is having a good game but are losing/tying for some reason, than yes, usually Gerrard or Kuyjt pops up to score the winner.
And I don’t support Chelsea. I support Arsenal. I hate to say it but neither Arsenal nor Liverpool have a chance in the premeier league.
@fieldsy- Costa Rica on Goals for.
After the USA’s performance in game 1 and 3, they had absolutely no right to advance.
I really hope we get some better coaching that can truly evaluate this whole US program from U14 to the National team. We need desperate help.

Fulham just had their best finish ever in a the premier league, and they’re slow start is due to the extra games they have been playing, but they are more than likely to rebound.

My point was that neither Everton nor Fulham are world-class clubs. At best they’re mid- to upper-table strugglers. And that’s just a fact, sorry.
Japan,
I don’t really know what playing badly has to do with it, but I think the games listed below pretty much exhibited that Liverpool had a winning mentality last season.
-@ Sunderland (8/16/08): Torres scores in the 83rd for the win
-Middlesbrough (8/23/08): Pogatetz OG in the 85th, Gerrard game winner in stoppage time
-@Man City (10/5/08): Kuyt scores in the 90th for the win
-Chelsea (2/1/09): Torres scores in the 89th and in stoppage time to give Liverpool the win
-@Pompey (2/7/09): Kuyt equalizes in the 85th, Torres wins it in stoppage time
-@Real Madrid (2/25/09): Benayoun heads home a winner in the 82nd
-@Fulham (4/4/09): Benayoun scores a winner in the 90th
any team can win when they are playing well, only good teams win when they are playing bad (Liverpool is a good team but you get what I’m trying to say)
rongen is a joke. time for the ussf to get serious with all aspects of their coaching tree. someone needs to tell bradley its cool to make changes in playing time, lineups, and philosophies before the next world cup cycle starts.
Japan: if I may use a Britishism…I was taking the piss.
But ‘Merican for “mentatily” would be “toughness” “attitude” “Brass cajones”. Any of them would do.
rongen will and must get fired…..
The good news with all of our players bombing in Europe is that we certainly won’t be favored to get out of our group in SA. Of course we probably won’t but at least nobodys dreams will be shattered like las time. Maybe more of our guys should be staying in mls
Tony, I guess I can see “pitch” and “nil”, but I’ve been using the word “mentality” since I was little. Perhaps Quakeland’s vocab isn’t representative of the entire US?
Honestly, I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal for people to hear British terminology used in conjunction w/ the EPL or soccer in general. It’s not totally unlike people saying you can’t truly root for an EPL team unless you’ve lived in England and have a connection w/ a team.
Torres has looked absolutely BRILLIANT for Pachuca in the first half. He drew a red card after winning the ball, redistributing the ball, getting it back, switching the field and getting hit with a horrible late sliding tackle. He’s fine though, I believe he’s back on the field.
Forgot to mention, Pachuca up 1-0 on a goal from Gimenez.
Watching Revolution v Rapids and the quality of play is so poor. MLS needs Major changes.
incredible game in Columbus today, a big time nail-biter
Gringo comes off after 70 minutes. In that time span, he gave the ball away twice, once off a shot right at the keeper, and another off an errant pass that led to a goal kick. He could very well get the start against Honduras but I feel that Bradley will go with Clark.
The Seattle – Columbus game was entertaining. And the New England – Colorado game is being played at a hell of a pace. Very fast and physical.
Is it a coincidence that 3 kick it down the pitch teams England, USA, and Australia are out in first round?
Wow that might be the worst pk call I’ve ever seen against the Revolution. WTF
Wow. Red card to Julian Baudet. Make up call for sure. A push to the face.
You know, Jan’s a decent target man. He wins 50-50 balls, has a pretty good first touch, is able to hold onto the ball and combine with those around. Jozy could learn a thing or two, and I think his weakness in those areas is keeping him off the field.

Subotic disagrees with you.
What is Conor Casey considered an elite mls player. He gets alot of calls kinda pathetic cuz he is so awful
I doubt too many people would want a feed for RBNY vs. SJ tonight, bu there is one at link to justin.tv. It’s working right now, at least.
That San Jose penalty call was a friggin joke
I root for Quakes, but I think Red Bulls got screwed on the PK.
Cbus.. ha ha
Sounders!!!!
One nil at the Crew’s pitch. Now that’s proper football!
too bad. i would have watched this game if there were relegation and one of these teams were at risk
Relegation battles are so much fun to watch. Games between bad teams in the MLS are not.
