Good morning everybody. Here is the second of four parts of the most recent Q&A session.
If you asked question last week, be ready to have them answered either today or tomorrow (that’s the plan right now. I might leave the final part for Saturday so some folks can make their way to SBI on the weekend).
Now, without further ado, here are some more of your questions answered.
BEN- I was wondering if you had any thoughts on who to coach the USMNT after 2010? Kinnear? Nicol? Hiddink?
Also what are the odds Donovan makes the jump this season overseas?
I know he declined comment directly after the game, but I was wondering if there were any recent interviews with him talking about the incident.
SEAN- Who do you think are the most underated players in MLS right now that might deserve to go overseas?
IVES- Assuming you just mean American players. I would go with Jeff Larentowicz, Nick LaBrocca,
—————————
ERIC GRIESHEIMER- At one time Michael Bradley looked like he was headed to one of the top teams in one of the top leagues. Is he stuck in Holland or do you think he moves soon? I’d love to seem him make a splash at a bigger club.
IVES- Bradley could still move and could still go to a top league. Things will sort themselves out in the next two days.
—————————
TED HILL- 1. What do you think of Juventus chances in the Champions League this year. I know it will probably have a lot to do with the group stage draw, but what do you think of the squad and the chances to make the knockout rounds?
2. What club outside of England, Italy, and Spain do you think has the best chance to raise the Champions League trophy?
MARC- Does RBNY have remaining allocation money following the Jozy transfer and the subsequent signing of Rojas, Pietravallo, Cichero and Jiminez? If not – and assuming that RBNY is not good enough to win the Cup this year – it seems like the money would have been better spent if some was saved until next year.
IVES- Yes, there is money left. The money spent so far looks very well spent but the club isn’t done trying to make moves.
—————————
AC- If the USA Men’s National Team experiences success in their qualifying group early on, or even in the hexagonal portion, do you think we’d probably see Adu and Altidore called into camp or would Bradley probably let them develop with their new clubs?
MANICMESSIAH- Do you think MLS is unfairly criticized for the murky nature of its rules? Based on what we saw from the NFL, where there was a lot of talk about intervention by the commisioner to move Brett Favre for the good of the league seems pretty much identical to the situation with McBride and Chicago.
And as far as European soccer, how would you rank: 1)domestic cups; 2) league matches; and 3)european cups, as far as your enjoyment of watching them in general.
Thanks Ives, you do a great job on this site.

I missed the questions period, but does anyone know if you can file a discovery claim and have the right to sign someone, but you can’t sign someone without a claim that is joining the league unless you are next in the allocation order, why don’t people just put a discovery claim on the person you want to sign and not have to trade for the allocation? The whole thing is convoluted and confuses me.
Jeff, you can’t put discovery claims on just anybody. Established current or former U.S. national team players are exactly the players that the allocation process is in place for, so they can’t be discovered.
Ives, Did you just use the words “Marketing” and “New England Revolution” in the same sentence? HAHAHAHA Thanks, I needed that as a Revs fan! Seriously though, thanks for all of your hard work on the site.
Juventus is cheating scum
Ives,
Why does New England have such a crappy field?
Rauldinho – NO YOU!
NE Revolution needs Robbie Keane, come on that would be the ultimate pipe dream, not Kaka.
RE: Discovery claims not valid on National Team Players. Not so sure about that Ives, if you’re talking about non-American national team players. From what I understand, RSL has a discovery claim on Ruud Van Nistelrooy, on the off chance he ever decides he wants to play in the MLS.
Hincha, RSL more than likely has a Designated Player claim on Van Nistelrooy. Teams are allowed to put in a claim for one Designated Player prospect so if that player comes to MLS they have first crack at that player.
Thanks, Ives. I did not know that rule existed. Backs up your assertion that the MLS should have more transparency. As always, keep up the great work. It’s great to watch and follow the evolution of your site. Are you considering coming to Salt Lake when the NYRB’s help open RSL’s new stadium?
Thanks so much Ives for taking the time to catch me up to speed.
Hi Ives,
Question about the Revolution, depth, and transactions before the roster freeze date. Do you see any chance that the Revs could unload a less productive player off of their senior roster and pick up a talented, moderately young winger or striker to improve depth before the roster freeze date? Who would be the most likely players to go and who could they bring in, considering all of the restrictions (must be U.S. based player or unnattached, playoff bound teams unlikely to give up said player, can’t pay $200+K to USL team, etc.)? Luckily they have lots of cap room.
Thanks!
i agree with your comments on dempsey. i used to be the biggest fan. but he has looked so sloppy lately. and lazy. seems like the ripe candidate to become a clubhouse cancer.
Ives,
Do you think Kyle Beckerman is still due a look from Bob Bradley? Any chance of him getting consideration?
Also, is RSL going to make the play-offs? Will they hold their great home form in the new stadium, away from the rock hard turf?
RSLinSo.ID,
I’ll try to answer those questions for you. Although I hope differently, RSL is going to have a tough road to hoe in their quest for their first playoff appearance. They have 4 home games and 5 away games. Their away record is abysmal. They are going to have to either start winning at home (instead of tieing) or start getting some points on the road. The next two games (at home against Colorado and away at LAG) are both important for turning around their fortunes. Their ability to control the midfield and create scoring opportunities I believe will be the key to their success.
Their success (or lack thereof)in their present stadium might be a function as much of the narrowness of the field as it’s hardness. It will be interesting to see if RSL can start to use width more effectively in their new digs. They have acquired two new players, Robbie Russel and Will Johnson whose strength are attacking wide, but it remains to be seen if these players are truly high quality acquisitions.
In my estimation, its going to come down to the last game of the season for RSL to qualify for the playoffs.
We will not let Beckerman play for you!
Jamaica,
Then we won’t let Andy Williams play for you!
Ives,
Now that Berbatov has signed with United, what was the difference between them swoooping in buying him from Spurs and RM trying to buy Ronaldo? This smacks a bit of hypocrisy on Sir Alex’s part, does it not?
